...............This is an update on my thread about giving up drinking. If you didnt read it, this was my first weekend in years that I wouldnt have a drink.

Well Ill admit it I was quite worried how id feel, but it was great. Friday was the clincher, My only "symtom" (spelling ?) was a dry mouth, I was really thirsty, so I drank lots of water and felt fine. Saturday, I didnt even think about it.

So im on my way to a month of alcohol free. I urge anyone who want to cut down or stop drinking but are worried, just do it ! give it a go.

I put it off for a long time cos I really felt I had a problem with drink, and was worried I prove to myself that I did. I do think the way I drink, all or nothing, is a problem but at least now I know I can go without

    Thanks everyone for the encouragement

Congratulations Vitty! My mom died of alcohol poisoning when I was 19. She'd been trying to kill herself with alcohol since I was 5. Finally she succeeded! Congratulations mom! She was warned by doctors for years to give it up. Her liver showed signs of wear and tear, not to mention the occasional yellow eyes and broken blood veins on her arms and face. But she was a determined person. Nothing was going to stop her! Not divorce, loss of her children and home and health and youthful beauty. At 41 she passed blissfully away in her sleep....she looked like she was 70.

You'd think I would never drink a drop after living through such a nightmare with an alcoholic mother.
The stories I could tell of my drunken mother at my girl scout troop meeting, or of mother getting loud during my junior high school orchestra concert and being escorted out. Or of the only time I had a girlfriend spend the night to have my mom pass out on the floor before dinner. Needless to say I never saw that friend again.

I did try drinking. Found it doesnt "agree" with me either just like mom.
    Gave it up for years.
    Then tried it again.
I'm now in another dry season.

I'm saving alot of money not drinking, not to mention calories, and oh might I also add...brain cells!

Oh Vitty, I might add....I never tell myself I can never drink again. That feels too depressing for me.
I just choose day by day. And it gets easier day by day. This last weekend I really wanted a drink so bad. I told my boyfriend. We just had a restful easy weekend and I got through it without succumbing. I think the hurricane disaster in New Orleans and all the coverage sort of got me really down and some other personal stuff is eating at me. I wanted a chemical relief. Thats how it goes...week by week...day by day.

You know what makes me feel better?

    Laughing with a good friend.

    A good physical workout.

    A massage.

    Naps.

And a wonderful cup of tea around 5pm.

Way to go Vitty! "That which we fear most, withers to nothingness when confronted".

Gee Banished.... I don't know what to say. It sounds like you have a level head on your shoulders. Though you've had a "troubled" life growing up, and I'm sorry your mom wasn't always there for you, you are doing a lot of good by sharing your experiences. I wish the best of life for you.
