I don't know if I have a favorite movie of all time. I am a huge fan of Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander", a theatrical fairy tale dream play that just came out on DVD with a couple of hours of footage not used in the theatrical version. It's a beautifully crafted tale that I watch every year around this time because much of it centers around family, and christmas, and get togethers. There's a stronger sense of mood in that film than anything else you'll probably see this year and I strongly recommend that you see it if you haven't done so. Tarkovsky's "Andrei Rublev" is a close second on my list, no other film puts into context the difficult path of the artist. Not a biographical film, but nevertheless, a movie that seems a lot more grander than the russian artist who's name is used in the title. I would put it on the same level as a lot of the important novels of the previous century. "2001: A Space Odyssey" is another movie that I admire. I don't think its a science fiction film per se, but I do think it does an excellent job showing how there is a path of enlightnment that is guided by a benevolent unseen force. A very moody, epic film that continues to amaze me. I also like "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", "Once Upon a Time in the West", "Mulholland Drive", "MIller's Crossing", "The Godfather", "Sanso the Baliff" and "Blue Velvet".
