Details on Files Kept in the Cong.

I used to put the name of those serving on the JC, the name of the chairman, the name of the disfellowshipped person, the date of the committee and the date of the announcement to the congregation -- I would also add -- not appealed or appealed as the case may be.

If it was sexual I used to put porneia/fornication or adultery. I never put any detail - -for example I would NOT put "he put his hand inside her blouse and felt her breast and manipulated her nipples" --- I will not put any other examples of what I did NOT write -- do not want to get a serious thread deleted.

I personally used to keep old records also -- did not destroy them -- until very close to resigning as an elder when I had a great big burning session and dispatched old notes to the fire!

Also I used to seal the envelope and only allow the chairman to open the record -- and even then I would not do it unless he gave me an adequate explanation of why he wanted the record opened

    Stilla,

Its good to know that at least some elders had a concience. Sadly I think most are leaving like u did.

    Hilary:

probably because they feel that Jehovah has so much to do that he is likely to forget who he has to kill at Armageddon and who gets to live. He needs the Secretary to keep note for him....

ROFLOL!!! That idea is one of the things that woke me up in this organization. Jehovah does not care about record keeping, whether it be time slips, study reports, how many in attendance at meetings, assemblies, conventions, etc., and all the other various and sundry sheets of report paper I am discovering from reading this board, that the society prints up.

After I treathened to sue the body of elders, I got in writing that the only records they have of me are:

    • My name
    • Date of DF
    • Scriptures relating to the DF

None of the notes taken were saved, or so they claimed...

In Britain, allegedly because of the Data Protection Act, things changed about 3 or 4 years ago (I was Sec, then). I'm dredging up the details, because it was two years ago, (or to be precise on the 6th Jan.) that I left, so the following should be correct:

    • After DA / DF decision two copies of a form (S77?) is sent off to the local Branch
    • After the return of one of those copies it is placed in an envelope.
    • The envelope is marked with the name of the individual, the names of those on the committee, and the date of the action, then sealed.
    • The Announcement is also made, around this time, making it official to all.

All notes are destroyed, so there is literally only the form retained (a copy of which is someplace on the Net - I think hosted by Kent). The details therefore held are minimal, and the meat of the action is held in the Elder's dubious (and often biased) memories.
If some decades have passed, it's unlikely that any real facts from the previous case can be brought to bear in the case of a reinstatement.

In my case I filled most of the form in, for them, because I didn't want to strain them with the effort of working out how it should all be filled in

I could see where as time goes on and more suits happen, they would be smartest to leave out details. Of course it seems to me, that most times no one except the elders gets to see them any way so it hurts you, your character if you have made mistakes, but you have no control over the situation.

As I brought up before about being asked in a Judicial Committee meeting if I had ever been in trouble for sexual relations before, I didn't feel like it was a question to get 'caught up' on things they didn't know.. or didn't read, I had a feeling it was because they wanted to see how honest I would be. If I said, no never, then BUSTED for lying so don't believe her 'sworn' honesty now.. and when you say yes.. busted any way because the next thing they say is, do you see a pattern here?

Ha, no kidding ... So the elders were telling the truth ... how utterly disappointing (and yet re-assuring)

    Thanx LT

That all depends on how petty your cong is, given the norm, just about every questionable ( or any distortable comment ) you have ever made.

Remember that LittleToe is talking about the Data Protection Act in the UK. There is no such legal protection in the US.
