Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I can relate to it all. I lost over thirty years, and I, too, considered circuit work. It was discussed with me by several COs. However, by that point, I was already sick of the brown-nosing that goes on with the CO arrangement and wasn't interested. I also realized that a lot of what COs do is just busy work and is not spiritual. One CO actually told me that.

I, too, remember, those first temptations to look behind the curtain and the nervousness in doing so. It's a profound experience to begin to realize that something you once believed in so strongly and gave SO MUCH of your life (time, energy, resources, and even health) for is wrong. Those first thoughts ("Could we be wrong? Could it be possible?") dance in your head and won't settle down.

My wife and I are still processing the shock of finding out we were wrong. We were in so deep; being JWs was 101% of our lives. We're now in the phase of trying to figure things out - whether there is a creator, whether the Bible is what it claims to be (evidence not looking good so far), whether we are just products of evolution, where the stuff of the universe came from if there is no creator, etc. I still cling to some hope that there is something else. I keep an open mind.

Looking forward to hearing more from you. Any more details about you and your husband would be appreciated. For example, did you sense something was wrong before you watched the 20/20 show? If so, what?

7Starz - My wife has not officially joined this forum, but she reads a little on it. Mostly, though, I keep her filled in on the stuff she's really interested in (goings-on in JWdom). We went down the same path at the same time in leaving JWdom. Our feelings evolved at the same rate. We have been 100% in agreement. We both recognized the hypocrisy, deception, teachings that don't make sense, etc.

We are so very glad you are here! My wife Nevada and I are almost a mirror image of what was described in your introduction. We also were in the organization almost 50 years. We also were born-in JWs who regular pioneered for almost 20 years, traveled where the need was great, helped to start new congregations, gave public talks, conducted the Book Study, and served in some of the most dangerous places on earth to spread the good news.

    .

We also left because we were shocked at how the elders and Watchtower Society "ran" from our questions! By around 1996 we had just about enough of the lies we were being asked to swallow.

    .

We are also a husband and wife team, but we do have friends who visit here and post from time to time. (Petra and her Dad Vulcan).

For the past 3 years we have worked with a former Bethelite and his wife to become free of the Watchtower, and they are making great progress.

Please feel free to contact us at any time for documents, research materials, scans, talks, BOEs, or whatever you may need to assist you.

You have a family right here on JWD and we are here for you! Write or (pm) us anytime!

I too laughed when you described looking over your shoulder at the bookstore ! Because I did the same thing . The fear you described is so real at the time ,and so sad when I think back on it . I just read your account to my husband ,and told him how I hid my internet searches from him ,afraid he would turn me into the Elders .

Welcome to you and your husband . I think it is interesting and encouraging to see others like us (born in and in our 50's) awakening and finding freedom from the Watchtowers hold.

I wish you the best on the journey and discovery from here on out. Someone here told me to take it slow ,and remember we may never have all the answers ,and that is OKAY ! Best advice .

So did you and your husband just stop attending or did you DA yourselves ? How has the exit gone for you ?  Looking forward to reading more of your story .

What to wear when shopping for CoC:

If caught by any JWs, just tell them you're shopping for porn. 99.9% chance they'll respond, "Me too."

    Samaritan At the Well: Welcome.

Thank you so much for posting your especially interesting story. Reading it made both Joe and I happy to know that my "sincere" eyes and factual statements helped cause you and 7Starz to crack the door to freedom from the mind-manipulation of the Watchtower organization. In the majority of cases, and as you found out, it's a slow and sometimes painful process to open that door wider and wider and it can take years. It did so in my case. But when that door is fully open, what an exhilarating feeling to breathe the fresh air of real truth, not the fantasy that entraps millions of Witnesses.

For what it's worth, the program I appeared on, which you saw that Thanksgiving eve, was NBC Nightly News, broadcast in 2007. That five minute segment was about Watchtower's secret out-of-court settlement with 16 victims in nine lawsuits for $12.5 million. Happy to say, that announcement led to many more victims filing lawsuits against the Watchtower, especially the successful Conti lawsuit.

Joe and I were not really surprised at the elder's reaction when you told him about the program. When have the Witnesses wanted the public to know about the misdeeds and problems within "Jehovah's organization"? That elder could only hope nobody was watching NBC Nightly News the eve before Thanksgiving so the secrets would remain hidden.

Sad isn't it, how, as a body, JWs want negative facts about them to be hidden from the public even though that knowledge could help prevent children inside and outside of the organization from becoming victims of JW pedophiles. Apparently, kids don't matter, only the Watchtower matters.

Life outside a cult can be challenging in the beginning of the journey, but it gets easier and easier as time flies by. The only sorrow we have is that we didn’t leave the religion earlier.

We think you will feel the same way.

S at the W and 7Starz, WELCOME! Your story has some things in common with ours. Balaamsass and I are both only children, 3rdgen JWs who woke up in our late 50's. We both came from families who had members in high positions. He is a former pioneer, Bethelite, need greater, and Elder. I had been a pioneer at one time too. Ours is the 2ond marriage for both of us and we were fully indoctrinated when we married. The issue of how child molestation is/was handled by Watchtower particularly in a case he had first hand knowledge about was his big wake up call. Sorry to say it took even more info for my eyes to open but am I glad they did! Can't wait to hear more from you. both.

    Wonderful story

I have to chuckle when you wrote of how you wrapped Ray's books and kept them under lock. My husband did the same thing when he first ordered them. He actually created dust jackets complete with fake titles printed on the book covers. And I remember the first time that I ventured on this forum and how many times I kept turning around as if someone was behind me even though I was in my own home.

I hope that you will share your watchtower experience further. After 50 years you must have much to tell us.

    Regards,

Barbara you are correct it was NBC Nightly News. I was so excited and nervous when I typed my first post I was thinking it was 20/20 thank you for reminding me.

Barbara do you think any news media will pick up a new story with you with so many new cases arising?

    Troubled Mind.........we just faded.
