    thanks for the tip what was i thinking

    6÷2(1+2)=x

    there has been a huge debate on the internet on what is the correct answer. Even algebreic calculators have been giving diffrent answers.

    Perform the calculation inside the parentheses first.

    6÷2(3)=x or

    6÷(2x3)=x

    The multiplication will be done first, since it's presented as a single entry and not a calculation.

    6÷6=x

    1=x

    x=9.

    I was always taught at school (looong time ago) to keep the calculation in the brackets separate from the calculation outside the brackets. Something like that.

    6÷2(1+2)

    = 6÷2(3)

    = 3x3

    = 9

    Nope.

    6÷2(1+2)=x

    the only part between parentheses is (1+2). 2x(1+2) is not between parentheses.

    So:

    6÷2(1+2)=x

    6÷2x3=x

    3x3=9
