What's a really good movie you'd recommend that most people probably haven't seen?

Wow, thanks for all the recommendations, gaiz!

I've seen some of these already, and many that I have were excellent (notes on just a few below), so I'm psyched about the ones I haven't seen.

Cidade de Deus - (Netflix recommendation that I was very happy with, highly recommended)

the Wrestler- haven't watched it yet, but I loved all of Aronofsky's previous movies, with Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain being two of my absolute all-time favorites.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - (writer Charlie Kaufman is awesome--if you liked this, watch Synecdoche New York, which he wrote and was his directorial debut, and his best movie to date IMO)

Waking Life - (I really like Richard Linklater; loved Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and A Scanner Darkly which was done in a similar visual style)

A Clockwork Orange ..."Stanley Kubrick is truly a genius." - Agreed.

So......how about any really, really unusual movies that you've thoroughly enjoyed? I would count The Holy Mountain among these--anyone seen this?

I agree with all those who mentioned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I am not a great one for romantic films but that was good.

    Judge Dread said: "They Live!".

Best line in the movie: "I came to kick ass and chew bubble gum...and I'm all out of bubble gum."

well not any others that jump out at me, but again, if you're looking for unusual but strangely intriguing (aka you absolutely enjoyed it but you don't know why lol) then I would say try that Repo: The Genetic Opera movie. UNLESS you don't like movies that have singing in them. Because pretty much the ENTIRE dialogue is sung. But strangely enough, it's not annoying at all lol

but yeah. definitely unusual yet enjoyable! :D

(excellent thread idea, btw! I made notes to watch a lot of these movies!)

There are so many. One I liked a lot that I haven't seen in a long time is "The
Belle of Amherst" starring Julie Harris, which was on PBS. The library has a book of the
stage play and books of Emily Dickinson's poems I liked, too.

Precious was is very harrowing, went to see it with a friend who is a lawyer and my 16y old daughter, he said afterward it was not unusual to encounter such things when he was training.

An Education is enchanting, very English, and redolent of the late 50's and 60's

Eat, Drink, Man, Women (Chinese 1994) Watch the sub-titled version

A good look into the Taiwanese culture. A widowed father dealing with his three grown daughters and their problems. But a side feature is how important meals are to the family. Warning: Will make you want to go out for Chinese food
