hi celt. i fast once every six months, and have for the past 4 years. i usually fast (only drinking water) for 4-5 days. im always pretty insane, so i havent noticed any effects it's had on my mind :P. i eat like i normally do up until the day i start. but the day after i am done i gradually work my way up to full meals (or i'll get sick -puking).
why do you want to do this anyway? it can be dangerous, you should read about it and such.

I have to be nagged at often to eat, I much prefer often to go without. Many times 3 days or so might pass before i notice that i'm hungry that much, I just try to get by on a minimum, is this common and something peculiar to jw related individuals?

hmm, that could be but i know of 3 people who can go up to 5 days at a time without eating simply because they don't feel hungry. and not one of them is a jw, or former jw. maybe you should get it checked by a doc or somethen. ???

Guess i have the opposit problem. I often eat to feel better. In some churches and some of the catholic saints fasted for days. It helped them to get 'closer to god'.

some people also say screwing gets you closer to god...

I am well aware SS of the law of opposites and neurological circuits that make up such, I dont need a babbling idiot when my own mind is already well aware of working out your one liners in nano seconds.
Hey Celtic,
Great idea - fast for 3 days and you might see the baby jesus. I know some Indonesian Pentecostals who swear by it. (they see angels but you never know your luck in the big within)
goodluck, unclebruce.
PS: I'm interested in learning meditation myself.
I only eat once a day, and that is 50% by choice and 50% by my schedule. It is very rare that I go more than 2 days without eating. Fasting just for some spiritual exercise? Doesn't seem natural or beneficial to me.
Now, go 4-5 days without a beer?!?
Celtic;
If you don't eat, short-term your body clicks into this real cool 'hyper' mode, and this makes it feel good not to eat. But that's the short term effect.
You don't realise you are getting pulled down. I know from experience that I suffer badly from emotional problems if I don't eat properly for a sustained period. I get depressed and dissatisfied.
Corpo mens corpo sanis (not sure of the spelling of that) is true as it ever was; 'A sound mind in a sound body'.
If you have ANY problems with how you feel about yourself, depression, whatever, look at the machine that holds your mind first.
If you're not eating properly, then solve that FIRST. I'd be surprised if you didn't feel a lot better very quickly.
Once you get into the habit of eating irregulary, it's hard to break, but to break the cycle of feeling bad, eat regulary.
If you start using food as a conrol mechanism, you risk the slippery slope that ends up with living in residential accomodation with a lot of skinny teenagers having food forced into you.
Control your life by aiming to feel BETTER.
