i just heard this - anyone else? i was curious as to the reason people were given for this. and i can't help but think of those that will be trying to get a job in this economy, with few skills and probably no college education. any thoughts?

    welcome to the board atpeace..

is this a new wave of layoffs or part of the ongoing layoffs?

You dont think Bethel cares about their well being do you? Here is the new employment formula at Bethel: bring them in at 19-21..use them up for 10-12 years...then let them go before they start getting sick and causing medical bills...tell them they are needed in "the field".... bring in more 19-21 year olds...rinse and repeat...

    Hello atpeace!

Nice to have you posting here.

I haven't heard that one specifically yet, but it would not surprise me. The implosion continues.

Snakes: haha, so true. That really is the formula right now. I have family trapped in bethel and am trying to get them out while there is still time to do something worthwhile with their lives. The only saving grace is that occassionally they can learn something in there that is practical. However, the psychological damage is difficult to repair, and is certainly not worth suffering through to get an education in the printing business.

The only ones left will be those that disobeyed the society and got an education.

Snakes has it correct. He did miss out the bit that if you are an exceptional ass kisserorganizational man theocratic person, you may be allowed to stay longer. Also if you are a qualified lawyer or CPA you may also get to stay longer

I think the latest downsizing started in late 06, or early 07. 1,500 seems like the number asked to leave. This happened around the time they discontinued the "bethel elder" label.

A relative of mine had gone to Bethel when he was 19 (as I did later). Got married when he was about 26, then they both stayed for a few more years. Then, about one and a half or two years ago - when these layoffs just started - they were booted out. However, not before they were asked in a round-a-bout way to leave and go "join the field," in other words, go pioneer somewhere, with the GB's blessing. They "applied" for a "need-greater" assignment, and were sent to a Midwest state. This is how it works. There are all these niceties and weightless protocols for saving face, but in the end, people like this are let go one way or another. 10 years at Bethel for what? The only thing a person can do is build on their prestige - that's all they have. Thus, the only thing to do is go and pioneer somewhere, be an elder and elderette, not have kids while the wife's biological clock ticks away into obsolescense. If they would have had some skill or profession, they would have not only lasted longer at Bethel - riding the gravy train - but would have had better prospects when they were forced out.
