Thanks for the reply Kate ..Ah yes intellectual intimidation many fall for it through fear , even a belief in god can be enticed in this way as history has shown
Always be wary of it.
As always best wishes
i use the word clinging, as i feel that is what i am doing.
as far as my knowledge of science, namely chemistry is concerned, i am satisfied there is evidence of a creator.
i am happy to believe this.

Hi Kate may I pose a question? Without this forum or the responses on which you have come to a cconclusion; what would your own conclusion be?
Many people base their conclusions/beliefs if you like on what others opinions are eg those who accept the bible as gods word because of the opinions therein
Personally I still find a perplexity in your reasoning as it seems to require what others offer as an answer .

it's obvious the bible is very clear on a actual hell of fire.
"cursed into the eternal fire with the devil and his angels", rev.20:15.
"lake of fire", rev.21:8 "fire and brimstone".
The human brain has the capacity to create wonderful things for our benefit , likewise it also has the ability to conjure terror.
Which camp we wish to belong to is down to each individual.
Influence in our childhood can have a great bearing on our decisions
The reason we would believe in horrific torture may have been inculcated from infancy by similarly influenced adults who have held onto these beliefs mainly through fear of their perceived judgemental god.
Imo if a person comes to a belief that there is a literal hellfire in adulthood they need to seriously question their sanity.
true believers, whether christian, muslim or whatever, want to convert you, they want you to believe what they do, and they're willing to go to extremes to make it happen.
atheists don't really care what you believe, and don't go out of their way to convert someone.. http://ow.ly/vn1jz an example of what believers in power do to suppress any difference in thought.
http://ow.ly/vraeo an example of why believers want to suppress different ideas (because they can't win in a fair fight, that's why).
Athiest?yep I get that, but TRUE believer?.exactly what is a true believer?.
Is it someone who believes in truth? Any takers who can explain the true belief without saying ' just because I want to believe'because there is absolutely NO truth ie something which is true without evidentially confirming it, otherwise its fanciful guesswork.
In my humble opinion of course.
Remember;..the truth shall set you free..now where have I heard that before..Mnnnnnnnnn

FHN;...its not really the fact that someone doesn't accept your thoughtful conclusions, but more that as part of a religious discussion forum all our conclusions are open to lets say friendly scrutiny.
If any of our conclusions about a subject are without any factual evidential basis, then its basically no better than guess work.
Just to say I believe such and such because I feel like it(especially supernatural beliefs) stops a proper reasoned debate in its tracks, hence causing frustration which can then spill over into negativity.
So when you say thoughtful conclusion it is the thought process which may be questioned, which sometimes offends people.
Wouldn't you agree explaining how one comes to a conclusion is a valid questioning process even if it makes one uncomfortable

they have been, from their inception, a sect that was considered different from mainstream christianity.
they loved being different.
they bragged about being "persecuted.
The paradox is they have HAD to change and in doing so they somehow remain the same deluded bunch.
The changes or ( new light ) the faithful are obliged to accept, because the power house GB KNOW that even the rank & file would have sussed something was not adding up regarding their predictions. And so each new corner they turn morphs into a never ending circle.
No wonder many here have said ;..Enough!! Let me off this conning coil.
as many may be aware.
i don't like the man.
but i have chosen to review the first chapter of his book.. chapter 1... only a theory?.
Hi kate,I think only Dawkins really knows why he would call churchgoers uneducated. I suspect he is not being personal, but generalising which in the context of debate is understandable and of course as you have said there are churchgoers who would fit into the catagory of ' uneducated ' if against evidence to the contrary they cling on to the creationst line.
I think its more of a personality clash ie some folks just rub us up the wrong way.I don't think he'll ever be your pal?
Personaly I find him quite entertaining through the serious facade.

If only the delusion of hell was temporary. For some unfortunately it is apermanant fixture of their loving ? God .How sad

Ubm the belief that pigs can fly was never a fundemental christian belief,
Burning in hellfire eternal torment is still taught and believed
Non believers and believers alike are surely entitled to comment comment on any topic?
It is after all an open forum

this excellent 4 minute video will help to clear up a few common misunderstandings regarding evolution.. ....
Cantleave;...I think the middle bluey red may be a grey area!!
Kate .Isuspect you agree with the premise of the video.Would you agree also there are many many churchgoers who still believe man was created by god from the soil of the earth ( literally ) perhaps these are the types Dawkins refers to, I would have to agree with him.
