after a thorough investigation and weighing of the evidence the grand jury has decided not to indict the officer.. the reaction so far seems as predicted - people refuse to accept that the result represents justice despite claims that is what they wanted.. there is now violence and vandalism, including gunshots.
let's hope the police contain the troublemakers.. .
when you feed her "government is evil" paranoia.
LOL! I love that. :)
And yes, I fully embrace the fact that my label is 'anarchist' and 'socialist', and that today's governments ARE 'evil', for lack of a better word.
I hope that doesn't colour anyone's view when I post referenced facts. My opinion counts for nothing, as it should!
As Walt Whitman said (to paraphrase) "examine all that is presented to you, and reject what offends your soul'. That is what I do. And, yes, 'government' offends my soul. Hell, Simon, you are originally British - doesn't classism offend you? Surprised. (and not sarcastically, just really).

ADCMS ... I hear you. It's just a different POV. To clarify, I do not speak of the American people as individuals, who are (imho) extremely misled and seem to value freedom and personal rights. I speak of the power brokers who rule your country (and mine).

It's interesting, this debate.
Especially interesting to see the opinions of those who do not "live" it.
Yeah, I'm 'white' (I prefer to think of it as rather pasty, pinkish, but whatever) ...... and I realize that I can't know what it's like to be 'brown' in the USA. I can only KNOW what I've experienced. And since I don't "LIVE" in America. I am ignorant.
That's one thing I wish all non-American (USA) posters would realize. It's not like Canada. It's not like Britain. It's not like anywhere else. It is unique to the USA, in this 21st century.
There are wounds that are open and pustulating. There are wounds that are deep, and fester in the American consciousness.
Racial discrimination still exists - for cryin' out loud, African Americans were not even considered 'persons with rights' before the 70s! It's a new country, and the drama of healing from slavery and oppression is playing out on the world stage, like no other.
Let's look at the underlying causes , which are REAL. When I hear black people on this forum saying "you don't understand, my son has to fear the police because he is black",,,,,, I don't hear much empathy on this forum.
I think of Josie (MRs Jones), the most reasonable of posters, talking about how her son(s) have been taught to ALWAYS kow tow to the police, because, even thought they are GOOD CITIZENS, they may be profiled, and fuck, man, KILLEd because of some yahoo cop who fears people of colour.
Was this man responsible for his own demise? In my opinion, he acted foolishly, and violently, and for that he was killed. I can understand the police officer's fear and automatic response to his life being threatened by a BIG MAN who, apparently, had no intent of being law-abiding. The cop was probably in fear of his life, and followed his training. I don't like cops, in general, but it's hard to see this situation in a favorable light with regards to Mr. Brown.
Sentiment is important in general terms - YES, we have a problem. In practical terms, in reference to this case, I don't think the police officer did anything 'wrong' ........... other than responding to a thread to his personal safety, in the only way he could, in the situation.

i just happend to wonder if the current issue had any hidden goodies.
imagine my delight!.
a gold star to the first person to correctly identify the image!.
Agreed, DD.
It's unfortunate that you can't bring up something that is interesting to YOU, without having a whole lot of cult buttons being pushed in others.
This subliminal thing has been the topic of discussion on variious occasions. It's a FACT that advertisers use this technique (in the US, it is 'illegal' to use in commercial advertising).
As far as people go, we run the gamut here on JWN. As exJWs, we have a lot of people who are overly skeptical of EVERYTHING (and rightly so). Try not to feel too disrespected. lol, some people here still believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. It's the pendulum swing - believe NOTHING unless it is proven to the nth degree, and you can't blame exJWs for feeling that way.

Agreed, LisaRose, and it's very simple ...... it's human nature to put up defence mechanisms when we, or our belief systems are attacked.
That's what I keep 'preaching' to the other atheists on here ....... STOP attacking and ridiculing - you are only making people be more defensive.

You just described human history, not just American history. Empires are not built on "playing nice".
And excuse me for chuckling at this post. The problem being, most "Empires" don't claim to be saving the world. America claims to be the champion of the world ........ the ultimate of "playing nice".
I think that particular myth has been dispelled, at least to the rest of the world. The USA is no different from the Romans - conquering civilizations, having superior technology, and claiming to be saving cultures, when you are actually destroying them.
Let's not pretend, okay? I hate that - there's something about pretension that gets on my nerves. Hmmm, perhaps because I am an exJW and detest 'group think' (which describes patriotism to a 'T')?

That's a good thing, and I'm sure left them feeling happy. There's no need to attack these folks, and act like a ranting psycho.
I don't believe in being nasty, either. My approach is different, as in my personal life I am an advocate for CSA survivors, so I usually inform them of the child rape issue.
Glad you didn't 'stumble' and hurt yourself! ;)

wal-mart, which pays a top wage of $12.00+ to its full-time employees, is under attack, once again, by its employees and those who would like to unionize them.. i can't speak to the usa, but here in canada, most wal-mart employees are not full time.
it is mostly a part-time employer, so zero benefits.
in my opinion, that makes the $12.00+ look a lot smaller when you envision the actual paycheque.
Listener
Do you work part time at one job? And pay your own rent? AND eat *real food*?
Just curious ..........
damn, I shouldn't have kept reading, now I want to reply to EVERYONE .......... lol, good night!

adjusted knowledge --- from page 1 - I'm not sure what you are upset about. I said 12+,which I had read in several places, and indeed, you said this:
Walmart will claim an average pay of around $12.92 an hour.
So, what's your beef? You even state that you feel the median wage is closer to $10/hour, which is even less than my "$12.00+" figure.
.
Also, did you note that my benefits comment was limited to CANADA - read my OP, in which I clearly state "here in Canada". So, are you talking about the USA when you say that 60% are full time and have all these benefits? Or Canada?
I've only read page 1, and it's plain to see that this is a relevant discussion.
TT2C and JeffT, yes, agree with both of your comments. TT2C - wages *is* an issue - it's hard to work on a hungry belly. And people who have not endured long-term hunger pangs, well, it's like having a baby - they don't understand. Jeff, yeah, though my boycott was steadfast, in the past year I've had to buy some food at Wal-Mart. The rise in prices (you wouldn't believe it - we pay at least double what you pay), combined with a fixed income and special diet, have sadly, force me to spend about $25/month there. :( It's a compromise of principles, I realize that many people have to make. If I had kids to feed, I would be first in line at Wal-Mart! We all do what we can.
Okay, I must rest, but more replies later.
Great discussion so far, folks.
;)
