To me is irritating "you used to".. you used to go there (was there once), you used to eat this (ate it once), you used to buy this... etc.

The time or the lenght of the skirt had changed. JWs moved fashion from 1950's to 1970's. In my old KH it was always below the knee.

The PURE Language - Finaly
by Ish Elon inwho knows how many scribal errors the book we call 'the bible' contains?
the book of the law as written by the hand of moses has been found once more.
king josiah was the last king to see it and jeremiah the last prophet.

Some ex-JWs feels that they have extra special fifht-sixth-9 x sence that allows them to communicate with God, and have find meaning in the Bible and its prophecies; and are on mission to spread out their dellusions. Some of the started "speak languages" and do rain dances.
I would be interested to read the old scroll for a personal interest, as I have read Homer, Ovid, or Jordanes, but nothing more.

I was a poll worker
by Hortensia ini worked the election yesterday, here in california, poll worker, from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. it was fun and interesting, went pretty smoothly, nice day.
it was very depressing to come home, look at the news, and find that the republicans now control the senate.. .
do you think canada would take me?

Hortensia, politics does not last too long and in two years this election will be forgotten. It is politics that is fluid and nothing to get hang on. When Obama was elected, Texas and rest of the Bible Belt wanted to secede. Rural areas wanted their own state from state, where large urban cities voted blue. Yet the rural areas are overrepresented by political power. Posts were full of evangelical christians who wanted to move to Uganda or Malawi where there was "true" Christian paradise without all these faggots getting equal rights...
Magnum when I see present republicans I see evangelical right wing extremists having much closer to the European fascism of the 1920's and far from moderate, internationally respected party of Reagan or Eisenhower. Religion is a private matter and does not belong to politics. I do not care about anyone religion as it is not forced upon me. The same is for me sexuality, which belongs to bedroom and not in public regardless it is gay or straight. Free love tree hugging hippies are nothing for me either. Current GOP creed feels to me who does not agree with us is against and must be leftist, liberal, etc. which I am not. I love army and support it. I am against socialized economy and welfare as way of living which many D are pushing. World is far too complex than from the isolated communities of the flyover counties by population that see the time through 1950's glasses. Either way, believing in "D" and "R" as way to solve everything is illusion. It is politics and game. Nothing more. Politicians from every spectrum do not care about you nor have any other interest from you than get your vote. This was known to Founding Fathers or French political philosophers of the 18th century. Also find out what Thomas Paine though of minimum or living wage 220 years ago... What USA needs is moderate party. When democracy goes limps only on left or right, there is always a problem.

Is The Bible Now Obsolete - On Moral Standards?
by metatron insometimes, i feel like my life has been summed up by a grateful dead quote: "what a long strange trip it's been".. .
after many years as a witness, i discovered that i worked with gay people - and that they struggled to pay a mortgage and had pretty much the same problems as everyone else.
what was i concerned about?

Slavery is often the most abused morality issue to make Christianity look good by spreading lies that as a faith it had always opposed slavery. Of course this is not true, but this is monopolized by Christianity due private conduct of many anti-slavery clergy. Greek philosophers in Hellenistic era and Persian kings debated slavery and saw it as something moraly wrong. They were not Christians. This was also picked up by Romans philosophers who channeled this idea to the early Christian fathers. St. Augustine saw it as necessary evil and John Chrysostom as a confirmation of man's fall from the grace. Overall Christian position to slavery from among main denominations was lukewarm. Many early medieval kingdoms abandoned slavery for military reason, not for moral. There were anti-slavery bishops like St. Adalbert (+997), but Catholic and Orthodox church never took official position in that time. Slavery in kingdom of Bohemia was abolished by royal decree in 1092 because it was easier to create army from peasants than slaves. Church did absolutely nothing. Church wasd also against abolishement of serfdom in the 18th century, which was also ended by royal decrees (Joseph II in 1782) or by French guillotine (1789). Everytime I read how Church stood up against the slavery, where are the official acts?

Bible moral standards were obsolete at the moment they were completed. Western civilization derives its laws and judicial proceeding from Roman Law not from biblical. This was already known in the late antiquity that fundamentalist and theocratic approach to biblical morality is not possible nor desirable. However, in past 1600 years in regular intervals came crazy movements that tried to enforce biblical standard upon society with catastrophic results. Christianity is in its substance oriental religion, which is not compatible with civic freedom and individuality, something that was born in ancient Greece and defined a world west of Jerusalem. Late antiquity attempted to compromise bilblical morality with reality creating this bipolar view on what is moral and what is wrong. Christians claims that they were always against slavery, oppression, etc. yet most of these ideas were copied by non-christian thinkers.

Viviane, it is well known that homophobic people tends to hide their same-sex desires behind hatefull anti-gay biases. Leader of UK nazis movement was gay and died of AIDS and have Jewish bf in the closet. Leader of East German neonazi was also gay and died in from AIDS complications in 1990's. I am not sure how many people get preoccupied with thinking what two adults do in their privacy and generally nobody want to know...

Civil marriages in Europe are in existence from 1791-1805 as a result of French Revolution and subsequent occupation of most of Europe by French troops. In most of Europan countries under rules of secularization, every marriage license have to be issued by local townhall, even when the ceremony was performed by priest in church. Marriage is foremost civic contract, not religious.
