After long night of studyging an dlack of sleep and no coffee in the morning, I am like zombie as well.

Question for those converted to JW as adults

in my case (baptized at 20/21) it was the only religion i knew; my mom, her mom, and favorite sister were jw; and the teachings of no hellfire or immortal soul made sense to me.. .

I grew up with it. My mom was brought into cult by my father sister-in-law who was JW since 1950's. She started to study with both of them, my father was a victim of political purges in 1969, difficult times socially and economically. Then came the buzz to 1975, I think my parents studied for years, but my dad refused to get baptised, but my mom did around 1975 or so. Many people who joined in 1960's & 1970's saw only god Jehovah capable smashing communist system.

I think it is important to say that JWs did indeed suffered and many died for their beliefs. Other thing is that many JWs are anti-semitics, especially the older generation I knew and many were interwar and postwar convert. Addtionally, not all JWs sufferred equally, and many lived in the WWII imprisonment in relative comfortability working as servant for highest Nazi officials likes Heydrich and after war revolutionary and various retribution tribunals wanted to prosecute them for compliance with the Nazis. The same issue is raised with victims of Stalinist oppression where some JWs collaborated with the communist regime and were informant for the state police. I had checked some of the names in the communist files opened after 1989 and I was actually suprised to see one of the elder name there as informant with his wife, DOB, addresses, and various information they provided to the state police. Some of the JWs that were well known in 1960's but died since since then were actually very active with the communist police. These information are well known and published. If there was collaboration during Stalin era, there was certainly during A.H.

I have experienced anti-semitism from elder JWs in Eastern Europe long time ago. Anti-semitism was widespread in KH especially among JWs who went to cult before, during and right after WWII. One elder sister regularly called Jews as Jesus killers who will not be resurrected.
I am also skeptical on some of the WWII accounts as I have read some postwar documents from retribution tribunals that charged some of the JWs with collaboration and compliance with Nazi regime. When I will be back in Prague, I am thinking to request from DoJ material on JW that deal with this issue. While I am not aware of any case when JW was prosecuted to the full extent of the law, but some of these accussations were brought up into the court and they will be available at archives per requests. For example Reinhard Heydrich, third highest ranking Nazi official assassinated by Czech underground resistance in 1942 employed bunch of JWs as his servants at chateau outside of Prague. These JWs lived there in relative comfortability and abundance at Brezany until May 1945. After war some of the JWs were indeed charged by revolutionary tribunal as did many people who were employed by Nazi regime.

Barious biomathematic models estimates that HIV crossed human population between 1885-1905 in time of genocide of Belgium Congo. I had read somwhere in peer journal that HIV was described as early as 1930's and that was years ago. Biological material from USA and Europe are preserved with HIV samples as early as 1960's. HIV is in population for many years, but it took about 70 years before it was noticed by scientific community. Ebola is known since 1976.

michelle, there is a problem with a Christian thinking and theology which insists that Jews must believe in the same as they do because they got it wrong and Christianity right. From the Jewish point, there cannot be a redeemer for sins, G-d could not suffer and die, there is no abyss of sin between humanity and G-d that is bridged by Jesus. There is more to it than accepting Jesus as messiah for Jews and Christianity is way different than Judaism. This is fact.

USA is the only western democracy which has relativelly good demographics. Russian, European, and Japanese is againg and dying off rapidly. China is not far behidn iwth the one child policy. It will eventually slow the economic growth as the population will mirror Japan in next 40 years.
fulltimestudent. what you descibe can be summarized as illusion of freedom. Additionally, majority of citizens in democracies absolutelly do not care about politics and especially the middle class which is passive and resigned. In 1960's there the same mass protests everywhere without making a dent into political structure of these countreis and in the 1970's these protestes were forgottoen. In 2010-13 there were huge protests everywhere in EU with millions of people in the streets from Madrid, to Athens, Prague, Riga, Ljubjana to Budapest, and nothing happend in the long run.

Chinese economy is really unknown and upredictable as there is a lot of internal, hidden problems. It is mixed of capitalism and communism where the debt level is hard to estimate, and much of the money is waisted on programs that do have not value for the economy. China due its size have a significant potential but it will not be able to postpone economic problem indefinitely. In 1980's I heard how Japan will rule the world, today it is said about China. USA debt is a major burden on American economy, but Japans and British debts are the biggest problems for industrial world.

Rattigan.. He did not. To Jews, Jesus was another failed prophet, one many that claimed to be messiah. However, only Jesus became world mainstream religion that has nothing to do with original Jewish idea of Messiah as king, priest, and prophet. Jesus have not returned. He is dead and he is not coming, at least based on the Jewish faith.
michelle.. Judaism and Christianity are not possible to reconcile due different beliefs. NT is nonsense for Jews. Centerpiece of Jewish faith is direct service to G-d as a way to restore humanity in the eyes of the Creator, not in a belief that some dude like Jesus had done that. For Judaism there is no way to accept that Jesus bridged through his sacrifice a gap between human and the G-d. This is even against direct what Jewish Covenant is about. What about Islam? Viking gods? Are these religions as well a part of God's plan?
desings, it is so frustrating dealing with Christians who are so blinded to the idea that Jesus is not Messiah for Jews. On top of it, I am not sure what is more ridiculous, the claim that Jews do not understand OT and are wrong on it, or Jews fails to see divine inspiration in NT...
Chris Tann, I am not Jew, but I married to one. I studied with rabbi and got a differnet perspective on OT and aspects of Jewish faith that is very different from Christianity and certainly from JW. Jews do not deny existence of Jesus as a historical figure, but they do not see him as a Messiah. Additionally considering that Jesus failed to return despite making claims to his followers only ensures me that he was a false prophet.
