Is it me or are the Watchtower Publications disappearing ??????
by run dont walk ini was at the hospital the other day in the waiting room for about 2 hours with a friend, and i noticed only one awake magazine from 2000 in the pile of reading material.. i always thought that the watchtower was trying to "preach the good news to all the inhabited earth before the end comes".
well , they don't like the internet, which is the # 1 way to inform people, you cannot get a subscription anymore unless someone at the hall does it for you or you are still attending, probaly why i didn't see any at the hospital, or lawyers office, or doctor's office etc etc etc.. it seems to me that they are trying to limit what info gets out to the outside world, is this not contradicting all they have preached the last 50 years.. no subscriptions for anyone who might want one ?????????.
no new books, for anyone who is not a jw.. what do you think ????????.

I always toss them in the garbage when I see them laying around the hospital (where I work) or the college (where I go to class)...not that it happens that often...
But maybe instead, I should get a stamp made that says
WARNING! This cult protects wife abusers and child molesters! www.silentlambs.com

Which way will the Society go because of the Internet?
by be wise ini've only learned the truth about this society over the last 5 months or so, so i'm not sure what the difference is to say - 2 years ago.
do you think the society will now get even more cultish in it's methods of teaching and more heavy handed if they feel things are slipping?
i don't feel i'm being over the top here because i've experienced very heavy handed talks at the assemblies and kingdom hall in the past that are just plain scare tactics but this just makes people ask more questions ??

Based on my experiences talking to active dubs on Beliefnet...they'll be able to maintain a smaller core of members who keep their conceit that they're right and everybody else is wrong and telling lies about them. People believe what they want to believe. Until they are faced with something they can't dispute (ie- "it can't happen" or "that doesn't happen" happens to them) they'll be able to squeeze their eyes shut and ignore.

Jesika & pr_capone's wedding plans -- Friday, July 11, 2003 at 7:00 p.m.
by cruzanheart inwe changed the wedding from saturday in order to give the newlyweds a chance to spend the weekend relaxing and getting settled as an official couple.
also, by having it friday night there is a chance, a possibility, that big tex will be able to get the night off so he can give the bride away (*sniffle*).
and there is also a chance, a possibility, that our beloved district overbeer will perform the wedding.

Did anything a householder said ever make an impression on you?
by Alleymom incoming at this as a householder rather than an ex-jw, i'd love to hear from any of you about comments from householders that made an impression on you, back when you were active in the door-to-door work.
since the jw's first knocked at my door 13 years ago, i've done my best to give them something to think about every time they knock at my door.
i always introduce myself by name and try to get their names.

The most upsetting thing that ever happened to me in field service was when a nice elderly lady who had been a return visit, who had recently had a death in the family, burst into tears at the door and asked me, "Why won't you just leave me alone???"
I was floored. All I could do was tell her how sorry I was and run out the door. Here I thought I had a "good" RV and she had been enjoying our discussions, and I was making her unhappy and putting pressure on her by talking to her about this stuff. I had been trying to put the "positive JW spin" on every objection she had, tried to turn all conversation to how my religion was right...and I'd hurt this nice little old lady...made her cry in front of relative strangers (I have a huge soft spot for little old ladies) The sisters in the car group kept talking about how she had the wrong view and we had the right view, but it didn't convince me. I knew I'd done something bad.
I felt sick. I wanted to go home. I never had that 'innocent joy' in service, where you think you're doing a good thing untarnished by cruelty, ever again. I realized that I was either an annoyance, a bother, an embarrassment (how do I politely get rid of this person) or a source of hurt for almost every person I ran into in service.
I couldn't ignore my conscience anymore, when I stood at a door and kept talking to some poor person who had the misfortune of being home and being too polite to refuse to answer the door or tell us to f*@& off, made them stand there talking to us and squirm, trying to figure how to gracefully extracate themselves from the conversation without us ever coming back and bothering them again.
If I did what my conscience told me and let them off the hook quick and dirty."You interested? No? OK, thank you!" I was being a bad JW and not acting like I really believed I was saving people from Armageddon...if I did what the society taught me I was supposed to, I felt like a louse. I was so glad to realize I could be relieved of that burden!!

OK, now let me use the example of my brother-in-law. He is 15 years old and is an unbaptized publisher.
I do see your point, however, I think the society has been pretty clear about the status of unbaptised children of JWs, especially once they reach adulthood...heck, most are pressured to get baptised wayyy before then. That's why I made the earlier comment about being too old to hide behind their non-JW dad. It's my understanding you can call yourself anything you want, but you should be living in accordance with the rules of the religion (if your religion is as big on following the rules as the JW). What doesn't make sense to me, is that they are willing to be identified as JWs...apparently go out in service and preach to the other players (even if they're not baptised they have to be "approved" to go in service, no? Why is their behavior not an issue with this?)...talk about being a JW...yet they do things that a JW should not be doing. I don't really care, I just don't understand why, if they want to act that way, why they don't just dump the religion completely. I guess because being JWs has evidently not had unpleasant consequences and kept them from doing what they wanted (unlike some of us).
At a minimum, the society should be doing what it usually does when it wants to get the point across to the rank and file without actually coming out and saying something: including talks on the District Conventions which make vague reference to 'sports figures and other celebrities who claim to be JWs but are clearly not following Jehovah's guidelines for approved behavior' or some such claptrap...especially since the Williams' are in the news so much.
So, do they like the publicity? Do they like the $$ they're getting? Are the local elders chickensh*t? (the flag incident on international tv should have been enough to get the attention of somebody at Bethel regardless) Does Daddy Williams have lawyers who have the society by the nuts and telling them if they go after the girls there'll be consequences?? (there's a pleasant thought)

It could just be me, but I've never heard a single witness "use the Williams' "being" JWs as some sort of smoke-screen to make the religion look like it might actually have some relatively normal members." Nor have I ever heard anyone say '"JWs can play sports - just look at the Williams sisters!"' (except on this DB) So not sure if it is really an issue at all
OK, so you've never tried to explain to someone how destructive and controling this religion is, and have the person not believe you (even think you're grossly exaggerating your own experiences) because they've heard of certain celebrities who are JWs, or because they personally know a JW who breaks the rules and gets away with it?
Well, all I can say is, be glad.

What teejay thinks is that Asleif's comments have zero relevance unless the Williams sisters are baptized JWs.
I'm still not really understanding what difference it makes. They have referred to themselves quite clearly in interviews as being JWs. They apparently do not dispute articles written about them that refer to them as JWs.
And (this is the important part), neither does the society.
We know that they are not following "the rules" for being JWs (more power to them), but I have never seen or heard of the society or any individual JWs correcting the public's misunderstanding that what the Williams sisters do is OK for JWs to do.
Knowing what I know about the society, if it were following its own guidelines (which, of course, I know they don't do), the society should be putting pressure on the Williams family to either shape up or stop telling the media they are JWs. That's hypocritical (surprise, surprise).
When the news media reports that a bunch of elders defraud an elderly woman of her life savings, or a JW husband kills his wife and family, the society is quick to distance itself. The offenders are either df'd or, if they were never baptised, it is made clear to the media that they were never 'really' JWs...this doesn't happen with "celebrity" JWs like the Williams or the Jacksons.
JWs like to bask in the reflected glory of celebrity JWs, but they hate it when that glory is tarnished by behavior that would get your butt drug in the back room of every hall I'm aware of.

Hey, I'm the last person who would condemn them for doing whatever they want with their lives. Heck, I behave in a much more stunningly untheocratic manner than they do. Being un-theocratic and un-JW-like is a very very good thing. They can dance naked around a Christmas tree while smoking a cigarette and I'll say more power to them (well, except I think smoking is bad and did before I was ever a JW).
My problem in this is with the society (what a shock) and with JWs who use the Williams' "being" JWs as some sort of smoke-screen to make the religion look like it might actually have some relatively normal members.
Let me say this a little more clearly. What I have a problem with, is when x-JWs say things like, "I hated growing up a JW because JWs aren't allowed to play sports." and people reply, "JWs can play sports - just look at the Williams sisters!"
The Williams family are not 'normal' JWs...neither were the Jacksons. And we all know that if some JW kid wanted to play on his or her school's tennis team, if the parents were going to follow the WT party line they wouldn't be allowed to do it...and saying, "But the Williams sisters play tennis and they're JWs" wouldn't cut any mustard with the parents, the elders or the society...so when it comes right down to it, most JWs don't consider them 'worthy of emulation' either.
Whether they're baptised or not doesn't make any difference...how many people on this board were children of JWs and were never baptised yet were/are still expected to obey the rules?
