I was an MS and elder, and I thought the meetings were mind numblngly boring. I worked to try to make my parts interesting, sometimes with success someimtes probably not. What can you expect? The meetings are basically cut and paste from Brooklyn (or wherever the old men are now). They could just have easily taped the damn things in NY and played it over the intercom. And with each passing year the control increased (which is the primary reason I became disillusioned and began charting my move out of the WT).

Jehovah's witness meetings are NOT BORING......
by punkofnice in...i was told but they usually were as i look back.. as a lad i'd sit and look to see who the lights would fall on.
i'd get an almond and see how long i could suck it before i chewed at it.
i'd imagine playing rock'n'roll on the congregation's piano.. how did you get through the meetings when you were bored?.

Vivane,
You have taken over my role as a sarcastic wise ass. I'm impressed; you are better than I at it. I will have to re-double my efforts. Spot on and well done.

Cofty, Simon, Snare and On the Way Out (and others),
We need to compile the best of the couter-theist responses and arguments you all have provided on this forum so that we can simply copy and paste it into replies and responses to the the ridiculous statements made by so many theists. Compile, summarize and hit the send button whenever needed. You guys have made so many compelling arguments that it is difficult for me to understand how any can leave the WT, come to this site and still remain tied to their theist beliefs. For long. And they will be much better off once they leave them behind. I wish we could convince them of this, but it seems they have a mental block.

A more accurate evaluation would be that Tammy had 1 post she repeated 13,000 times.

Blip! The radar has blipped. I'm on it. 'chat' booked in for Sunday.......
by Captain Blithering ina young, progressive, kind elder wants to have a chat with me on sunday after the meeting.
we've talked before and been quite open about the judgemental attitudes 'we' have as witnesses, and he was completely in agreement, stating that he's never understood the beard thing among other issues, and wants to see the society moving forward by change..
i've no doubt he just wants to encourage me to up my hours or reach out again, but it's nerve wracking, as i know i'll say something i'll regret.

CB,
Assume bad things will happen. He may have some of his own doubts and concerns, but at the end of the day he will almost certainly default to the JW elder stance. Anything you say can and will be used against you. I would say sweet things about the GB and all things JW. Exit quietly and quickly with yourself and those belonging to you if possible. Any other options is fraught with peril. The BOE will think they are doing god's (and the GB's) will. You can so quickly go from being a brother in love and christ to an enemy of the deepest and darkest kind. I was an elder; I've seen it occur many times.

So Metatron do you believe in the common conspiracy theories asociated with 9/11? (It's likely you do - fits your profile), that George W conspried with the other elves and misfits (I mean come on, Rumsfield and Cheny aren't geniuses) to fly planes into the buildings while simultaneously blowing them up from below?

Ha! Funny WitnessMyFury. Belief may or may not be a form of mental illness, but giving over all of your thought processes to a religion/belief simply cannot be good for one's mental faculties. Studies have suggested that the very relgious, especaily those in high control groups, often have less mental acuity. Duh. That's who we were as JWs; unfortunately, too many ex-JWs want to hold onto a failed belief system rather than explore all of the potential of their minds and lives.

Snare, you may have figured Metatron out. According to experts, conspiracy theorists typically have low self esteem, and the 'special feeling' of being right or superior they get from holding on dearly to their conspiracy theories fills the void. Arguments advanced by conspiracy theorists tell you more about the believer than about the event, so Snare you are spot on.
A healthy amount of skepticism should be a goal of all of us, but conspiracy theorists take it to ridiculous heights. Conspiracy believers are highly doubtful about information from the government or other sources they consider suspect. But, without criticism, believers accept any source that supports their preconceived views, which is what we see with Met's OP. And trying to reason with them is typically a waste of time. They and only they know the 'real truth,' while everyone else is mindlessly following the government, media, instituion, etc.
Experiments have also shown that conspiracy believers not only often subscribe to a variety of well-known conspiracy theories, but also frequently agree with an invented conspiracy. So yes, it appears that you can tell more about the person than the topic in this matter.
Sounds kinda like the Reverend on this site. Met and the Rev have a lot in common.

As regards the tsunami I think it is interesting to observe the 'blame game.' Muslims were widely criticised for failing to provide charitable contributions because they blamed the victims, who were largely Muslims, claiming that god allowed the tsunami because they weren't 'good' Muslims. Some Hindus blamed the Christians for the tsunami. Some right wing U.S. politicians and pastors also blamed the victims, indicating it was god's retribution against non-Christians.
Geeeshh. Why is anyone a theist?
