I've talked to a number of people who have tried reparative therapy, and it's a topic that's been explored by a number of gay JWs. None of them have resulted in a gay-to-straight switch. The gay JW support group actively discourages its members from undergoing it as they've concluded that it's mentally harmful. Being celibate for your faith is one thing, but imposing active heterosexuality is another, one that can have unfortunate consequences:

Sexual orientation is not a "choice" and therefore cannot be changed through reparative therapy. If someone doesn't want to practice in same sex intercourse they do have that choice, but that doesn't mean their attraction to the same sex has ceased to exist. Psychology is there to help people and therfore shouldn't give them an unrealistc hope.

they both live in the same town, about 800 miles from where i had been living.

I too was impressed by your approach Confession, there's a lot to admire about "heaping burning coals"! I wonder what you would do in my situation...
2 years after I'd stopped attending meetings my mother told the CO that I was in a same-sex relationship and judicial moves were made. I ignored them and it came to nought so I'm not disfellowshipped. My eldest brother immediately cut contact but my mother and other brother with whom I was in business remained in almost daily contact. My family had been close, they were good company and we socialised, holidayed etc etc but the closeness dwindled as I no longer shared their beliefs or social lives. They refused to spend any time with my partner, now of 7+ years. The business relationship ended and my brother still wanted to meet for lunch occasionally but it was chat-lite and all about his life and I stopped meeting him 2 years agobecause I found seeing him rather depressing. My mum I still see about once a month, she's in her 70s, and alone. We had been very close but her instigation of having me disfellowshipped seriously fractured that. We have worked through it and while she's interested in knowing about my life, wont be part of it. She's lovely but devout, and would cut contact if I were disfellowshipped.
So, I've cut my elderly mum some slack, but not my brother... does it seem harsh?

JWs can't discuss politics, debate religion, science or philosophy, their education is curtailed, outside interests discouraged and contact limited to people who all share their mindset. After saying how great the latest WT/assembly/ new thought is they've got nothing left to do but talk about each other.

Is the WTS preparing for a MASS EXODUS?
by passwordprotected inhobo ken and i were chatting about this yesterday.. the wts has past experience of losing vast numbers of members very quickly.
from their post-25 and post-75 experiences they will know how best to prepare their organisational structure to remain afloat when they experience another exodus.. we're only 5 years from the 100 year anniversary of ct russell walking into the dining room and announcing the gentile times had ended.
since then, millions of people have molded and adjusted their lives and personal expectations based on the date 1914. the wts must know that 2015 is going to bring with it one or two upset jws.... so, is the wts preparing for a mass exodus right now?.

The nice thing about having an evolving "truth" is you can change with the times. JWs have and will no doubt continue to. I've come across a number of JWs whos relationship with their religion is very similar to other main stream Christians i.e. not devout, letter of the law types, with more of a social approach to their faith. They may be viewed as flakey by hardliners from within but they seem content. These may become an ever increasing component, puting in very few hours (or 15mins) each month and missing meetings for other events. These people weren't dfed in my time and don't seem to be now.
When you leave being a JW you percieve it with fresh eyes and because you've been duped once start seeing signs where there aren't any. Cutting back on publication and centralising authority seems sensible to me, becoming a more lightweight and possibly responsive corporation. Locally they're experiencing a resurgence through immigration - but globally it seems like stagnation persists which means a gradual shrinkage may follow. Saying that, the winds of economic change may blow some into the kingdom hall.
