the story is beyond excellent.
every line is so well crafted and the story, published in the new yorker magazine in 1997, is much more than two young men falling in love.
one of the major themes of the movie is fear.
I thought the short story was excellent and didn't think the film would improve upon it. I was half right, it didn't improve upon the central relationship, but it did convincingly flesh out the wives characters. Maybe because I'd already read the story I remained unaffected by Jack & Ennis but felt totally gutted for Lureen and Alma.
Nice comparison though Pete.

In the case of this especially provocative subject of minority practices, why would a Christian desire to interfere, when it is allegedly the Christian that is in the minority? Further, if they are to busy themselves in politics at all, surely it should be to the extent of preserving their own rights to worship and live their life to the standards they desire, rather than impose their standards on everyone else?
Are no Christians to reply to this?
Maybe, as Witnesses, they got tired of 'waiting on Jehovah' so now think it's important that their religious views are expressed politically. Does that indicate a lack of faith in god?

When I wrote that LT was a stirrer I forgot to add
The question on this thread is subtly different from the others currently bobbing about, but maybe some are blind to that difference, just as they have been blind to LT's musing on this thread. The topic will continue to make regular appearances because it's not settled in society at large, with difference in attitudes and labels (marriage/civil union) according to nation/metropolitan area being well reflected by posters on the board.
Gay bulls... only a hetero would compare himself to the bovine. Us gays will always be that little different and take our cues from those impeccaply dressed penguins.
edited to add: if you can't take being called a bigot, don't post on these threads.
three cheers for australia!
muslims who want to live under islamic sharia law were told on wednesday to get out of australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.
a day after a group of mainstream muslim leaders pledged loyalty to australia at a special meeting with prime minister john howard, he and his ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.
*shudders at the memory*

I guess the Australians are asking for the same respect that they gave the Aborigines...
is your belief moral, social or practical?
would you feel the same way if there were absolutely no religious influence on the matter pro or con?.
regardless of your belief, does every adult have a fundimental right to marry anyone of his or her choosing, regardless of gender?.
I encourage you to read "Death of the West", the author knows what he is talking about.
and he's a tad extreme in his views. All this talk of biological lines and race - is your race worth more than others? does race hold intinsic value?

Its not really an issue that ive spent many hours pondering over
Funnily enough, neither have I, but a friend that's a lawyer for the Scottish Exec was just telling me yesterday that it's a question they're having to respond to. And it's a little more interesting than the usual gay marriage question that has been eternally hashed out here.

Stoning was always over a little too quick. The scolds bridle and a hot stake are my preferred punishment. Perhaps the latter could be an alternative to windfarms round your way, keep you toasty!
