Whacky comments! What the craziest comment you've ever heard?
by toweragent inlast week a sister in my new hall made the following comment,.
"a brother once told me that it is better to be wrong with the organization, than to be right and be on your own without the organization.".
wow.

An elder, in a talk from the platform, I think it was the service meeting.
it was a talk about remaining clean, not watching worldly tv shows/movies. He gave an example of how on a recent night he visited a young married couple, he knocked on their front door.........and as one of them opened the front door, the other one turned the TV off!!!!
Now, brothers, why? Why? Would someone do something like that? What are you trying to hide? What was it on the TV that you didn't want anyone to see?
At this point, we are all daydreaming, naturally assuming this is a hypothetical example, made up to illustrate a point. But...
then he said ( in a voice heavy with implication ) isn't it interesting brothers and sisters......I don't see that young couple here at the meeting tonight!!!! Everyone went rigid, everyone knew who wasn't there, it was a small congregation!!
So wrong, that at the time I assumed that when he stepped off the platform he was probably going to be carted off to the loony bin, or at least be asked to step down. But, no, nothing happened to him, everyone got the message though ..... There's something wrong with that young couple. I wonder if anyone told them about it.
I felt so bad for them, it was slander, what that elder did, and everyone just sucked it up.
I remember thinking, isn't it good manners to turn the TV off when someone visits?

The New Diary of Winston Smith
by WinstonSmith inwe had to go off grid for a time, time and half a time as we thought we had been outed.
fortunately it was a false alarm, but it was a stressful time.
i asked for my original diary thread to be deleted in case there could be anything on there to identlfy mrs smith and i. i am always very careful when posting, and am sure there was nothing on there, but felt it best to have it removed in order to be as cautious as a dove.

Avoiding Homelessness
by magotan ini'm falling apart here.
the false teachings of the jw enrage me; we started covering the information for the jeremiah book, and i was outraged at how they twist up the scriptures to meet what they want to say.
my dad wants to consider the "god's love" book during family worship evening.

Hey magotan, go on reddit, look up the JW subreddit, there's a guy there who was in a similar situation to you. He was homeless, his JW mum repeatedly kicked him out, he joined the army....recently did an AMA ( ask me anything ) read his story & message him. I'm pretty sure he was American.
Avoid homelessness at all costs, it sucks - I did it and survived :) wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

Books that make you go hmm....
by jgnat init's occurred to me that i have been reshaped by the books i have read, taking my new knowledge for granted, and forgetting that those around me have not been on the same journey.
as a consequence sparks fly, as iron sharpening iron, as we strive to understand each other (or to insist that we are not the same).
there are a few books that stand out, as i refer to them over and over again.

I love a well stocked bedside table full of books, currently I have :
Richard Dawkins - reading the god delusion and the magic of reality
Reading atheists literature has been deeply rewarding, I'm also looking forward to getting to crisis of conscience but its expensive so will have to wait a bit...
All time favorites that I've read over & over:
the secret history by Donna Tartt :( the loneliness of adolescence, not fitting in & wanting to belong + suspense!
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, it's extremely well written, we have more freedom than ever before & we still manage to stuff it up in so many ways. I think it resonated with me because JW taught that worldly freedom is easy, and it's not.
We need to talk about Kevin by Lionel shrivel, I've read this before & after kids - messes with your head! Ahhhhhhh parenting!!!!
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, I don't like historical novels but I loved this :) it's genius!! Politics & religion!!!

Take care of yourself, hope you feel better soon. A rum or 2/3 may help? Or red wine, whatever?
I just watched the documentary "sick" on the US health system & I'm glad to realize you are Canadian!

Short Introduction and Reply to Lazarus
by Fading Begins inhi lazarus - i'm new here, and i'm a little disturbed by some of the judgmental comments i have read here concerning your situataion.
isn't that what the borg has done to all of us?
each individuals situation can only be judged if that person walks in your shoes.

What about the ones who WATCHED THE PATIENT DIE?
by Terry ini was deep into my jehovah's witness life pre 1975 as the drumbeat to that mysterious yet specific date loomed large.. it was presented as a countdown to jehovah's promise of a 1000 year reign.
"how fitting" was the popular phrase!.
but, it was more like a countdown of a different sort.. .

If they win, they win big.
If they lose....well they've already lost family, friends, marriages, careers, financial security, the only thing that makes sense is to keep on playing.....I've never thought of it like this, it fits!
