I wonder if the other founding members of AAWA ever met personally Cedars - beyond perhaps telephone calls and emails.

funny.
i had an interesting discussion this morning with an older guy in our little town.
so the stocker in the market is very outgoing and friendly to everyone.
I believe that Russell himself wasn't a freemason, but had good connections - possibly family connections - into that community and used them to advance the interests on the Bible Students.

The issues with people being unwillingly added to Facebook groups isn't new ... see this blog entry - it contains a glaring example of this:

This is where the "business model" approach to the AAWA became the problem.
Facebook is today's more powerful tool to promote an idea or a product and build a "community". Because of the "business-like" approach to structuring the AAWA, they turned to Facebook as the obvious media of choice to propagate their message and build a community as quickly as possible, because that's what Facebook is good at. So far so good. This is business reasoning.
However, Facebook sucks big time when it comes to protecting the privacy of its user base. And here lies the core of this issue. When weighing the need for rapid growth / building momentum versus the need to carefully protect the identity of the people they wanted to help, the business-like values weighted more than the value of human rights.
Now, we all make mistakes and make bad calls. Choosing the Facebook route was a bad call in this particular situation. But it could have been fixed. What is unforgivable is to not correct the situation when the very first reports came out that something was wrong and people were getting exposed and life-wrecking consequences were being produced because people were being outed as a result of the way Facebook operates. At this point it became clear that the value of NUMBERS and EGOS outweighted the value of the human lives that were in jeopardy. In brief, this is what's wrong. And apparently, continues to stay wrong.
It's a pitty, but unfortunately, not a surprise.

It's unbelievable what this "Julia Barrick Douglas" just did to "Besty" by exposing his real name and photo to a public audience.
Shame on you, Julia. Shame on you.
You're a terrible liability to the group you so ardently wish to contribute. Again, shame on you.
What a royal mess.
Also, a word to everyone: The ends don't justify the means. No matter what your personal issues with others are, DO NOT compromise ANYONE'S personal privacy by publicly revealing their names, photos, addresses, phone numbers or email addresses. Never, ever, not even for a minute. For the love of God, THINK before you act.

bohm,
Do you have an idea how many times information is "slipped on" to Elders anonymously ? A printed screenshot of a Facebook page slipped into an evelope, that is left quietly on the postbox of an Elder. It doesn't have to be an Elder lurking. All it takes is a vindictive coward.
And yes, of course, to reveal the geographical location of a poster is just as serious. Especially if that country is a small country with only a few congregations, where basically every JW knows every other JW.

The problem is that within the bulk of people that got dragged into the group (the 1300), more than likely there are WT apologists who are now able to see the Facebook pages of the faders and active Witnesses and take screen shots of their FB pages where their affiliation with the so called "secret" AAWA group is shown. How difficult is it to see the potential danger in this?

Cedars ...
This particular sentence you wrote:
"...this use of profanity demonstrates precisely the reason why I cannot engage with you or anyone else on this forum."
You may have your issues with Simon, but to put everyone else in this forum (some of them who are actually sympathetic towards AAWA) under that unfair and insulting blanket remark really is very telling. I'm really sorry to say this, because I would like to keep you in my good esteem. But honestly, the way you're handling things just isn't right. Stop and think. You're creating a Public Relations nightmare.
JUST CLOSE THAT DAMN FACEBOOK GROUP, EJECT EVERYONE, CREATE A NEW ONE AND LET THE TRUE VOLUNTEERS JOIN IN AGAIN OF THEIR OWN FREE INITIATIVE.

Cedars,
As it's easy to understand, it wasn't needed that his brother was a member. All it took was that SOMEONE noticed (feel free to debate how come that third person knew, it could also come as an anonymous tip), took a SCREEN SHOT of SST's Facebook with the link to the AAWA group, and tipped his brother. Voila. How difficult is to screw someone?

Rebel8, as much as a sympathize with what happened to you, that statement is an overgeneralization about a supposed acquired behavior by the Witnesses. I know all sorts of people who exhibit that sort of behavior and never had anything to do with the Witnesses. More likely it has to do with education - or lack thereof.
