I think his legal case will fail because he's asking the court to deal with crimes that are outside of its jurisdiction. And I think he knows that, but decided to put on an act so that he could continue to threaten and bully people, as well as use the case to distract from his personal failings.

c'mon, imagining you could fight a gorilla, lion, elephant, or bear with your bare hands?!?.
this could be an amazing new reality tv show though ... "ok, bubba, you've just beaten a dog ... now for $16,000 do you want to fight a chimpanzee?

Andy Warhol mentioned that one day, every person would have his/her 15 minutes of fame. But such things are not dependent on a sanity or intelligence check. So we've grown into a world where we can easily access endless examples of our worst moments.
We can also find examples of our best moments, but no one slows down to watch when a person is driving safely, after all.

Debra: is he so stupid as to think he was going to get a great influx of sympathy?
He's a classic bully, so when he faces a situation where he can't just aggressively beat someone down, he plays the "woe is me" card to get sympathy and complains that others are bullying him. You've probably read about the countless times when he bullied people, and you can see him gripe about being bullied constantly since this all happened.
I'm not sure if he thought it would work, as much as he was so angry and upset that he could only think about trying to vindicate himself by snapping back at Kim as quickly and harshly as he could.

Ecclesiastes 12:12,13

every year at a convention, new books brought out.

We didn't see it because the WTS kept us busy reading and underlining and preaching and going to meetings... the idea is for the rank and file to never have enough time to stop and think and to ask questions. Plus, they hammer home the idea that the GB must be obeyed at all cost because they are the conduit to God via His Holy Spirit. To question them is to put your eternal reward in peril.
The one thing that all of those factors have in common? Pressure. They keep pressure on you, so that you are either too tired, too busy, or too scared to do anything but go along with it. That's why it can feel so oppressive to be a JW, and why it can feel so incredibly liberating to get away.

He broke down when he was reading one of his messages implying that he was feeling suicidal. When he began to talk about his family, the tears stopped and he quickly regained his composure. That's why I think the emotion was real-- he was feeling pain and sorrow for himself. When it came time to acknowledge his family, his emotions dried up and he got back on track.
You will notice how frequently he uses his family as a club to attack his critics with. How many times has he tried to make the point that his detractors are not concerned about his family? His wife and children are useful insofar as he can use them to pretend to be a caring family man and insofar as he can use them to distract his critics. But I don't think he really cares about them, certainly not as much as he cares about himself.

Well, I'd definitely want to watch the unedited video of someone battling an elephant, lion, or grizzly bear.

Exactly. He wants to focus on whether it's really that bad that he 'spent some time with sex workers.' Most people think it's awful that he cheated on his spouse and can't seem to bring himself to even appear to be remorseful.

That has been the view of the WTS for decades now. If you are not a JW, they encourage you to question your religious leaders and beliefs because the truth will always shine through. If you are a JW, they strongly discourage questioning anything or trying study on your own, because truth only belongs to the GB. Many of their statements about searching for truth are contradictory like that. Question everything until you become a JW, then question nothing... or else.

Simon: It's still staggering that someone who relied on his online reputation for 100% of his income had so little regard for it
I think it's a lack of self-awareness. He really isn't capable of seeing things from the point of view of someone outside of his situation. His hard-charging, take-no-prisoners style of operating can work over a short period of time, and it did for him. He grew his channel and protected it by going after anyone who criticized him, and he was relentless. And he also alienated people who were on his side because he demands unconditional support. So, when he finally stumbled badly, he lacked a support network- the people who could have helped him were on the other side of all of those burned bridges.
Even now, he won't give an inch and continues to turn on people who supported him. You have to wonder how many of the ones that are left -the real diehard supporters- will end up in his doghouse because they couldn't keep navigating the minefield that is his massive and fragile ego.
