I'm not trying to be argumentative, but did you re-read this section of your post?:

American nationalism stands out from the normal love of country that many have around the world. It seems to almost be a religion indoctrinated from childhood that they are better than the rest of the world.
To me this indoctrination seems to have come from everywhere and is like propaganda. Their role in the world and throughout history has been exagerated. Their knowlege of other cultures is weak.
Nationalism is a tool governments use to control the people. It causes people to do the government's bidding, making decisions based more on emotion than rational thought. What better way to get mother's to give up their sons to go to war?

You say America is not this way, yet your description fits America perfectly. Americans are taught that they are better than people elsewhere, by means of propaganda, their role in the world is exaggerated, their knowledge of other cultures is weak, we are emotionally controlled through nationalism into doing the government's bidding, making decisions based more on emotion than rational thought, so as to cheer when our sons go off to the war on terror.

Seriously, this fits America perfectly.

Does Looks Really Matter?

would you go out with someone who was not physically attractive if he/she had a big heart on the inside, a great personality, lot's of things in common with, etc...i guess i'm asking what's more important to you the person on the exterior or who he/she really is underneath?.

Don't want to sound shallow, but looks do matter to me, a guy might have a great personality, be kind, warm, and gentle, but if I'm gonna wake up next to him, I'm gonna like what I see...Guys are just the same, they want big breasts, nice ass, a pretty face, and any guy who says not is a liar.

I don't want big breasts in a woman. I'll accept her anyway, but that would be one strike against her.

How nice it is when you get the whole package, looks and personality. But if I have to choose, I take personality every time. When you wake up next to her, you don't see her less-than-perfect looks, you see the person you love.

I wish I could think of some, but so far I haven't. Still working on it, but it's a real puzzle. When the power brokers control the propaganda, how do you get the message out without being marginalized and labeled a crank or a kook?

I do know that on a one-to-one basis you can help them see the reality of the situation. Once seen, a person never forgets. A grassroots effort of this nature might eventually help. But even here, the conundrum is that if anyone gets successful enough to cause a problem, the power brokers buy them off. The Sierra Club, for instance, the environmental cause, got infiltrated by the PR industry so as to defang their accusations against industry. We've seen how medical watchdogs get bought off by the pharmaceutical industry.

So the condundrum is: how do you find a way that is effective enough to bring about real change, while realizing that any group sufficiently effective will automatically become the target of those in power who wish to remain there? I haven't figured this one out yet.

Self Esteem

now i have seen people write about the fact that they have low self esteem, as an xjw.

What you say is true. Alas, were it so simple!

Yes, self-esteem problems stem from childhood. The really serious ones do, anyway. An adult becoming a JW could develop self-esteem issues, but the really deep feelings come from childhood. And though it can help to be aware of the sources of this trauma, and telling yourself a mantra about your self worth can help, those who suffer deeply from this issue need therapy.

The subsconsious mind works on us so thoroughly and so deceptively, we hardly realize why we act the way we do.

in a certain circuit, all elders are jerks.. 1/2 of all the ministerial servants are also jerks.. 1/2 of all the jerks in that circuit are elders.. there are 40 elders are 46 ministerial servants.. no elder is a ministerial servant.. 1/2 of the number of jerks who are not elders or ministerial servants are pedophiles.. how many pedophiles are there in that circuit?.

Indeed, Scully, I did think of that, and that is possibly what Farkel had in mind even though the definitions of 'jerk' and 'pedophile' do not dovetail perfectly, though one is a subset of the other. But that still leaves out all the ordinary publisher pedophiles, so 8.5 is probably incorrect.

People are keying on that sentence and answering 8 1/2. But the question was not how many people are covered by that sentence, but:

How many Pedophiles are there in that Circuit?

Cannot tell from the data provided. The sentence above covers part of the pedophile population. Then you have to add the unknown number of pedophile publishers. And the unknown number of Non-Jerk elders and M.S. who are pedophiles.

Just like in real life Watchtower-land, the actual number of pedophiles is unknown but substantial.

Yes, I think the best tool against these trends is education. PR machines cannot work in the open. Politicians cannot do dirty deals in the open. This Enron thing won't amount to much in the long run, for it is millionaires trying other millioinaires, but at least the general public has been that much informed about the way things get done in the higher reaches of corporations and the government.

The more people know what's really happening, and that means getting information beyond the U.S. media machine, the more they will be disgusted and the closer we will get to actual, meaningful reform.

As for foreign policy issues, military concerns, etc.. we have a government that we pay our hard earned money to everyday to handle that. With all it's checks and balances, we have a better chance of finding out about who's fuckin up better than anyone else in the world. More often than not the ones who fuck up are found out and thrown out.

Sadly not. Read about the public relations industry, and how they hide facts from the American public about how their government operates. How they tell lies about what is happening. And how almost every politician in Washington is beholden to this PR machine and the corporations that paid for them.

The American system of checks and balances has been thrown out of whack by this machine. The president and the congress are both beholden to these special interests. Just to give a recent example, where are the checks and balances when it came to this administration's energy policy? Congress is screaming for details in order to appease the public into thinking they are doing their job. The president refuses to divulge anything. Meanwhile, who wrote this policy? Companies like Enron. The only checks and balances we will soon have are the ones at the cash register.

The ideals of America no longer resemble the reality. We teach our children in school about America the way it was founded. It's no longer the case, more often than not.
