Experimenting With New Ideas since leaving the WT
by lovelylil ini have always been intrigued about why we dream and recently signed up for a course on dream interpretation.
the course includes a great book written by sigmund freud.. this would have been oh soo taboo if i was still in the borg.
probably would have been df'd for it.. was wondering how many others out there have studied a subject or experimented with new ideas that "mother" would not have approved of since leaving the org, and what you learned from it?

Ho Lovelylil, I have done Buddhist meditation classes at a local library - very relaxing. I felt so physically relaxed afterward I could hardly move.
Also I tried a workshop in transpersonal psychology which is based on Jungian principles and is a way to contact your unconscious mind and heal yourself. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for this topic, very interesting.

Birthdays & Christmas
by Rattigan350 inwhat is the deal with people criticizing jws because they don't celebrate birthdays or christmas?.
it is as if when someone is born, from a baby, to a child, teen, adult; that one has a responsiblity to celebrate christmas (and i thought it was a free country); and others have a responsiblity to celebrate others' anniversary of one's birth.. i don't get the criticisms as if celebrating either is a great thing and the not celebrating is a bad thing.. data on star trek said that he does not understand why people celebrate their birthdays - a day one can not possibly remember.. what are you actually celebrating?
the fact that you made it another year?
-

Rattigan on an episode of Voyager the other day Tuvok was desperately trying to fight being assimilated by the Borg. He was using his date and place of birth to remember who he was. Our birthday is such a personal thing, it makes us an individual. We can either celebrate it or not we are free to decide.
It is when someone tells us that we are forbidden from celebrating our own bith and we accept it without question that we have truly been assimilated.
I suggest you fight it.

The Great Destroyer
by talesin inis our species so disrespectful of others ???

Hi Tal
Totally understand the way you feel. I joined the WWF campaign to save the tiger last year - only 3,200 left in the wild. I did it because I have a terrible fear we are going to lose the tiger forever if we don't act now.
To think it is being slaughtered to be chopped up for useless traditional medicine
WWF are working to create a reserve on the Russian and Chinese border where tigers can be protected and they can't harm humans or farm animals either.
We have to try!

The final and most important question concerning the Watchtower Corporation ???
by Finkelstein inthe final and most important question ... were the wts.
doctrines specifically created to attract the.
attention to the organization's printed literature and to proliferate that literature to its fullest possible.
-
Xanthippe
Does the fact that all the WTS. proclamations never claim true and the organization's past doctrines are readily available to see
on places like the inter-net, a probable cause for the organization directly down sizing its operations. - Finkelstein
Finkelstein, what if the whole religion is based on a series of memes? The first one being that we are in the time of the end. That evolving into the good news has to be preached. Then the dates, continually changing as noo lite came in and as you say above as all of their mistakes are now online for the whole world to see it is evolving into sizing down the operation.
Not that there hasn't been conscious and cynical manipulation of doctrines along the way to make the religion stand out from the rest such as the blood doctrine and banning of all 'pagan' holidays. Not that there hasn't been corruption and evil scheming to take peoples' money and literature flogging time. Of course there has. I was one of the young pioneers who became cannon fodder for the borg.
I have seen similar themes in other authoritarian regimes eg communist states where many truly still believe in the principles and yet some take advantage and become corrupt, skimming off wealth for themselves.
It sometimes has seemed like they believe the nonsense, even at GB level, because the memes began so long ago they have evolved and taken on a life of their own. Of course over several generations it is hard to keep track of how ideas developed.
'Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate and respond to selective pressures'. -Wikipedia on 'Meme'

As a JW, how did you feel about shunning?
by jwfacts ini am interested in the answers for a new poll.
also, feel free to suggest other options, wording etc.agreed in full with the watchtower guidelinesagreed with shunning in general, but not for familywas stumbled by this practice but shunned as instructeddid not agree with the practice and secretly associated with disfellowshipped people .
for me personally, i did not agree with the practice and secretly associated with disfellowshipped people, even whilst at bethel.

I think I agreed with shunning in general, but not for family.
Years ago when my pioneer partner talked about a family she knew where the son had been disfellowshipped, she said his mother told him 'you are dead to me now'.
I was very shocked and asked her how a mother could say that to her own child.
She said, but the son had turned his back on Jehovah. Unnatural people, who don't seem to love their own families.

Sex and drugs in university
by Xanthippe inso this jw friend that got in touch out of the blue a few months ago after 24 years of shunning us agrees that the borg is not keen on university.
it is so difficult to keep to your principles because of all the immorality there according to her.
yes same old story we have been hearing for years.. if that is the case they should be fine with distance learning.

Wow a lot of strong feelings here. Thanks for your replies. I really just want to know what to say to this friend.
I have no idea what JWs are saying about distance learning, not being at the KH any more.
I know they just want to keep everybody as stupid as possible and out their flogging literature. They don't want people getting educated and asking awkward questions.
I just wanted to carry the conversation on a bit further with her. My daughter's getting ready to go to university, that's why it came up in our letters.

If that is the case they should be fine with distance learning. I think I read on here someone in the US advising a person to do online distance learning for a degree and in the UK we have the Open University.
So how are these vieved ? What is their excuse about not learning with these higher education facilities?
