A rare example of where the magazines have presented a direct rebuttal of an evolutionary scientific argument.
it is often said that our retinas are are an example of sub-optimal design.. a few years ago i was intrigued by a passing comment in one of nick lane's to the effect that this is not a good argument but he didn't go into much detail.. researchers at leipzig have revealed the role of glial cells in transmitting light from the surface of the retina to the cones, acting like fiber-optic cables.. erex ribak has built a model of the eye and demonstrated some fascinating details.... so, the question is - does this reflect good "design" or a retro-fitted repair like the hubble telescope's glasses?.

A rare example of where the magazines have presented a direct rebuttal of an evolutionary scientific argument.
years ago, the insinuation was often presented, that those who were inactive were actually not witnesses at all.
the point being made was that ''...winesses is a verb, not a noun...''.
i know there were published assertions to this end in the older books and magazines, with possibly even quotes from the likes of rutherford or knorr ,.
I get your point goneforgone but as far as the JW machine is concerned they don't care.
If someone fades to avoid DA/DF they are still seen as fair game if they ever get back on the radar, either as someone who needs to be DF'ed cos the elders can't stand someone playing the system, or as a lost sheep who could be reactivated. Anyone who remains in a locale and is well known by the congregation who does things that would normally require a JC to be formed stands a good chance of being hounded at some point.
If their argument is that they have a right to religious freedom and just want to leave then the JW line is clear - just disassociate yourself. No one is stopping you. Everyone knows that the only way of minimising the social consequences is to fade. Even then it's not certain how individuals will react.
The desire to judge is strong. The fear of those who have left is even greater.
I don't see anyone is going to buy some human rights argument since there is no one stopping anyone from just stopping coming or formally saying they are stopping. Even arguing about the social and family consequences has little traction from a human rights perspective it would appear.

Inactive ones are still officially considered Witnesses and if they start attending once again they can be held to account for things done whilst inactive.
Of course there are various shades of grey as to how individuals are treated either by their families or the wider congregation.
Trying to argue that something an inactive person does not matter as they are not known as a Witness holds little water as the elders will claim they are still baptised, not DF/DA and would face a JC if they were attending.
following on from the recent thread about wt losing an appeal concerning the uk charity commission (sorry, i can't do the link) i'm pleased to report that this matter is covered in the latest 'private eye' (20 march - 2 april issue).. it's a one-third page article (p.34) under the heading 'child abuse' and the headline 'silent witnesses'.
it reports the case accurately, mentions several criminal cases and the ongoing high court compensation case.
it includes some of judge mckenna's comments..
Top marks Joe!

nothing there that cannot be found out. PM me for anything you don't know.
i brought this up in a conversation after today's meeting.
the elder knowingly acknowledged the growing number and pointed out that of course, now we understand why this is so.
i gave my best blank stare and said "we do?
He clearly forgot about the doctrine change that removed the barrier for sealing from 1935.

and this is a quote from a recent post...
After reading what witnesses declared during the trial, I have serious doubts about Candace Conti's honesty. I think this girl left the Truth, led a dissolute life, and when she found Kendrick's name in a sex offenders registry plotted a way to obtain a huge amount of money. She got in touch with apostate organizations that directed her to that lawyer, and the rest you know already. I'm very afraid that this whole story is all about the benjamins, and since most people around her are apostates, they are taking advantage of the situation to further their agenda.

over the past couple of weeks, i've discovered the 'alternative rock group' radiohead.
of course, i've known of their name for years and years but never, until recently, bothered to check out their music.
i'm also quite a big fan of damon albarn and admire him not only for his substantial musical output but also for the different 'feel' to his songs - oasis, in contrast, seem to have just one beatles-esque style.
Yes - brilliant, brilliant band.
Don't write off Oasis. Noel Gallagher is a master songwriter. I know they have a pretty basic style but they were a really great band.
If you are going to get into the Blur v Oasis argument then just pick the winner. Pulp.

There is alot of talk about how Conti is just driven by greed to pursue the WTS and not Kendrick. How she is following an apostate agenda. How her story is not backed up by her parents or anyone else in the congregation. How Lett has warned against being influenced by these apostate backed lies.
There are some sympathisers but going anywhere near suggesting that Conti is entitled to pursue her case is prompting accusations of supporting apostates. You have to tread very carefully on there...
