Dr Applewhite and Child Abuse
by snare&racket ini am shocked that an expert would simply examine only the literature given to her by the organisation she was defending and simply accept it.
also the ease she has in making huge sweeping statements when comparing the jw's to all other international religious organisations simply undermines her professionalism.. i am also thoroughly shocked at her blatant, 'expert for hire', 'will defend anyone' apparent decision making, the organisation is responsible for covering up thousands of abuse victims by its own records, in australia alone!
never mind their judicial process being heartless and traumatic!.

Dr. Applewhite is no idiot and has significant credentials when it comes to working organisations and examining their child abuse policies.
http://www.parkdietzassociates.com/spotlight-on-pda-expert-monica-applewhite-ph-d/
I would bet money that her engagement with the WTS has not been to do a detailed analysis of policy and procedure but simply to provide another opinion that various cases of child abuse could not reasonably have been expected to be the fault of the organisation.
Regardless, it was clear from her evidence that she had not done a detailed and objective analysis of the WT policy on handling child abuse. She clearly had not investigated lots of cases and critically examined the "root causes". She clearly has not provided the WTS with a detailed report on problems that have occurred and what must be done to improve the situation, as she has done on other circumstances.
She has been shown numerous articles and publications that raise the awareness of the issue. Kudos to the WTS - some of these go back a fair while. She has been spun a yarn about how seriously the WTS takes this.
I bet you any money she offered the WTS a proper consultative process and the WTS turned her down knowing they would need to change. I bet you any money they basically gave her a wad of cash and as little info as possible and said "tell us what you think" knowing she would say "well this is all good stuff".
She's taken the money and not done her homework, probably because she was never engaged to do her homework and would never have been given the access she needed to do a proper job.
She's been sold a lemon but I expect if she really knew what she was walking into she would not have taken the job. She took the money without considering she might actually be asked some difficult questions. She believed the story she was told and did not ask questions because it was easy money.
I still don't think there is a deeper conspiracy here to deliberately put an "expert" witness up on the stand knowing they are going to fail. What purpose does that serve?
I also don't see what it has to do with the WTS not taking a qualified lawyer into Bethel because she is a woman. I don't doubt it, just can't see the relevance to Dr. Applewhite.

Sorry Sabin but I don't agree. They simply found the most supposedly qualified "expert" that was prepared to support their junk. Being a non Witness was important but clearly not as much as being able to say anything they needed in return for money. -

It's quite simple Sabin. No rat here. The WTS found the only person with the paper credentials prepared to be a hired gun for them. When push came to shove she had to revert to self preservation. The only reason that has not happened so far in this process is because all the others have been Elders who have had to stick to defending their masters. -

Do you feel vindicated by the exposure of the WT Society in Australia? It seems like a feeding frenzy on here! I love it. You?
by Wasanelder Once inare you pleased with the exposure of the society in australia?
do you feel personally vindicated by it?
do you think it gives you credibility with others now that all the things you said were going on, actually are documented?

Why didn't any of the elders in that case (Dino Ali, Joe Bello, Max Horley) go to the police?
Because, by his own admission, Dino Ali would not even report a murder. He'd call Bethel.

I know exactly what you are saying d4g. I think the real indicator will be how the heavyweights handle things next week. The elders so far are chaff as far as the GB are concerned, they have far more astute and capable people coming up.
I agree that plan A is do nothing. I stilll think the intensity of the investigation and its potential outcome might have caught the GB with their pants down (so to speak) and they might need a plan B just in case.

Hate to disagree with such esteemed posters but I don't think the the hubris of the current GB extends to them playing the GT card. Cross that bridge and you cannot come back from it.

The WTS has to stand on their old, outdated judical law. If they started to dismantle the "two witness rule" and those archaic laws they follow,
Yes they do however they could find a strategy that would keep this in play but allow them to be seen to improving the policy. If they (a) always report and (b) delay judicial action until the authorities have investigated then they put the ball in the secular court and can then act in response to whatever the authorities do.
I really do think the GB have underestimated the impact of this and I am sure they are rapidly working out if they need to do something more proactive than simply sit put and do nothing whilst it blows over.

@nitty_gritty
You are right that the RC is looking at many institutions. You are also correct that the many organisations have failed child abuse victims in the past. The question is, what has changed?
The answer is very little of substance. Other organisations have implemented significant changes in their child protection policies but the GB has done bugger all. Jehovah's Witnesses do not even have a PUBLIC and TRANSPARENT policy. It's all hidden in the Shepherd the Flock book and letters to BoEs. If you are a victim you simply have to go along with however the elders deal with it, without any ability to refer to and understand the process.
So when you say....
I have no doubts though that whatever the Australian Commission decides in the way of policies, recommendations and practices to protect children, Jehovah’s Witnesses will be more than happy to comply with them
...you are talking bollocks.
The GB has had years to apply best practice. It has had years to make meaningful change.
How many times have you heard how far ahead of worldly laws the organisation is? How many times have you heard how far the organisation goes to exceed the requirements for building regulations, health and safety, working practices ad so on? The hierarchy walks around with a massive chubby on boasting about how far ahead the organisation is all the fecking time.
Yet on this matter they are so woefully and shamelessly behind the curve they cannot even see the other side of the corner. They refuse to push forward as they don't think they need to. They make no concessions, give no quarter lest they unleash a barrage of liability suits.
As recently as the past few weeks we have seen spin from the top making out the WTS has the best child protection policy in the world and demonising critics as apostates and liars. They even dug up some video that NO ONE has ever seen as if that proves they have are the world leaders in child protection.
There is only one reason the WTS will change in response to this Commission. I'll let you guess what that is.
