Kind of makes one wonder if people like Russell started off with good motives but then just became to full of themselves.

Silent Lambs/Bill Bowen..Who rejoices now?
by wasasister inhaving read the exchanges between rev, bill bowen, and others involved in the silent lambs website, i honestly feel sickened.
i remember when i first started to hear rumblings that "something big" was going down regarding the society's handling of child abuse.
i was overjoyed because i had first-hand knowledge of several atrocities in this regard and was hoping against all odds that a major upset would force them to change their policies.

History doomed to repeat itself...
by Reborn2002 inanother fine example of the violation of civil liberties perpetrated by the bush administration / ashcroft-led justice department under the guise of fighting "terror.
is this not "terror" in itself?
at what point is it acceptable for the american people to allow such actions to be committed against fellow american citizens simply because these people are of arab descent?

Now, my suggestions lead to a world where our children's children have more of a chance.
The other fantasizing will as sure as eggs is eggs lead to a world where recruiting new terrorists gets easier and easier. With consequences that are obvious. Nukes in major cities.
It is the ones who spout "These people are not our friends." who - without realizing it, I know - enable and make easier the task of recruiting suicide bombers and the like.
T H I N K .
Put your violent fantasies aside. They don't impress. They simply RECRUIT.
Focus you bring up some valid points. I have to wonder if more resources were spent building up these countries and we had policies that encouraged them to prosper, would we be in a differnt situation. However, we have to keep in mind that many of these people aren't poor, desolate, individuals who have no hope for a better future. If the 9/11 terrorists were Palestinians, I'd think to myself "hmm....maybe" but these were Saudis. A country that the US has supported and defended. With this in mind, is there any hope to reason with these individuals? I don't think so. I truly believe that, like the Nazis in Germany, there is only one thing these people (terrorists not Muslims, just like Nazis, not Germans) understand and that is supeerior forces. Until they believe Allah is not with them, these attacks will continue. If we get sucked into this "oh, look, we have achieved peace with them" (ala Neville Chamberlain) we'll we viewed as weak and will continue to be attacked.

Many Americans voted in the last presidential election. The US supreme court interfered with state's rights and basically said that many of those votes don't count. Why vote if your vote will be disregarded?
I never thought that I would live long enough to see the sort of shenanigans that I have seen the past couple of years in my beloved country.
Robdar,
Everyone's vote did count. Unfortunately, we have an electorial college. I would gladly give it up, even at the expense of having Gore in office. Regarding shenanigans, it's been going on a LONG time. For example, who really won the 1960 Kennedy vs. Nixon election? It was extremely close and it's commonly known that Kennedy stole the election by having the mayor of Chicago (Daley) fabricate thousands of fake votes (thus Kennedy won Illinois and the presidential election). Like they say in Chicago "vote early, vote often."
Speaking of votes not counting, here in Chicago voting for anyone besides "the machine" (Democratic) canidate is a "wasted" vote. So it goes both ways, both parties do it. At least with the Bush vs. Gore election in FL. it was investigated. Heck, look at what just happened AGAIN in the same counties in FL. Again, they messed up with their voting process and this time it was a primary election!

the soviet union was still in tact many soviet russians who visited the USA would tell me that we had more of a police state than they
I mean no disrespect but this has to be one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard. One small example, what would happen if I were to go to the Kremlin and organize a protest? I believe I'd soon find myself in the loving company of the KGB. The very fact that people are able to ptotest what's being done to these Arabs in evidence against your point.
Don't you believe that the next terrorist attack will probably be worse then the last? Again, I ask to those who are complaining, how would YOU suggest we uncover these terrorist cells before the next attack? Do you want to be anywhere near a big city when they set off a nuke? Do you want to live down wind of a chemical plant when they explode it? Heck, they don't even need to sneak people in. Here in Chicago on the local news they did a special on local Islamic schools and the hate they preach against America. Text books for kids showing how evil America is. Sheesh, what's the deal with that? Freedom of speech allows this (as well it should) but is there anything wrong with keeping a close eye on these people? Regarding this and the "racist" card that many are playing, keep in mind that the government clamp down hard on militia groups (which were/are typically white males) after the Oklahoma bombing took place. These militia groups are no longer a threat to US security as they once were.
One more point while I'm on my soapbox. While every Tom, Dick and Harry complains about the government, how many bother to vote? Everyone's bitching about this or that but 70% of Americans can't even get off of their lazy asses and vote.

Excellent post Neon. One wonders what the world would be like today if we had some of todays leaders back in WWII.

Why are those of Hispanic, Irish, Japanese, African, and every other ethnicity who decide to move to America not treated this way on such a wide scale? Immigrants from those countries who agree to comply and go register and are then thrown in detainment? Hasn't happened. Want to explain that one? I didn't think so.
I haven't read enough information on this yet but there is one HUGE difference to keep in mind. Here in America, even right here in Chicago, there are Muslim schools and organizations that are anti-American. While you might not find a class where young Muslims are taught to fly planes into high rise buildings you will find school books with anti-American rhetoric. With other ethinic groups I haven't seen such anti-American sentiment.
Also, keep a couple of other things in mind. One, the hijackers of 9/11 came here through legal means. It's likely that others are here via the same means. Two, we're at war. During WWII Japanese Americans (who were American citizens) were placed in camps. I believe here we're talking about non-American citizens.
It's always easy to point out the flaws. How would you suggest the FBI and other law-efforcement agencies uncover these terrorist cells before they strike? Even with 20/20 hidesight, how would you have caught the 9/11 terrorist while keeping their civil liberties untouched?

Letter From Bill Bowen
by Lin inthis message was originally sent out by bill bowen on the silentlambs mailing list: .

It is a shame that he is quick to smear and label people (making sure everyone reads it) without getting all the facts straight first. This happened over Ray Franz and now seems to have happened again with RevMalk.
Why are people so quick to take offense? What's so hard about picking up the phone, calling the person and finding out what's going on?
BTW, cut Simon some slack. His house, his rules.

What Double Standards Do JW's Practice?
by minimus inone double standard that always got to me was how a body of elders would talk about how a brother needed to "qualify" for some privilege by being a good example for weekend service and yet a number of elders would hardly ever go out in field service at all!
or how they would use 2 hours to literally gossip about everyone in the congregation, and then give a local needs talk on the need of not talking about the brothers and minding our own business.........what double standards got to you?

I know how they do it!
by spec in.
alright it has only taken me 25 years but i have worked out how they get you to believe.. in all the publications they always present both sides of the story in a logical and often scientific way.
this makes you feel that you don't have to research further because you already know the other side.. the truth is they don't have the truth.

I recall a few years back arguing with my then wife about the freedom to examine other religions and how we as JWs don't have that choice (without being df'd). She said "sure we do, what do you think the Mankind's Search for Truth book is all about?"
Oy!

Is Warning re Possible Lawsuit Required?
by Scully inthis is just a general question for anyone who might have some legal background on the matter.. if (and i expect there will be) an announcement is made to our former congregation that we are "disassociated", can i just go ahead and sue them (individual elders in the congregation) for slander and defamation of character?
the decision to make the announcement is one that has to go through the body of elders, right??.
is it necessary, when the elders come calling, to say "i will sue the shirt off your back and the bloomers off your @$$ if you make any announcement that slanders my name or defames my character to anyone"??

Id be really surprised if anyone ever won a lawsuit against an elder for defamation of character over the announcement of a disfellowshipping or disassociation. Because of the threat of lawsuits, the Society instructs the local elders to make the announcement as brief as possible. The usual announcement is simply "So and so is no longer a member of the so & so congregation." If an elder on your committee was stupid enough to speak to someone who wasnt on your JC about the matter before them, then youd have some grounds for a suit.
One possible point that has crossed my mind is suing an elder who owns his own business and refuses to do work for you because your DAd. For example, the PO in the local congregation (who was also the chairman on my committee) owns his own handyman business. Im certain that if I called him to paint my house hed refuse. I wonder if this is against the law, to refuse to do work for someone because of their religious beliefs.
Regarding the Societys lawyers, Im not so sure theyd get involved if you sued an individual elder.
