When I was part of a QB in 1985, everyone was wearing shorts (myself included) and no one ever mentioned a word
The last quick build I was involed with was in 1997. Defintely no shorts were allowed and any t-shirts with "worldly" says was out. Shorts thing was for safety (which made sense) and the t-shirt thing was more of a public / media thing (in case the newspapers came by).
Actually, the biggest "problem" we had (regarding rules being broken) were brothers swearing! lol!

according to your teachings, believers, just so he can stroke himself and show how man has failed.
in fact believers will read this stuff and shrug it off because in the future god will fix it it and it just proves why we need god..

Maybe that should be a private prayer instead of a public one.

I do believe in God but also believe that God isn't all powerful and that Evil is much more powerful then I use to believe. Gives me even an even stronger desire to work against evil in this world instead "waiting on Jehovah" as some people would suggest.
This past Wednesday my son and I were watching the last episode of "Band of Brothers" (which is about the 101 Air Borne division and there battles during WWII). In this episode they stubble across a concentration camp filling with dead and half dead Jews. After the episode was over, my son and I discussed what we just watched. It lead to a very profound discussion on why evil exist and what moral obligation we have to fight it.
Does God exist? I believe so. Is he "all powerful"? I can't believe he is and still allows things like this to happen. But I do believe that he uses people for good as Satan (or whatever you want to call him) uses people for evil.

I have belonged to several congregations that did quick-builds, but no one EVER invited me to participate.
What kind of invitation were you looking for? A few years back another elder and I lead the quick build of the local hall. As far as inviting locals, there was simply an accouncement from the plateform saying "we're going to be doing so & so this weekend, we need as many helpers as we can get." There was a list of "brothers" & "sisters" that the regional committee had which they'd suppliment your labor with people from around the state.
Though being a lot of hard work, I have good memories of building the hall. I'll argee with the comments about using sub-standard help (and it shows!). We had one or two people who actually knew masonary but we used 20 people who "learned as they went." The brickwork looks like a group of high school kids did it. Added to the fact that there aren't any windows, makes for an below par building. The brother who organized and did the landscaping did an excellent job. He pulled up the looks of the building 100%.
I found that the people who weren't local basically didn't give a rat's ass about the quality of work they were doing. For example, a brother who is a "professional" painted did the staining of the wood work in the Hall. Jeez it turned out like crap! We had to go back and do it all over again. JWs are no differnt then the rest. Most were there just so that they could skip field service.
elswhere recently started a thread about shunning and i noted that at least ninety per cent of the posters to the thread were from the u.s.of a. and canada and they had had some bad experiences with the problem.. why should this be significant ?.
well it seems to me that the shunning problem in america is far worse than here in the u.k. i know of several persons who have been dissed but i am not aware that shunning is a serious issue for them.
can anyone tell me if shunning causes less of a problem here in the u.k. than it does other places in the world, and if so why?.
I don't know specifically about shunning, but it's been my experience that just everything JW is less strict in Europe. For example, watching "R" rated movies here in the states was a definite "no-no". While one wouldn't be df'd, one would loose any privileges in the congregation. While I know European countries have a differnt rating system, seeing these type of movies wasn't a big deal. Years ago when "Braveheart" came out I was speaking with an Irish "brother" and was surprised that he had seen it. He was like "what's the big deal?" I kind of got the same impression about many "rules" that American JW hold strict to, while many European JWs kind of blow off.
one thing i found effective to recover from shunning by the jws, which devastated me, was this truth.
people tend to move in "tribes.

I was talking with Xena the other day and she made a simple, but powerful point. As long as one has JW family, one never really gets over the shunning. So true. Ive been trying now for 2-1/2 years and its still rough. Usually I dont think about them. Nothing mean against them its just like the old saying goes "out of sight, out of mind." But my kids still have contact with my JW family and theyll say something like "Dad, aunt Liza had a baby girl" or "Dad, we were just at uncle Robs new house." Ok, I can deal with and respect their choice not to associate with me but to not even let me know that they had a baby?? Cmon, that goes beyond shunning, thats just downright mean. Yeah, at certain times shunning still hurts but I really dont believe one can completely get over it.

Wow, I guess these two brothers thought that the Sunday talk was really boring.
ok, im sitting here in my office when i hear the outside door open and close.
(btw, a visitor cant go beyond the foyer area because the door leading to the offices is kept locked).
anyway, my secretary is some where on break while the rest of the engineers are busy working (yeah, right).
Give her a ring and find out why she called - She may have doubts or just want the gossip straight from the horses mouth
She always was a boarderline "rebel." A part of me wonders if she wanted to chat but then why would she stop by with someone else in the car? On the other hand, she couldn't stop by my house without being snitched on because a JW family lives next door.
