I believe you can order a video copy of the segment from Dateline. They did give out a toll-free number at the end of the program.

Met Leander Today&Experience w/ family
by Reborn2002 injust thought i would post this experience for the jw.com board.. today was the first time i actually met someone from this website, and oh what an interesting time it was.. seeing as in how leander and i live only a matter of minutes from one another, after talking on the phone for several weeks, we finally arranged to meet.. leander's personal experience leading him to write a formal letter to his local congregation last week has sparked a flurry of events for him in recent days, and i felt obligated as a person to try and support him through his process.. possessing a vast library of wtbts literature dating back well over 50 years, i was able to show him in person the contradictions so readily apparent within their articles, and demonstrate how time and again the jw-sect have wavered back and forth, hither and thither on doctrine allegedly inspired by the very hand of god.. it was a very fruitful experience, but this is where it gets interesting.. trying to determine an acceptable place to sit down and go over the documents.. his place was rendered impossible because his hardcore, loyal jw wife and her family were at his home.
being a saturday, the library was closed, and with a literal totebox full of books (well over 40lbs) and brochures, anywhere else public such as a bar or bookstore (can you imagine walking in with a totebox of books?
) was not logical.

Hey, if you want, just me an e-mail sometime. I think I'm just southwest of you guys. I'm about 20 west of Naperville.
I know EXACTLY what Leander is going through, since I had just about the same situation a couple of years back. I didn't have anyone to bounce my thoughts off of so I know how nice it would be to have someone to talk with.
Well, consider it an open invitation. -

Favourite Governing Body memeber?
by the follower ini have noticed that there is a tendency in this group to speak injuriously of glorious ones.
in an attempt to help us be more "balanced" in this regard i invite all to share which governing body members they like.
who is your favourite governing body member?

Musto,
Yeah, but the bros. that I dealt with on the regional committee were/are jerks. Couldn't care less about the quality of the purchased items, just as long as it was the cheapest. Perhaps not jerks but definately single minded.
But the local bro. & sis. who put together the interior color schemes did a great job.
Rule number one when building a KH, use as many local people to do the work as possible. The end result will tell you why. :)
Oh, and rule number two, people can't learn brick laying on-the-job. The walls on the KH were about as even as the Grand Canyon. -

Musto,
When I was involved with the local building project, I thought that the packaged plan ideas for decorating was a good idea along with a standardizing the KH building plans.

Thanks Reborn. After reading your exp. you know where I'm coming from. When one receives that kind of treatment it hurts at first but later it changes to pity. I can't believe that I use to have the same mind set as these people. I really can't.

Kind of reminds me of what happened to me soon after I was DA’d a couple of years ago. I had just broken my leg and had a cast on it from the tip of my toe to my hip. Here I am at the store, on crutches, struggling to carry two or three bags of groceries. Who happens to walk by? A JW who was my best friend, along with his wife. They look right at me, see me struggling and just walk by. Their heartlessness took even me by surprise. A moment later I heard someone from behind shouting my name and then ask “what the hell are you doing, why didn’t you ask for some help?” It was someone I had known for only a few months. What a help she was! So while my former JW “brother” walked away with his wife, this good Samaritan went out of her way to lend me a hand.
I know that others here have a similar story about the conditional love of the JWs but it’s still something that saddens me every time I think about it. -

Without knowing the whole story (or what this guy did) I think that it takes a lot of heart to help him out after he treated you like crap.

What "hooked" you?
by roybatty inim not sure if this has been discussed before but id be interested to read some comments from those who became jws later in life.
what caught your attention and sucked you in?.
my parents became jws when i was 5 years old, so it was pretty much the only way of life that i knew.

Thanks for the replies. I think my parents (esp. my mother) have the same "classic" story. They immigrated here from Holland and when contacted by the JWs they suddenly had all of these "friends."
Ít's also more then a little ditrurbing that the WT Society knows that they have the best chance to convert people who are having problems and thus target these individuals. I seemed to me that just about every sample demonstration in the KM or the Reasoning Book focused on a negative, one that can only be solved by studying the WT's lit.
Sickening. -

My parents became JWs when I was 5 years old, so it was pretty much the only way of life that I knew. I finally escaped three years ago at age 31. The longer that I’ve been away, the more obvious it becomes that the JW life is a sham. Though I now have the benefit of 20/20 vision, I can’t imagine being an adult and getting involved with this religion. How can someone grow up as a non-JW and then suddenly throw all that away and join some obscure religion? What was the “hook” for you? -

Dateline - reactions the morning after.
by dmouse inwhat happens the morning after dateline?
how will most jws react?
these are my thoughts on the matter, which, of course, are open to debate:.

I agree that what will be most damaging for the WatchTower Society will be the general public’s view of Jehovah’s Witnesses. If you were to ask the average person on the street what they know about JWs, they will most likely say “Aren’t they the ones who don’t celebrate birthdays” or “Yeah, they’re the ones who come on Saturday’s mornings and knock on people’s doors.” But overall people have a positive perception of JWs, at least thinking of them as “clean-cut.”
I believe that this Dateline story and other bad PR will tarnish this image. Even if most JWs don’t see the Dateline piece, people will talking about it. At work, at school, etc. people will ask JWs “did you see that story on Dateline….” people love to put others on the spot, esp. arrogant, self-righteous JWs.
I was also thinking that this case will be a little different then the Catholic problem. The Catholic pedophile problem is a reflection of the Catholic priests, not the average Catholic. However, I believe this will be different with the JWs. Since the WT doesn’t officially have a clergy class and elders are supposedly just “average joes” this problem will be a badge of dishonor that all JWs will have to wear.
It is going to be interesting to see how this issue plays out.
