Jang,
Good article! Many of these traits can be seen in the WT articles, I believe. Thanks!

new light, new light!!
setting: a sister and her householder, as per a #3 talk.. .
the talk: the sister and her householder has a chat about the material for the talk, say on the subject of blood transfusions, prophecy or any other so-called biblical subjects.. in the course of the talk, the householder begins to ask questions, such as:.
Good idea! Then the whole audience could hear a 'fine witness to the truth' and maybe some would be 'set free by the truth!' I bet the school overseer wouldn't catch on enough to stop it in time, either.
But it would take a lot of nerve/courage to do this!

interspersed amidst the text of the five gospels are short cameo essays about topics related to subject matter at hand.
one that caught my eye is called hard sayings softened:.
hard sayings are frequently softened in the process of transmission to adapt them to the conditions of daily living.. luke 6:30a give to everyone who begs from you.
Ginny, good reasoning. Also, that it is for all Christian religions. But since the WTS makes the most noise (for us anyway) they fall under the most scrutiny.
But, it continues to amaze me, how much I didn't think about what we were indoctrinated with. Talk about lack of critical thinking skills!
But that's why they keep people so busy with 5 meetings a week, door-to-door, personal study. When do you have the time to investigate? Plus, no free discussion. Keep these thoughts to yourself.
When first deciding to leave, it was to have guilt-free time to really read up on evolution, history, etc. Then, it was an easy step. Plus, having 'Waiting' let me know about this board. What a help it's been!

even when i was a dyed in the wool jw, there were a few things that never made any sense whatsoever to me.
like most dubs, i glossed over them, here's my top 3 doubts during my period of dubdom, doubts that were never resolved:.
"all scripture is inspired of god and beneficial for teaching".
Expatbrit,
That is a problem I've had (and subdued) before: if God was giving humans a chance for self-rule, it wasn't a very good chance.
My reasoning was that they DIE and are subject to disasters. He was going to rule them in perfection. It wasn't much of a chance since they all had to die in 70-80 years.
Plus, I didn't even think of your equation that Satan would be ruling. So, how would that be man-rule? Some chance!
Plus, they weren't even presented with a fair statement of the proposition. "If you listen to the serpent, HE WILL RULE YOU." It wasn't, as they say in the medical field, informed consent.
Actually, it was a fairy tale.
Hybridous, I enjoyed your post. I had the same problem, but it was with the dinasours. They, by all accounts, predated humans. They were carnivorous. Adam's sin could not have affected them. If there were a God, he created them with no choice but to kill.
The writer of Genesis had no way of knowing about the dinasours. Also, there is a clear contradiction of Gen. 1:30 where it states all creation would be given green vegetation to eat. Imo, this is a fatal flaw of the Bible and reveals the ignorance of dinasours on the writer's part.
Good thread, Englishman!

not as quickly as hippikon, mind you!
or danielle, who would have done it a week - easy!
she did 100 posts in one day!
Wow, congratulations!
I thought it took 500, but I was wrong. I'll be a 'master' soon too!

wtbts arguments against internet correspondence.. .
1. you never know for sure with whom you are communicating.. 2. they may be apostates.. 3. they may lie to you, and you won't be able to tell.. 4. they may be boys pretending to be girls.. 5. they may be porn pushers.. 6. they may be child abusers.. 7. they will waste your preaching time.. 8. there's "nothing quite like" face to face speech.. duck shooting season is upon us friends.
roll up, rollup for the summer quack-attack.
Red flags all over the place when the WTBS opens its mouth. Let's what we shouldn't read:
1. The net.
2. Any news articles that talk about evolution, biology, the age of the earth, blood transfusions, archeology that does not confirm the bible.
3. Any books that seriously consider all of the above.
4. Any school classes that involve #2.
5. Any other religious views (learn them from the WT) or philosophies.
6. Etc., ad nauseum.
That's just off the top of my head.

I was looking for some kind of new philosophy after leaving jws (and, it looks like, the bible). But this is a great concise code of ethics for a while!

i came upon the idea for this topic in backward fashion.. not long ago, someone was attributing greatness to one of us .
because of all that one had done to bring about the end of the .
tower.
Tina, I agree with you that responsibility doesn't rest with the one who studies with anyone. While we may or may not have personally "brought anyone into the truth," the responsibility (except for the persons born into it) of freedom of choice.
It's as Dr. Phil says in his book, it is your responsibility. If we were duped, what should we have done more? What would we do now? We have to own up to our own responsibility for our actions.
Not that one deserves to be duped and the 'duper' is still culpable, but we should have taken actions--as we would do now--to prevent our gullibility.
Then we can have much more power in our lives and not be afraid of it happening again.
Of course, I just feel I fell through the rabbit hole as Alice in wonderland did and couldn't escape for 28 long years!
I don't feel any degree of responsibility rests with the one who studied with me. Nor with any of you. As Ray Franz says "victims of victims."

independent thinking .
a skill we all need .
what is independent thinking?.
JanG,
Thanks for that article--it was very good, imo.
Funny, how the WT articles always used the term 'independent thinking' in such a negative way. Where is THAT in the bible? But it made all of us good little drones and parrots of their teaching, didn't it?
The part on critical thinking is especially helpful for ex-jws. It's really worth developing that skill.
Thanks!
