margaret singer, pioneer in the study of cults, chaired the alberta psychological association (apa) task force on deceptive and indirect methods of persuasion and control (dimpac) from 1983-1987. the final report of this task force was rejected by the apa, and has not been published.
the apa noted that the brief characterized the theory of brainwashing as not scientifically proven and lacking scientific and methodological rigor.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/apa_task_force_on_deceptive_and_indirect_methods_of_persuasion_and_control#reported_conclusions_of_the_dimpac_task_force.
the apa has since dismissed the use of the word "cult" and switched to the term "new religious movements".
Apognophos: since you've no freewill and my sink is full, come over and do my dishes!
If freewill doesn't exist, why bother with democracy?
I believe in freewill, but freewill is not unlimited. We can't control everything about ourselves, but it doesn't mean the choices don't exist in all circumstances.

Good work, TJ.
To define terms, cult means groups that employ 'mind control' or 'undue influence' methods, rather than defining such groups by unique beliefs outside the mainstream. But it is not unbelievable that millions can be influenced, because dictatorships use the same methods of influence to control their population.

I really hate to sound like a paranoid conspiracy nut, but sometimes I do have to wonder how much certain groups like Scientology, the Moonies, or even the Watchtower have infiltrated, co-opted or blackmailed things for their benefit.
i don't recall reaading on here about any.. i just wondered if any actually happened?.
.
oops i misspelled "at" in the title.
I vaguely remember one protest in the early 80's in Hampton, VA. I've never seen a protest in Richmond. I've read of no reports of any for the International in Landover.
The funny thing is, in places there are protests, many of the protestors aren’t even ex-JWs.
question fit for blondie types.. happiness book:.

he is like a criminal who spreads the idea that a crime syndicate does not exist, thus lulling persons into a false security.".
Good point!

I don’t get the need to ‘act professional’, since this is not a professional forum. It is a forum for those affected by the Watchtower religion.
For the record, I don’t see why such emphasis is placed of ‘court cases’. Few of us here are going to court…though some that have child custody issues may need to. Unfortunately, courts and other government institutions, especially in the United States, have a poor track record in handling cults and coming to the aid of its victims. Sometimes they get things right, but I’m not holding my breath. The system is too easily manipulated by those who have the power, money, and influence.
By Xenu’s nuked volcanos, there is something strange about Enzo’s whole discussion that alerts my spidey-sense, I just can’t put my finger on it. Maybe it is the manipulative usage of language. It feels like the trollish way a JW apologist argues, but we are not talking about Watchtower theology or practices, a subject that is steered way clear of.
my question has been answered!
here is a great video answering and explaining why and how it took jesus 5 years of doubting to "inspect", "refine" and "choose" the jw cult as the fds between 1914-1919:.

Witness My Fury: I had that impression as well, but was a little too polite to say it.
The characterization of former members as arrogant, prideful, and so forth is an oft used trope by many cults. I do wonder if this could be an effort by certain cults (like Scientology) to spread disinformation. I'm sure Steven Hassan has stepped on many toes. This is, of course, speculation on my part, which is not backed up by any proof.

I don’t believe Steven Hassan is infallible or the only right answer…I was done with that kind of thinking when I awakened. Sometimes there are no silver bullet answers, especially in reaching out to second and third generation cult members. However, I have found his description of what a cult is, the methods cults use, how indoctrination and undue influence work useful. And the more I hear about other cults, such as Scientology, the more I see uncanny resembles to the one I belong too. Although disparate in teachings, these groups have the same method of operation. Sometimes, the best way to awaken a cult member, is by relating how other high control groups behave.
Much of Steven Hassan’s work is not new, but based on the research of Dr. Robert J. Lifton and others. There is little reason to be so personality-centric, because the focus should be on the causes and effects and solutions to the problems that are faced by many hear. The bottom line is that many are either cut off from their loved ones or operate under that threat. What advice do you have for these folks?
About my ‘problem’ of accepting criticism: I’ve yet to receive real criticism from you, especially since you know nothing about me, so I think the jury is likely out on that.
