to many people, the new year symbolizes hope--a chance to cast away that which has bothered us, and to cultivate all of the things we have dreamt about throughout the year (but never found the energy to do).
i both believe in and love the spirit of the new year, but it is vital for us to remember that the hope we feel now is merely the result of a collective belief in ourselves and in each other.
there is no more opportunity on january 1st than there is on any other day of the year, yet we feel inspired and motivated to change our lives.
Excellent post Orbit!
Hope you have an awesome 2003!!

with all the different religions and beliefs that contradict each other, do you still believe that one of them is the true religion?
the more we try to understand god, the more we are lost.
the more we pray, the more we are deceived.
Little Toe, that is exactly how I feel but sometimes an unable to express.

you know most of us spend a large part of our lives in a religion that allowed for no independant thinking.
we were taught and taught others that ours was the only way and anyone who thought differently was going to be judged unworthy and die.
anyone who presumed to think outside the box was branded "apostate" or not good association.
Great post Xena! I know when I was a dub, it seemed we mocked others for their beliefs, we had a "I am superior" attitude. It seems that attitude carries over to the ex-jw community as well. While I don't see anything wrong with having a laugh at things we observe once in awhile, the hurtful words and attacks aren't justified.

it feels good.
for the first time i was going to have a big part.
then it was time to go to bed and wait for santa.
So, lil bro', what other Christmas memories do you have?
Anyone else want to share theirs?

I used to love it when Uncle Ned would give us each a $50.00 bill.
I don't have that memory, lol!

Yes, those stories were very cute! My fave memory of Christmas was about 1971 or -72, I was 6 or 7. It was Christmas Eve, maybe early- to mid evening. We were all excited about Santa coming and I guess Mom had a hard time getting us to settle down so that we would go to bed and she & Dad could play "Santa."
She wanders over to the door of our duplex apartment and exclaims, "Hurry, you have to see this! It's Santa and his reindeer flying in the sky!" We rush to have a glimpse-but alas, Santa was gone! Sigh. A few seconds later she did it again-we rush over-Santa is gone!
I still remember the excitement I felt that night of catching a glimpse of Santa in the sky!

I got to pass the wine and crackers to the next person. I needed some help from my mom. It was fun! I can't wait till this April to do it again! -Stephanie
Oh yeah, fun, fun, fun!
"junk in the trunk" is a term (at least in the u.s.a.) that refers to a woman who has a nice, big butt.. however, i am talking about literal junk in your trunk (or "loot in your boot" for you brits).. remember those days that you lived as a jw?
remember sticking lots of literature in the trunk of your car just in case jehovah "led" you to a "sheeplike" person?
you remember!
Funny story-I can just picture SIL in that predicament!
since i've been pretty much out of touch, for the last three months, i thought it time for an update.
i would like to thank those that kept in touch via email and y!m.
you know who you are, and you certainly made some difficult times more bearable.
Welcome back LT! I have missed your friendly face around this place! Plus, I wanted to tell you that I read your story on your webpage and thought it was AWESOME!!
