  this past weekend, one of the few remaining jw relatives who will still discuss jw stuff with me told me about his recently attending a home bible study being conducted by an elder.

  evidently, the study had been told or had picked up some info about the 1975 fiasco.

  the elder totally denied that the society had stated or even led people to believe that armageddon would occur in 1975, and he naturally blamed some individual jws for misinterpreting the society's materials.

  i was among those too young to know, but i wouldve been suprised if stock-piling had NOT been very common, just based on how many JWs were stock-piling for Y2K. the society wasnt even suggesting anything to do with the GT (and that 'end of the century' quote does NOT count) but just having that letter read to all the congregations about being prudent and having basic emergency items on hand (you DID hear about that letter didnt you?) was enough to get a lot of people started. and that was in the city. i wonder what it mustve been like in the more rural areas.

  why, come to think of it, i remember getting a bit of a shocked expression from brothers when id tell them not to worry about Y2K, nothing was going to happen. i guess i experienced, on a very small scale, the same treatment that some of you did back in 75 who called for a modicum of restraint and who were labeled as unfaithful.

  he sounds to me like a pretty fair guy who's just getting a bit tired of everyone hassling him about the NWT. id like to have a glance at that book he wrote sometime. also, its hard to weigh the merits of his rebuttals without seeing the statements which they address. where are these listed?

  when i was first having doubts about the organization, i stumbled across the following site.... .

  well, this doesnt seem like a big deal. language is as language is used. jehovah was used for centuries. lots of foreign names have inaccurate translations. i kind of see the difference with the adonai vowels here in that this was a DELIBERATE inaccuracy but it seems like kind of a fine distinction.

'course there's always "the ants are my friends, are blowin' in the wind", or even "the dawning of the age of malaria" for us slightly middle-aged types.. how many misheard lyrics did you ever sing?.

  another funny kingdom melodies misread for me as a kid was everyone's favourite, 'we're jehovahs witnesses' where it goes:

  but it warns the wicked who gods name defame
  pardon it holds out to men
  if they turn to god again

  as a kid not understanding the old religious hymn inverted sentence order, i thought the pardon was an 'oops. pardon.' so that the song was saying, 'all the wicked are gonna die! oooops, i mean UNLESS they come back.' like an afterthought. i still think of it that way to this day.

  It is also interesting to note that a couple of years ago, the
  required monthly hours for pioneers dropped by 10. The
  intention was to make it easier for more people to pioneer.
  Well, guess what? The numbers went down anyway. So,
  the society was hit with a decrease in pioneers, and an 11%
  reduction in hours per person at the same time. Nice strategy.

  oops, think you meant 70 right. there was a temporary boost in RP & AP numbers at the time (jan 99) which met with much fanfare. but i think the downwards trend has evened out now. hours continued to drop at an amazingly even rate despite the change.

  i think it was less of a 'strategy' than a 'quick - what the hell should we do?' the unstated buffer between the monthly quota and the yearly quota was removed (ie 1000 / 12 = 83.3 not 90) so that pioneers could no longer do the monthly numbers and end up ahead in summer for vacation time. it seemed like there might be some underlying reason for this at the time but now i think this simply didnt occur to the people making the change. same thing with the fact that the change was made in january which is the MIDDLE of the service year. so we were all like, 'well, what do we need for this year?' some elders were doing all kinds of clever math trying to figure out how to divide up the two systems over the 98-99 service year until clarification came which sounded kinda like, 'look, just do the 840.' as though again, it simply hadnt occured to anyone that there might be confusion.

  order in chaos

  some people here seem pretty clued up on science, so can anyone explain:.

  does the fact that disorder increases with time (the entropy thermodynamic law), contradict the fact that there is order in chaos (the fact that an underlying order can be found in seemingly chaotic systems).. what goes up must come down

  i think its a little difficult to compare the 'types' of laws, like gravity and entropy. one thing with entropy i find is that it is poorly understood. what it seems to say in laymans terms is that everything gets disorganized if left alone. what it means clinically is a bit more precise than that. after all, how do you measure the 'orderliness' or 'disorganization' of a system? altho it seems like kind of a subjective measurement, it is actually very strictly defined. i wont try going into it myself here. and the idea of what is a closed system is also a very specific concept that determines how this 'law' applies.

  if you read that talk.origins article you'll see how complicated the subject can be. i actually had thought of posting it too when i first read your question ballistic, but changed my mind thinking that it was probably way more technical an article than you were looking for.

  if i understand it, the defendant had been asked the question (words to this effect): "if you were asked in court whether you are guilty or innocent, what would be your answer?

  trial including why the verdict was thrown out--if i understand it.

  thanks for the well-written account of the details.

  i think an important thing to note here is how the efforts of someone, (probably an xjw from the sounds of it) altho hopefully well-intentioned, actually hurt the case they were trying to help.
