In answer to your thread title cedars, I seem to remember that Christiandom was asleep at the time - perhaps they'd consumed too many parrots' eggs -this is how some groups, according to Sir James Frazer, kept succession fresh and youthful. So the GB, as they were awake spiritually, were appointed. but i think it is time they are given some parrots' eggs.

The great unanswered question - WHO chose the Governing Body to serve as representatives?
by cedars inwho is the governing body?.
put simply, the governing body purports to be a small group of anointed men (currently numbering 7) who represent a much larger group (numbering the thousands) of anointed individuals living on earth today.
in nearly every reference to their position of oversight over the worldwide brotherhood, the governing body refer to themselves as being representatives.... .

Luke 7:28 among those born of women there is no one greater than John
by N.drew in....yet he who is least in the kingdom of god is greater than he" said jesus.
that always bothered me that john would be condemned to earth (i can't say what i'm thinking about that) and the members of the "governing body" who seems to have no clue are going to heaven.
so i looked it up.. i have an alternate interpretation.. there is no one greater than he who is born of a woman but even he is http://concordances.org/greek/3398.htm small in the realm of the kingdom of heaven because the kingdom of heaven is much greater than one person.

oops just checked the NWT - they have the verse translated better than others as they have used comparative adjectives, but their interpretation could do with going much further
But a person that is a lesser one in the kingdom of God is a greater one than he is (NWT - Luke7:28 latter half)
this could be translated as
But lesser is greater in the kingdom of God than him (as he is now)

I had to turn that round so many times, NDrew to understand what you are saying. (Haven't had my coffee yet)
You are so right. The adjectives in the Greek are comparative not superlative. mikros=small, mikroteros=smaller whereas mikristos=least. So to be faithful to the Greek I reckon your translation and interpretation is better and makes much more sense than the NWT.

love it. Plus it fits with other conceptions of earthly and heavenly realms around at the time. Closer to our own time people like Nietzsche (from a non religious viewpoint) encouraged the idea of looking up at the wide starry heavens...

Ding dong with 4 JWs this morning
by Qcmbr inthe jws were out in our area this morning and i bolted downstairs before my wife could waive them away as she normally does.. two ladies (mum and 24 year old daughter i later found out) initially stopped as i opened with a comment about how i couldn't trust a thing they say because they are taught to practice theocratic warfare.. the mother blinked and asked me what that was ( so it began ) i informed them both that they are allowed to lie or at least be evasive with the truth with worldy people.
she countered that they are taught not to lie so i again asked her if she knew what theocratic warfare meant and she again said no (first of my many - 'please go look that up' statements .).
i then moved onto the idea that they couldn't think independently outside the organisation due to fear of being disfellowshipped and shunned.

by hamsterbait ini have just finished ray franz "crisis of conscience":.
i agree with him that this "truth" has become like living in a police state, in fear of saying or doing anything that might even retroactively label you a "wicked person".
i was dragged up from the late 60s.

CERNE LAB IN Switzerland -- Major News
by Band on the Run inthe new york times and every news shows was reporting that the particle collider in switzerland ran a test that could divulge the god factor in the fabric of the universe.
there is an official name for it that sounds like two last names combined.
particle physics is not my strong suit.. the journalists voices sounded very excited.

The Higgs boson's nickname 'god particle' has no theological significane whatsoever, and the name was never intended to imply the existence of a deity. The nickname was popularised by the media, based on the title of a book, The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question? Originally the author was going to call it "the goddamn particle" because of the difficulty in identifying it, but his editor objected and shortened it to 'god particle'.
See also http://edition.cnn.com/2011/12/13/world/europe/higgs-boson-q-and-a/?hpt=hp_t2
Also, a boson is a type of particle, so Higgs boson particle is a tautology.
just to be clear, I certainly don't attach any theological significance to this, nor is the BBC. As for "higgs boson particle" being a tautology - it certainly isn't for me and I'm sure it isn't for many others here.
