The New York Times and every news shows was reporting that the particle collider in Switzerland ran a test that could divulge the God Factor in the fabric of the universe. There is an official name for it that sounds like two last names combined. Particle physics is not my strong suit.

The journalists voices sounded very excited. If true, I am a bit scared to know. Maybe stuff that seemed so unknowable is now knowable. I wonder if some weird consciousness is occurring about humans acquiring such knowledge, being aware that they have such knowledge.

Of course, there was a probability, not a slam dunk.

The Higgs boson's nickname 'god particle' has no theological significane whatsoever, and the name was never intended to imply the existence of a deity. The nickname was popularised by the media, based on the title of a book, The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question? Originally the author was going to call it "the goddamn particle" because of the difficulty in identifying it, but his editor objected and shortened it to 'god particle'.

Also, a boson is a type of particle, so Higgs boson particle is a tautology.

    The god particle . . . yeah

Identifying it's presence is one thing . . . I'll believe it is a particle when they tell me what it's made of.

just to be clear, I certainly don't attach any theological significance to this, nor is the BBC. As for "higgs boson particle" being a tautology - it certainly isn't for me and I'm sure it isn't for many others here.
