Yeah, I feel like, if we run a poll here, you'd find an overwhelming number of people on this board have (or would have had) no freaking idea what those lightening bolts stood for. Especially in a context where the symbol has been overloaded with "scout sniper." Surely we don't think the USMC is some sort of crypto-fascist organization, do we?

US Marines posed with Nazi "SS" flag in Afghanistan

related contentenlarge photothis sept. 2010 photo posted recently on the titiusville, fla.- based arms manufacturer .... san diego (ap) the marine corps on thursday once again did damage control after a photograph surfaced of a sniper team in afghanistan posing in front of a flag with a logo resembling that of the notorious nazi ss a special unit that murdered millions of jews, gypsies and others.. the corps said in a statement that using the symbol was not acceptable, but the marines in the photograph taken in september 2010 will not be disciplined because investigators determined it was a naive mistake.. the marines believed the ss symbol was meant to represent sniper scouts and never intended to be associated with a racist organization, said maj. gabrielle chapin, a spokeswoman at camp pendleton, where the marines were based.. "i don't believe that the marines involved would have ever used any type of symbol associated the nazi germany military criminal organization that committed mass atrocities in wwii," chapin said.
the corps has used the incident as a training tool to talk to troops about what symbols are acceptable after it became aware of the photograph last november, chapin said.. the image has since surfaced on an internet blog, sparking widespread outrage and calls for a full investigation and punishment, including bringing those in the photograph and anyone who condoned it to court martial.. "this is a complete and total outrage," said mikey weinstein of the military religious freedom foundation, headquartered in albuquerque, n.m.. his organization sent a letter to the head of the marine corps, gen. james amos, and defense secretary leon panetta on thursday, demanding punishment for those involved.. it was the second time this year the marine corps has had to do damage control for actions of its troops.

Sloppy Scholarship and 3rd Rate Love (3/1 WT)
by metatron inthis watchtower is supposed to help people identify true christianity, relative to their cult standards (march 1, 2012).
of course, they use the name 'jehovah' as a club to fend off other claimants - why does it not surprize me that they self reference this silliness by quoting the new world translation and its wrongful insertion of 'jehovah' in romans 10: 13?
no logic here..... and for proof that christians used the name, they offer an unreferenced quote from jewish sources in regard to burning christian books.

The whole point, factfinder, is that the NT goes out of the way to apply dozens of OT passages that originally refer to YHWH and directly re-interpret these to apply to Jesus. Romans 10 is just one typical example. The whole point is that the primitive Church insisted all these passages were really about Jesus. For the Wt to take these passages and put "Jehovah" back in them, when absolutely no valid reason exists to do so, is simply an attempt to make the books say something they do not say. We have a word for that.

Various JW apologists can see this change coming and have adjusted their arguments accordingly. Thus, in place of the old arguments that 144,000 was a literal number we find a new argument that looks something like this:
1. The number of the Body of Christ must be some natural number
2. The true church, the JWs, say that the right number is 144,000
3. So that is the right thing to think
Pretty simple, really. And clearly setting up for the shift to the idea that the number 144,000 is representative of the true, currently unknown number. This change is coming. And not one JW will give a shit when it comes.

{sigh} See, for example, the Atlanta web site explaining the reporting requirements:
http://www.archatl.com/offices/ocyp/report/r_childabuse.html
Excerpt:
Who Do I Call if I Am a Mandatory Reporter?
- If the alleged/suspected victim is a minor, call the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) in the county where the abuse occurred.
- A list of DFCS contact numbers can be found at here @ www.archatl.com.
- Be prepared to give them the child’s name, address, age, the nature of the suspected abuse, the name of the suspected perpetrator, and his/her relationship to the child.
- Follow-up with a letter to DFCS.
- Call the Office of the District Attorney in the county where the abuse occurred. (Only if involves Church Personal)
- A list of DA office contact numbers can be found at here @ www.archatl.com.
- Be prepared to give them the suspected victim’s name, address, age, the nature of the suspected abuse, the name of the suspected perpetrator, and his/her relationship to the suspected victim.
- Follow-up with a letter to the District Attorney’s Office.
- If the alleged abuse involves archdiocesan personnel (priests, deacons, teachers, employees or volunteers) do all of the following after contacting DFCS and the District Attorney’s Office:
- Call 1-888-437-0764 (24 hours a day) to file a report.
- Call the Archbishop’s Office at 404-920-7300 so that the Archdiocese of Atlanta can be an active participant in cooperating with the appropriate state and local authorities. The report to the Archdiocese is NOT in lieu of the report to the appropriate state and local authorities.
- Immediately fill out and return the form, “Report of Suspected Child Abuse by Archdiocesan Personnel.” This form is available at www.archatl.com. Once you complete the form, mail it to:
The Archbishop’s Office
2401 Lake Park Dr., S.E.
Smyrna, GA 30080, in an envelope marked “Confidential,”
or fax it to 404-920-7551 with a cover sheet. When Should I call the Police?
When you believe the child or vulnerable individual is in immediate danger or has been injured.
______________ So, a little bit of balance is appropriate, it seems to me. In some places, the responses have been pretty good. Other places, not so much. But, we should ask if other organizations have done significantly better. Is there room for improvement? Obviously, in some places. Do the JWs have anything remotely like this policy anywhere at all? - If the alleged/suspected victim is a minor, call the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) in the county where the abuse occurred.

I want to repeat this personal experience
by cptkirk inno need to go into details (if you want details then i'll give more) but just for the sake of brevity, i will state it succinctly.
i just want to also note, this is not even one of crazier things i've seen with these people.
i was at a meeting for field service ok...you know how they will have one guy take the group out, and he will ask questions about presentations and things like that right?

I don't know... that elder pretending to choke the life out of somebody... Maybe it was a rational response.

Productivity is not the point of the exerise, so the fact that it is a waste of time a feature, not a bug.
The point of the whole field service thing is simply as a signaling method. Showing up demonstrates your bona fides. That is all. Nobody gives a shit that it is ineffective.

Well, blondie, here is the letter from the Pope to abuse victims in Ireland. You can judge for yourself whether this is an appropriate apology or not.
Excerpts:
I can only share in the dismay and the sense of betrayal that so many of you have experienced on learning of these sinful and criminal acts and the way Church authorities in Ireland dealt with them.
...
Certainly, among the contributing factors we can include: inadequate procedures for determining the suitability of candidates for the priesthood and the religious life; insufficient human, moral, intellectual and spiritual formation in seminaries and novitiates; a tendency in society to favour the clergy and other authority figures; and a misplaced concern for the reputation of the Church and the avoidance of scandal, resulting in failure to apply existing canonical penalties and to safeguard the dignity of every person.
...
To the victims of abuse and their families:
You have suffered grievously and I am truly sorry.
I know that nothing can undo the wrong you have endured.
Your trust has been betrayed and your dignity has been violated. Many of you found that, when you were courageous enough to speak of what happened to you, no one would listen.
Those of you who were abused in residential institutions must have felt that there was no escape from your sufferings.
It is understandable that you find it hard to forgive or be reconciled with the Church.
In her name, I openly express the shame and remorse that we all feel.
...
To priests and religious who have abused children:
You betrayed the trust that was placed in you by innocent young people and their parents, and you must answer for it before Almighty God and before properly constituted tribunals.
You have forfeited the esteem of the people of Ireland and brought shame and dishonour upon your confreres.
Those of you who are priests violated the sanctity of the sacrament of Holy Orders in which Christ makes himself present in us and in our actions.
You can read the entire thing yourself and decide whether he is holding anything back.

OTWO, sometimes yes and sometimes no. In plenty of cases, that has been exactly true. on the other hand, the Pope has taken the initiative to meet with, and apologize to, groups of those who were harmed. Some bishops have done the same. SNAP may be correct in this case, or not.

Designs, you are correct. It it very common that people defend institutions which they love at all cost. See, for example, the Penn State decisions and reactions of most of the Penn State students: Joe Paterno's actions, I think we agree, merit anything except an outpouring of love and support by the students.
In any case, the Church has taken what seem to be very serious steps to reduce this sort of crime and has paid out lots of cash. There is always room for criticism, of course, but Blondie posting a link from one of the parties involved in litigation is not necessarily helpful for becoming better informed about the overall situation. It may well be true that the subpoenas are some sort of outrage demonstrating once and for all time the bottomless maw of Church perversion and depravity. But, SNAP's press release is not exactly an unbiased source.

Designs - my wife's family are Tennessee JWs. The grandmother, in addition to having an unusual number of stories about bootleggers in the family, owned a wide array of 1950s hill-people JW health viewpoints. But, like Foucault's Pendulum, conspiracy enthusiasts turn out not to be particularly discriminating in their consumption of conspiracy theories.
