  On a side note, are the Moravians still around? I don't know anything about them today. I know that they migrated to Ohio in the pioneer days and set up a town called Shoenbrun, which in German means beautiful spring. They converted a group of Indians to Christianity. Later, soldiers came from Pennslyvannia and slaughtered the Christian Indians. The "pagan" Indians were so outraged that they pursued the soldiers for 200 miles, overwhelmed them, and slowly tortured the general in charge. If the Indians were "savages", they had every reason to be such.

  This has nothing to do withi anything that is being discussed here. I was just curious if you knew this or anything else about this group.

  what is revealed about the societys motivations regarding reporting (or not) of child abuse to secular authorities?

  You are a very intelligent, articulate person. Why don't you get out of the "organization" or as I would rather call it "the machine", so that you can make a difference. You will never be able to reform this massive system.

  The Poor JW Children

  the children.

  there are many things that could be changed, and even though i would never go back, i think there are some very basic changes they could make in their child rearing practices, simple changes that would make a big difference in their society.. 1. don't force small children to sit for two hours in a chair.. this was discussed at length on the thread about slapping children at the kingdom hall.. 2. don't bring children to meetings where the subject has to do with adult sexual practices.. 3. don't tell teenagers that they can't ask someone out for a date unless marriage is on their mind.. 4. don't tell them that they are not special, that they have to humble themselves and be like everyone else.. 5. don't tell them they have to get good grades through high school as a reflection of what jehovah has given them and then tell them they can't go to college when they graduate from high school at the top of their class.. 6. don't tell your wordly neighbors that you give your children presents all through the year, but not on their birthday, when they have never seen a special gift wrapped present in their life.. 7. don't expect a shy child to enjoy going from door to door and don't expect an extroverted, lively child to sit still at meetings.. 8. don't tell an inquiring child not to ask questions and don't tell them not to read interesting books.. 9. don't surprised if you don't change your ways that your children will leave you, even though they love you.

  -u.s.a. here paul was showing the corinthian christians the inconsistency of taking disputes between christians before secular tribunals.

  The Amish

  I started a thread that gives a web site for an entire book about the Amish. Behind their peaceful religious exterior are horrendous problems that have a chilling similarity to the JW situation. It is a griping story.

  David Yoder's strategy for fighting both the religion and the social services system might be useful to look at. He really learned how to get the lawyers, social workers, and politcians off their complacent asses.

  The second question you asked: Why do I post here? Because the religion you belong to has damaged a lot of people and it is good to share our experiences as part of the healing process.

  Go to a kingdom hall. Ask them which book best describes there basic beliefs. Buy it and leave and don't give them your address. It is simple as that.

  Tiawani,

  Most here are not JWs, but we know a lot about it. If you want a JW point of view, go to a local kingdom hall and attend each one of their meetings for, say, two weeks and also buy some of their literature. Come back here if they try to con...er... recruit you.

  God's will or free will?

  i've heard many people tell me about bible prophesy.

  if the bible can predict future events then it stands to reason that those events are predetermined and man has no choices in this world.

  think about all the choices you've made in your life and how different life for you would be if you had done things differently.

  If we have free will, then it limited. It is limited by our genetics. Our intelligence, physical characteristics, and talents have an upper limit that is set geneticly. Also, some of our illnesses, both physical and mental, are predetermined. We are also limited by the culture we live in. Our language, gestures, mannerisms, and many of our daily habits are determined by our culture. Within these constraints I guess we have free will. As a person, I feel like I have free will. As a scientist, I believe in determinism.

  last weekend we had dinner with my wife's family.

  they had just "enjoyed" their circuit assembly.. their circuit met in two halves over two weeks (avoids the mad scramble to the dining room that way).

  total baptized for the entire circuit (a city circuit)?

  Under the thread "JW decline", I summarized some statistics. For one, they have shown zero growth or decline in 22 countries over the last two years. Their growth is entirely in third world countries. One fact that I forgot to mention is that their number getting baptized in these 22 countries has fallen by 30-50% over the last ten years. The basis for my summary can be found at Randy's freeminds site.
