normie,
One thing you might consider doing is taking some evening college classes. It will improve your resume and give you an excuse to miss some meetings. Also, even the most boring college class is more interesting than another Watchtower study.
well someone had to do it, so it might as well be prim & proper prisca to do the honors in the sex forum...... .
this thread is for all newbies to introduce yourselves.
whatever you feel happy to reveal about yourself.

i was in england on business last week and took the opportunity to visit my jw parents for an afternoon before returning to the london area for a flight today (saturday).
i had a pleasant time with them but i carefully avoided certain topics.
i almost couldn't resist saying something at some points but i let it pass.
Back in the 50's the rules weren't as strict as they were later. I went to two proms and took a Witness girl in each case. My high scholl buddys were somewhat envious of the cute girls I took.
As 1975 approached, I thought that the rules would get tighter, which they did. That's when smoking became a disfellowshipping offense. I thought that after 1975, they would relax a bit. I was wrong on that one. They got even tighter. I think the rule of only dating someone if you have marriage intentions was a total disaster. Men in their seventies living in the cloistered walls of Bethel shouldn't make the rules for normal teenagers.
i have made a couple of remarks regarding family dynamics on other threads, but i thought it's be nice to start a new thread.... i'm no psychologist, but suffice it to say i see some similarities here.
(please add to/comment on these thoughts).
the organization wishes to be seen as our mother.
Lisa,
I am curious as to how the sister reacted to your remarks. I would bet that she thought that you were spiritually weak at best, or even worse you were starting to sound like an apostate. First of all, you didn't agree with her, and of course we should be agreeable under all circumstances. It's called tact, you know. Second, you value independence, and independence in the Witness mind is a bad thing.

DannyBear,
Thank you for providing your recolletions. Your memories indicate that the ideas in 1958 were not restricted to the midwest, where I live, but must have pervaded the country.
TR,
They cover their tracks by rewriting history. Since most people, not just the witnesses, have little interest in history, very few go back to review the actual historical record. In my own case, it was this research quest that lead to the demise of my beliefs. This began when I was 18 years old. I met a young man, my age, who was an ocassional meeting attender. His grandfather was an old time believer, but not involved. The grandfather told my friend, who told me about the pyramid belief. I thought that such an idea was not possible so I went to used book stores, got some of he old books, and read about this foolishness, plus much more. That enlightenment was the beginning of the end of belief for me.
The JW's most recent history book is chock full of errors, deception and down right lies. I'll give you an example. They state, rightly so, that Ruthford's wife remained in California due to ill health. They also talk about Rutherford's many trips to California. One would assume that he spent time with his wife, as is implied by their statements. The fact is, that Mrs. Rutherford never lived with the Judge at Beth Sarim.
hi people.
i am a df'd person hoping to return to the fold.
i am not critical of the decision to df me nor of the loving organization i believe to be in the palm of jesus hand.. i would find it most encouraging to hear from others who feel the same and would like to "hold hands" on the way back.. this board is hailed as a supportive respectful place so if you do not fit this description may i ask you to move on and not hinder the participants here in following their god given right to pursue their goal.
Mommy,
Some of the rules have become stricter over time, e.g., smoking and some have become more lenient. The military draft is an example of an easier situation today. During World War II, my older cousin spent three years of a five year sentence in a Federal prison. When I was of draft age, most spent a year at an honor camp, a prison in the woods with minimum security. At that time you could not ask for this, but the judge could sentence you to hospital service. This happened to my sister's husband. He "lucked out" because he had an enlightened judge. Of course today, a Witness can serve alternate nonmilitary service and not have to face a jail sentence at all.
Times and situations change now don't they.
By the way, we were instructed that when you got your draft notice, you would go report. When they read the oath and when they told everyone to take one step forward to acknowledge the acceptance of the oath, that you must remain in place. At that point, you would be taken away for sentencing.

DannyBear,
You mentioned above that you remember this belief of the resurrection of the Old Testemnet faithful. Do you remember what year that was? As I mentioned, I heard it as late as 1958. I understand that Fred Franz tryed to dispell this belief at a convention on the east coast in 1953, but this was not put in print, and his message did not reach the heartland.

Mommy,
After my mother was disfellowshiped for smoking, none of her JW sisters ever came to see her, some of whom she had known for as many as 30 years. (They did not have shepherding calls in those days.) When my mother died, we didn't have a service. There would have only been three people there: my sister, an active Witness, and my wife and I - both inactive.
As you can tell, from my posts regarding Beth Sarim and Rutherford, I enjoy integrating historical information. Here's the history of smoking: At one time it was acceptable. Rutherford smoked the finest cigars money could buy, along with the finest Candian wiskey illegally obtained during prohibition. Later, smoking was frowned upon, but had no negetive consequences. When the rules got harsher before the 1975 end of the world predictions, it became a disfellowshipping offense.

Typo,
The WT reference above should be 6-1-40, not 6-1-49.

A few more details,
The deed for Beth Sarim was signed on December 24, 1929. Rutherford wrote in the deed that he could use Beth Sarim as a residence until the "ancient worthies" arrived. Thus, he spent his winters in a mansion all during the Great Depression while much of the rank and file where living in poverty.
After Beth Shan was built in 1939, there were rumors going around about something happening on the proverty. A year after completion, the Watchtower (6-1-49, p. 162) stated that "unreliable people" were saying that Beth Sarim was being expanded to provide a place of security. It said that JWs should "circulate the kingdom message rather than the false imaginings of others." This was a clever lie from the WT. Something very significant was being done on the property, not to Beth Sarim, of course, but to a larger, better designed structure, Beth Shan. In their denial, they made the rank and file feel guilty for listening to a (true) rumor, by replying with a deceptive answer. This has been a common tactic over the years. Use deception and blame the rank and file for their questioning.
Although Beth Sarim is mentioned several times in the WT literature, Beth Shan is only mentioned once. This is a very vague description of the property, with no indication of what was going on there. (Consolation, 5-27-42)
After the properties were sold, the concept of the ancients' early resurection was not mentioned in the literature again. Even so, there were witnesses, who believed ten years later that these Old Testement men might return at the 1958 world assembly in New York.
