DF,
How many gifts did you give last year, and to whom? I asked this on another forum to a JW, both on the forum and to his private x mail. He never did answer me. (Please exclude school supplies and other things that you had to buy anyway.)
clearly there is a great deal of anti-jw sentiment here and elsewhere for that matter.
such feelings are generally directed at those at the heart of the organisation and there are no such feelings for the rank and file who are often very genuine people.. in actual fact there are some advantages in being a fully loaded jw and to be fair it would be interesting to note them down.
they can be factual or whimsical or both.

the following discussion is based upon a question raised by larc, under another thread posted earlier.
it was interpreted that i could not answer the question.
the question was then, followed up by circare to the effect that i should comment upon it for the benefit of others who may be listening.. i have decided to respond.. these are the actual quotes, asked of me.. ...one minor point.
MDS,
From reading your last post, I get the idea that you only want to communicate with those who believe your conclusions with out question. Most people's minds don't work that way, and if they do have a lack of critical thinking, I think that is very undersirable.
As you are well aware, most people on this forum were sold a bill of goods that proved to be false. As a result, they are not in a hurry to embrace another belief system that is equaly speculative, in there view.
In your last post above, your language shows a lot of anger with all your name calling. Why? Teachers should teach, not insult. Doesn't Isaiah saying something like "come let us reason together"?
after reading the posts in parenting re: spanking and the wol thread, it made me ask: is there anything we can do as an individual or group to stop the abuses of the wtbs?.
i know i personally take any watchtower or awake articles i see placed in places (laudromats, hospitals, etc.
) and discard them.
Happy,
I would suggest that you call 1-800-why-1914. They have good literature and good counselors to help people on the phone. You could put an ad in your local paper telling about them. They would live you good advice on what kind of ad works best. This could help those who have questions, but not effect those who are content, because they wouldn't respond. I assume that you could put the address of this forum, but you might want to check with Simon first.
A double life.
I don't see anything wrong in that. I've stated my opinions several times on this subject. I think you should fade out, not blast out. No need to tell them your private thoughts or write a formal letter, in my opinion. This will give you more time with your friends there, and if you are inanactive, but not confrontive, they may still talk to you. That's what I did it, and it worked as well as can be expected.
JAVA,
I forgot one. How does it fit the witness profile? It doesn't. If some kid gets of drugs and cleans himself up that's wonerful. If some down trodden women with three kids by five different fathers gets her life straightened out that's grand. However, they don't want some schizophrenic looney's running loose at the kingdom hall. That's why Bergman is wrong. They won't get in.
After all they are demonized.
Hey JAVA,
Nothing like answering an eight part question. First, of all are there degrees of schizohrenia, no, it's like pregnancy either you've got it or you don't. Can medication help? Yes, and the sooner the better. Families go throught denial, poor little Tim will be OK, then the elders come over to give the cure of more meetings and more service and time is going by and the person's chance of recovery diminish.
Now I have no idea what your next question is? Do JWs have higher or lower concerns about mental illnesses? I don't know, but my guess is that they would like to ignore the problem just like everyone else. It's damned inconvenient to deal with.
Now, the final question for a million dollars and no life lines left, and it isn't even multiple choice. The relationship between mental illness and poverty. No relationship with psychosis. It is an equal opportunity destroyer. Depression, etc yeh there is a correlation but a weak one. I've known some happy poor people and some miserable rich people, but, yeh poverty does have it's disadvantages. However, most "normal" people adapt to their circumstances and seem to go through life with about the same degree of happiness, no matter what, short of getting their morning paper delivered late. :):):)
first a quoted post from w.o.l.
why we sometimes adjust our beliefs .
when a watchman is posted on the watchtower, he must report all perceived approaching threats.
Prisca,
When you grow up in it, it is not brainwashining, it is not indoctrination, it is a way of life. If is no different than an Apache Indain here or an aborigines in Australia. It's a way of life, and try to remember that.
JAVA,
Your description of the chaplain who was worried about the incidence of schizophrenia reminded me of a sad story. I know a young man with severe mental problems. His therapist wanted to delve into his childhood and talk about how his parents treated him. I said, "Mark, don't do that. Your parents had nothing to do with it. You have an illness and they are not responsable." He called me two weeks ago from Michigan and told me that since his father died, I am his adopted father. I don't think he thought my words were too harsh.
JAVA,
I think that the JWs appeal to the down trodden, the poor, the down hearted. Among these the JWs pick and choose. They will not, for example, welcome in the florid schizophrenic, with all his craziness. They will look for the realatively lucid down and outers and show them a better way. So, in this regard I disagee with Bergman, they don't bring in schizpphrenics. They are afraid of them like most people are.
as i think back on my life now i have come to personally experience a verse from a song: "i'd rather be sorry for something i've done that for something that i didn't do.
" i guess that's just a variation of the old addage: 'its better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all'.
fear is a natural (and good) thing but i wonder how much unwarranted fear has robbed us of things that we would have truly enjoyed.
Frenchy,
I'm sorry if I made light, and mommies words brought me right up tight, to take a second look at the words, and now they resonate because... I took chances and made mistakes, so shameful that I can not tell, and at the age of 60 I reflect, how much good and how much bad, but I know I did the best I knew, and have regrets, which I can not change, but wake up to another day and do the best I can, and like it says, that when we stare, we are "looking through a glass darkly", said our brother Paul.
