One thing I did was to read the introduction to all of these versions, and it struck me that they all used considerable care, time, effort, and expertise to give a good rendering to the scriptures. I do not have this information at my fingertips, but I have read that although the NWT is one of the first readible Bibles it is not held in high regard by scholars.
could someone turn to revelation 9:11. i am always hearing of only two angels being named in the bible, but now i am seeing this one.
the text reads from mine:.
rev 9:11 - they have over them a king, the angel of the abyss.

I found seven versions of the Bible that were translated in the last half of the twentieth century. They all have the same meaning to John 8:7 that I referrred to above. These are:
1. The Living Bible
2. The Phillips Modern English Bible
3. Revised Standard Version
4. Today's English Version
5. New International Version
6. The Jerusalem Bible
7. The New English Bible
Which new, good version or versions are you referring to that translates this differently?

in the cong i grew up in, it was so small-minded that if you were single, and seen talking to a member of the opposite sex, you were presumed to be in some sort of relationship with him/her.. sex before marriage is out of the question, with heavy petting also looked down upon.

Sometimes I wanted to leave 5 minutes early myself. I found that the best thing to do was to ask if there were any questions. The room would fall silent. If a student was dumb enough to ask a question and prolong the misery they would be soundly flogged once they left the room, I'm sure.
Regarding affluence, I retired at 100% of pay, of course that's easy to do when you make 10 thousand a year.
