by headisspinning inthis thought isn't fully formed, but maybe someone can expand on it.... i've been keeping an eye on the situation developing with steven unthank's case against the wt in australia - how they have completely disregarded the law about child abuse registry checks for elders - and it seems to be that they've done the very thing we all lived in fear of doing: bringing reproach on jehovah's name.. they talk about how if jw's engage in wrong conduct they are bringing reproach on god's name, or how satan has heaped reproach on jehovah's name... well, it seems to me they are doing an awfully good job of it themselves.... in addition look at the qualifications for an elder as laid out in 1 timothy... with these words in mind, it seems to me the gb have since disqualified themselves.... 1 timothy 3:1-7 .
1 it is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do.
2 an overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,.

Australia is thousands of miles away and on the opposite side of the planet from New York. Furthermore, its population is less than that of several American states. So that means very few American Witnesses know about the Victoria court cases and the rest of the world is equally ignorant. The international news media have not discussed the story either. It wouldn't surprise me if it never gets any mention in the mainstream media.
30 years ago maybe. But there is a wonderful little thing now called 'the internet' that changed all that. That's how you and I are reading about it right now whereas years ago, we wouldn't have known anything about it. Did any of us ever think that the WTS would be featured on Dateline or 20/20? No of course not. Yet they were. The problem is is that they think they're untouchable and somehow protected by Jehovah. Well, they're finding out that they're not and He's not.
Should be very interesting to see where this all goes......

Funny you should mention that because that's exactly what's happened in the past. On November 1, 1755, a gi-normous earthquake hit off the coast of Lisbon, Portugal; by today's standards, it was on equal footing with the earthquake that hit Japan earlier this year. 40 minutes later, a 50 foot tsunami rolled in and killed anywhere from 10,000 to 200,000 people. And the irony? 20 major churches were destroyed while the brothels remained unscathed by the disater.
I guess Satan really likes those whore-houses.

I have to have an MRI done. I went to get my stitches out yesterday and my doctor says I have a concussion. She also told me that the numbness in my forehead is not from the nerveblock, but from severed nerves. I might not get my feeling back around the decision.

Jeff, I'm sorry if you felt that I attacked you. But you've got to admit that since you've 'switched sides', you seem to be incredibly intolerant of anything other than atheism. The fact that you said it makes you "sick to your stomach" at the thought of any human worshipping some sort of God and apparently think that anyone who does so is lacking in intelligence far behind your "mentally retarded cousin" who gave up on the Easter Bunny.
I agree partially with your view in that fundamental Xtians (or fundies from any other religious group) have some crazy-assed narrow views. And I toyed with atheism myself both after my brother died and after my brother in law died as I simply could not comprehend how any God of love could allow us to have to endure such shit on a continual basis. While I no longer believe in the God of the bible, I think it makes more sense to me that something or someone started it all and more or less left us to shift for ourselves. I could be wrong, but I could also be right.
What I'm suggesting to you is not that you give up your beliefs, but that you should not attack others on the board who sincerely still believe in something spiritual. I do that with my JW family, simply because they don't shun me. Yes, the board can get antsy sometimes when we all view our opinions, but you just seem bent on sneering at anyone who still believes in God or a creator of some sort and that is what some find so offensive. There is no "proof" for God; it's mostly circumstantial evidence so for you to demand 'scientific evidence' for God....well, apparently unless God shows up at your doorstep, you're not going to believe he/she exists. And that's okay. But don't demean others who chose to have a faith in something beyond this world. I think you're a better person than that.

After 9 years on this board, my jaw just dropped when I read this one. It's obvious that Toole (what an appropriate name for any asshole lawyer who would defend the Borg) is simply trying to play semantics, much like they do every time the WTS is dragged to court. Reminds me of the Olin Moyle case where one of the GB (was it FF?) who admitted under oath that Witnesses must believe a doctrine even if it's based "on error".
This failure on the part of the Governing Body to appear or to be represented was noticed by the Magistrate who took the unusual step of suggesting and recommending to Steven Unthank that criminal charges be brought against every single member of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses as opposed to the unincorporated body known as the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. The only thing that may actually prevent this from really happening is that Steven Unthank lacks the financial resources.
If I were in Australia, I'd kiss the Magistrate for this one! Barb, thanks so much for posting this......And a big 'high five' to Steven Unthank for taking the Borg on. Please keep us posted.
