  I have a question on your last response about the name. Initially I didn't have any reaction to the name, but after reading some comments of others and more about what AAWA hopes to do, it prompted a couple of thoughts. While I am with you about how you either view the Watchtower as harmful or you don't, what about groups you hope to engage with, such as the media, abuse survivor groups, and others? Is there any concern about their reacting to the name? I would not expect that they would all view the Watchtower as harmful off the bat, and I hope the name wouldn't turn them off from giving you a voice. Sure, we can all get on board with a group about "anti-racism" or "against drunk driving," but I wonder if the media might shy away from engaging with a group with a name like "anti-Catholic" or "anti-Mormon" due to concerns about religious tolerance, and might view this group's name like the ones in the latter category? Just thinking out loud here...

  Elder and MS Extortion!

  the elders and ministerial servants at my hall were asked to attend a strange meeting last night.

  the society is asking for our help to raise $10,200.

  they are seeking to raise this money in april from elders and ministerial servants in our circuit only.

  Intreresting... what is the method they want to use to collect these donations? Are you just supposed to put extra in the contribution box as circumstances permit, or are you supposed to give it directly to an elder? Can the donations be made by check? I too would rule out a scam.

  The Quiet One - It seems like most of those involved have a track record such that most of us will not be overly suspicious that they will use donations in a nefarious way. Obviously no one has to donate who doesn't feel comfortable doing so. It seems that if anyone is uncomfortable the best course would be to wait and see what they do instead of being critical. To me, a crisis hotline seems like a great idea. Even if a couple people might be paranoid about calling in, it shouldn't stop them from helping the rest.

  Thank you for your opinion, Lisa. After the subsequent comments about the structure of the interview, such as those of Cedars and Juan, I feel that my initial observation (which I qualified as just being a potentially cynical opinion) is not indicative of anything being hidden. I still think it was an unusual way to answer the question, but I probably should not have read anything more into it. As I said, I meant no disrespect to Ms. Conti.

  Mind Blown - It was very clever of you to post definitions of smarmy and unctuous and to qualify your posts by saying they are for everyone else's benefit except mine. What exactly are you accusing me of? You say I am suspect. Suspect of what? If you have an accusation to make other than disagreeing with what I said in this thread, which it seems that you do, I think you should be clear about it, instead of hurling labels and definitions around. You are correct that I have experience with law. I'm in my last year of law school and have worked for a judge and for the government. I have not hidden that in my history on this site, although I don't proclaim it in every post because I don't think that makes my opinion more valuable than anyone else's. Perhaps that is why my comment came across in a way that seemed critical to some, although I fully support Candace and her case. In law school you are encouraged to question what lawyers do and what judges decide, and to try to see more than one side to every case (although as I have said, any issues about her past mistakes are in no way another side to this case - that is entirely irrelevant to the abuse case). If you still have accusations about my motives, I hope you have something more concrete to present.
