"High-Control Groups"
by Consfearacy inhttp://www.jwfacts.com/watchtower/similar-religions-to-jehovahs-witnesses.php .
"it is important to understand that in most bible-based cults, although the member is aggressively taught doctrine, it is not the doctrine that holds him in the group.
it is the sense that the group is god's true people, a feeling cultivated by techniques of mind control.

Why Are Jehovah's Witnesses Considered by Many to Be a Cult?
by Cold Steel inin a world thats growing increasingly profligate and vile, im concerned so much vitriol is aimed at churches like the jehovahs witnesses.
im not one, and i have theological differences with it; however other religions and former members of the religion seem to be unusually bitter and critical.
i admit to being unfamiliar with many of the social aspects of the church, but all churches have a hierarchal structure and its not unusual for many churches to also be dogmatic in relation to the scriptures.

Shunned by the world, then by the JWs and then shunned by Theists, when does this end?
by cyberjesus inwhen i was a jw i always hide my jw status to people of the world because i was taught that we were hated by satan and his world.
and indeed in school i experienced being ostracized by my religious beliefs and everytime i had to take a stand not saluting the flag i was the object of ridicule.. then when i left the jw now i am shunned by my family by taking a firm posture on my beliefs or disbeliefs.
now i am ostracized by my own jw family because i dont go along their set of doctrines.. now that i have abandoned any religious belief altogether feel how most people who dont believe in a god are ostracized from the majority of the populations.

Once a cheater, always a cheater
by Quillsky inif you discover, while getting to know a potential partner, that they have cheated on a previous partner........ don't touch them.
run run run.. in my opinion a cheat remains a cheat.
opportunity is the variable.. please discuss..

To paint all cheaters {insert any other label, too} with the same brush is a broad stroke of bias.
I completely understand what you're saying, TJ. But please note that I'm not saying "once a {insert any other label, too} always a {insert any other label, too}."
May I assume that you're a sexual cheater too? Not judging you but my proposition is simply that being open to sexual dishonesty in the ~now~ means that one will be open to cheating in the ~future~ if the situation, as you perceive it, is similar.

Live music in the Kingdom Halls
by Quillsky ini recall being young and having a lovely solo pianist accompanying the singing in our hall.. in around the late 70's the obligatory (canned, sad) recorded music replaced live musicians.. anyone have any more detailed memories of live music and the subsequent changeover?.

In fact, some JWs considered it a matter of pride that "Jehovah's people" sang so badly; it was kind of like an additional proof that JWs were totally different from the pagan churches of Christendoim who have well trained singers and practised choirs.
Ha ha ha Steve!! Never heard that before, but it's an astute observation that only an ex-JW could relate to!

As a Witness - What did you Notice in How Elders Got Appointed ?
by flipper ini found it amazing being raised in the witnesses to see exactly who got appointed sometimes as an elder.
it seemed that the criteria in my opinion had more to do with getting 10 hours a month in field service, answering at meetings, carrying microphones as a ministerial servant, or handling the magazine or literature counter !
in doing these " functions " and attending meetings on a regular basis - a man was thought to be considered " spiritually strong " and qualify to be an elder and serve on judicial committees judging people's personal problems.

seenitall....
I have no personal interest in helping you to lead a moral life. So respond to this. Will you choose the right thing for your wife and children? Wow awesome I've just had a few moments of "I don't give a fuck about ex-cult shit anymore".

People Who Refuse to Tip at Restaurants are Embarrassing!
by White Dove inegg and i were treated out to dinner three times last weekend by out of state visiting relatives.
just found out last night that they don't believe in tipping, at all!
we suggested the places to eat and frequent those places ourselves.

Bottom line, it's about the way a service provider makes your experience into an experience, rather than merely serving food, washing hair, and so on.
I hear what people are saying about how the cost of something should be the cost, period. However, you're not going to single-handedly change the world, or an eating-out culture, or an economy, or a society, so get with it when you're in Rome. Unless you want to be, or appear to be, culturally oblivious.
How difficult is it to add (discretionary) service onto the cost of a meal in your head, before you order or before you pay??
