  People Who Refuse to Tip at Restaurants are Embarrassing!

  egg and i were treated out to dinner three times last weekend by out of state visiting relatives.

  just found out last night that they don't believe in tipping, at all!

  we suggested the places to eat and frequent those places ourselves.

  Question: How many of you tip your hairdresser? Newspaper person? Bellhops? Cab drivers? How much?

  If my hairdresser or nail/beauty person owns the salon I don't tip them. But if they are employed by the salon then I do, around 10% of the total cost. Hair-washing or apprentice staff - an additional amount depending on how much time and attention they've lavished on me. Let's face it, you can have a quick shampoo, or you can have an orgasmic scalp massage and treatment!!

  Cab drivers - 10% to 20% - because it's cash and quick, I usually do a rough estimate and round upwards, depending on the actual denominations I have at hand.

  I also tend to ignore tip jars, which are on the whole a tacky little custom - unless I really have no need for the spare change.

  Hotel porters and similar - I make a point of reading up on (or asking about) the custom in the country/area and type of place I'm visiting. I have no embarrassment about going to a concierge desk at a hotel in another country and asking what a typical tip would be for a specific service. Sometimes I'm told "it's up to you", and then I press the issue to try and find out the range that the service provider would reasonably expect from a guest.

  I agree with White Dove......

  I believe in "When in Rome, do as the Romans" in showing common courtesy and appreciation.

  Do Elders and Bethelites really follow this site?

  just a question really and whilst i would not put it past them i sort of feel it is too 'conspiracy theory' for me.

  are elders and bethelites officially sanctioned to lurk (or engage) in this or other sites to try to weedle out apostates?

  does anyone have any direct experience of it happening?.

  I'm guessing you haven't been a Jehovah's Witness, am I right? JW's have had the fear of reading "apostate literature" drummed into them for many decades, and since the advent of the internet the org has been explicit about the "danger" of the internet, and especially "apostate" views on the internet.

  We're talking about a religion where even having a Facebook account is publicly condemned!!

  No, baptized Witnesses don't have freedom of speech or religion. If they are trying to convert you they rely heavily on the freedom of religion argument. Once you're in, if you shift your beliefs and make it known then you will be disfellowshipped and shunned.

  Merely reading a forum like this won't necessarily get one disfellowshipped, but it would probably go something like this --- first you will be called into a meeting with two elders where they will question you and "counsel" you against it. If you immediately express repentance and promise never to vsit here again then that may be the end of it. However, if you say anything to give a clue that you don't believe 100% of official teachings then you will likely be DF'ed for apostasy. (Many posters here have told their stories about being DF'ed for apostasy, but being caught reading/posting on a site like this is only one of the many routes to catching people out.)

  If someone has posted personal anti-JW views along with information that makes them identifiable to their elders then it's likely that they will proceed straight to DF'ing without passing Go. That's why people who post personal info on here are those that are already DF'ed or DA'ed. A current JW, such as one who is attempting a fade, seldom would.

  when i do this, i do this so as not to disturb the wife while she is sleeping.

  only this morning, she had already risen and was downstairs getting ready to go to work and just about to walk out the door.

  Back to the original question, do elders and Bethelites follow this site ...... I have absolutely no doubt that many do, on their personal cell phones where nobody can monitor their internet usage. Hi guys!

  most of us here know what a hypocritical, backstabbing bunch of gossips many of the jw's tend to be.

  far too often, a jw wont tell you to your face what's eating them, but they'll sure tell others.

  when i started waking up (the second time around) this made me very paranoid.

  To RosePetal, I completely understand where you're coming from and I feel sad about your pain.

  To Q. HaHaHa Witnesses aren't in your opinion any more gossipy than most people???????????? After 54yrs born in and moving around different congregations over the years in my [experience] [ NOT OPINION] the gossip was ripe. I have seen upteen peoples lives ruined including my own over spiteful gossip and lies.

  I agree that the organizational structure is designed to make people rat out their "brothers" and "sisters". No doubt about that at all, it's disgusting, and therein lies the obscenity of the high-control nature of the religion.

  But individual JW friends, sitting around a cup of tea or a beer, are not more gossipy than "worldly" people. People like to talk about other people everywhere on earth. I've made my peace with that, finally!

  To think that every wait person should receive the same tip for the same service would mean that one believes that every wait staff actually provides the same exemplary service. They don't.

  Exactly right!

  Someone mentioned earlier tipping 1c to make a point about bad service. Someone else mentioned tipping 30%. It's all good, discretionary is the point.

  Attendees don't tend to be drop-outs, druggies and losers (it's expensive and takes creativity to attend!!) - more like mostly professional people exploring different ways of living for a few days. To be honest I think you're fortunate to have Burning Man on your doorstep.

  In tipping cultures --- serving staff are paid a minimum amount for being there, setting up tables, learning about the menu, attending the staff meetings and so on.

  After that they are basically freelancers taking advantage of the opportunity the restaurant provides for them to create a good experience for you. The servers that stay are those that create theater for you. It's not about the food on your plate. Keep that in mind the next time you choose to eat in any experiential environment.

  Or eat at home, or get take-outs, your choice.
