Am I bad for doing that?
by asilentone insometimes when i see insect here in my home, i just put a drinking glass over it and let it die slowly.
am i that cruel?
.

I recommend you evaluate your relationship, as a human, with insects.
Only you know whether you are cruel or not. But here's a clue. How did you feel at the very moment you extinguished that liddle creature's only chance at life?

This is a serious question. Would I have to think or read something first? Sign something? (I assume not.) Be in a certain state of mind? If so, what state of mind?
If I didn't have the internet, to ask this very question, how would I know how to accept him as my personal savior?
Say tomorrow I wanted to accept Jesus as my personal savior, how exactly does accepting Jesus as my personal savior work?

I would have thought that after all these years of reading the Watchtower some of you people would know how to spell.
What?
One has to hear, read and talk to process and propogate Jehovah's Witness stuff. Not spell.

IF THE BIBLE is so darned great---why don't people JUST read IT?
by Terry inworking in a bookstore i notice the thousands and thousands of books "explaining" what the bible really "means.".
those are what people read.. when people say they read the bible they are really saying they "try".
but, it is like reading chinese.. so, what they end up doing is reading opinions.. opinions, conjectures, hypothesis, fantasy, imaginative ruminations, fanciful concoctions......other people's ideas presented as documentary fact.. .

just n said...
This is awesome - Terry starts a thread about how there are all these books and ideas that explain the various ways the Bible can be interpreted.
[snip]
Two pages in... various believers in the bible DJegg, PSac, JagBass, etc. start arguing about how it's supposed to be interpreted.
Thanks guys - you all continue to prove Terry's point.Exactly!
The Oracle wrote, after other great insights.......
But as for me and my household, we will chose modern common sense and dignity, over the ancient blatherings of nonsensical primitive morality mixed in with the occasional decent message as found in the bible. We will choose science, and unbiased observation over entrenched unchangeable opinions of religion. We will choose honesty over lies, and will choose understanding over mythology. We choose Moving On, not Looking Back. We choose peace and contentment, not bitterness and anger.
Loved your entire post, and it's households like yours that keep human society moving forward rather than backward. Thank you. Your kids will grow up to make a difference on this planet.
My thoughts.....
Imagine a 21st century "bible", a collection of writings.......
Emails, some genealogical records, Harry Potter, a history book, a legal document, a lifestyle magazine, a Reuters newsfeed, an analysis of Harry Potter comparing it to Lord of the Rings, some more emails, a bit of indulgent poetry, a post-grad thesis on migration, a self-help book, a cnn.com homepage, an autobiography, more emails.
Someone takes it all and declares this collection of ideas, facts and thoughts to be "the Bible".
That's how the Bible is, whether one likes it or not.

Are Earthquakes Really On The Increase?
by cognizant dissident ini had coffee with my jw mother today.
it was the weekend of her circuit overseers visit.
"a very nice man" according to her.

Oh please, "eathquakes on the increase"? Only three things are on the increase...... Human population and hence people who actually experience earthquakes, instant global communication, and record-keeping.
Everything is "on the increase" therefore...... cloud, rain, sunny days, birth, death and people wearing purple hats.

I said.....
In fact, Christian cultures clashing with Islamic cultures could be a brilliant thing to happen to civilization right now.
Palmtree, you said........
This statement is frightening. If these cultures clash, it can only mean war.
Not at all.
The sound of cultures clashing include everyday debates like this one; or the French legal system grappling with the right to wear hijab; or letters from readers in the British tabloids showing that people are at least thinking about Islamic culture in new ways that they weren't 20 years ago; or kids in playgrounds around the world understanding and respecting which friend's sandwich is halaal and which isn't; or the challenges of intercultural marriages and child-rearing.....
To use a quick parallel, consider how far black/white issues evolved in the last century in countries like the US and South Africa - different routes to peace and understanding, and ultimately cultural clashes helped to work things out without full-on war.
For me the most beautiful thing about cultures clashing is when our our similarities finally become clear. It's happened many times before and it will happen again.

The laws of Christianity are those of first century tribal desert-dwellers too...... built on the social requirements of the twelve tribes of desert-dwelling Israel in the centuries preceeding Christ, and followed by the subsequent desert-dwellers of Mohammed's time and beyond.
Islam is based on Christianity which is in turn based on Judaism. It's really only the far eastern religions and earth-based religions which are out of this crazy loop.
I'm a woman, Palm, and I'm completely with you on mistreatment of women in society. But I don't think your husband is about to have you stoned so that he can marry a 14-year-old. Not in the forseeable future anyway!
These issues are not about Islam. In fact, Christian cultures clashing with Islamic cultures could be a brilliant thing to happen to civilization right now.
The issues are about humans' treatment of other humans. I hope I've somewhat helped someone, somewhere, to see that.
