Perhaps hundreds of us could also write a brief obituary for the letters page of their local or regional newspaper?

We need a national story about Ray Franz's life
by moshe inlike everyone else here, i am praying for ray to pull through this medical crisis, but i realize the odds are not good.
i know it's not something people want to think about, their obituary, but i contacted a religion journalist and told her about ray franz, his life at bethel and his books.
i hope she passes the information on to the rest of the writers on their religion blog.

When a person is respected by thousands and hated only by those who would oppress others then he has lived a worthwhile life.

The gospel writers portray Jesus as a controversial teacher who was not afraid to challenge traditions. The gospels record a number of these incidents involving the sabbath, his attitude to women and his association with outcasts.
Interesting that there is not a single example of his upsetting the religious leaders by using the divine name. If it was such an important issue you would have thought he would have addressed it at least once?

New Creation Book
by God_Delusion ini was recently informed (on jwn) that plans to publish a new creation book were well ahead.
is this true?
if so, can anyone clarify this for me?.

I expect it will witter on about "intelligent design", "irreducible &/or specified complexity", and cosmoslogical constants.
It will likely be a lame attempt to become more sophisticated than the old creation book, probably borrowing all the discredited arguments of Behe and the other frauds at the Discovery Institute

Would Witnesses REALLY drink the "Kool-aid" if the faithful slave told them to? Yes or no?
by Witness 007 ina "spiritual leader" tells his followers the must put on rebok running shoes and "drink the cool-aid" to join a ufo in the tail of a comet and "go to a better world" so, afew dozen young people do just that to get "beamed up" to the mothership.
heavens gate cult 1990's.. my mother says "she is faithful to the organisation till her death" which makes me wonder if they ordered a mass suicide like the reverend jim jones did to escape a "great tribulation"....how many witnesses would really drink the cool-aid?...
without a gun pointed at their head of course!.

Where did England disappear to?
by dorayakii inengland is the oldest nation-state in europe.
it is a pround and historic nation that is often buried under a "british" identity by the uk government.
within the european unon, scotland and wales are treated as regional entities, yet england is broken up into 6 regions and is not acknowledged as an entity in itself.

The English make up the vast majority of the UK and its government, why on earth would it need its own parliament? There is a case for saying that Scottish MPs should not vote in matters pertaining only to England but that hardly makes the English a poor oppressed minority does it?
Gladiator - The nationality of the PM or senior politicians in the UK government is of no relevance, they are Brits not Scots when they serve the country. Stop wingeing and find an Englishman or woman who can do the job. You have almost managed to elect an English public schoolboy twit, lets see how he gets on. Of course Scotland and Wales should have measure of say in their own affairs, why shouldn't they? Are you begrudging us devolution now? Do you think "one size fits all" solutions are the best way forward?
Your right though, English people have not worked out how to celebrate their national identity without resorting to outdated attitudes of imperialism and xenophobia, but that's not our fault. Let us know when you solve that one.

Do Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus died for their sins?
by ThomasCovenant inhaving only been a witness for about 30 years i'm not really sure about the answer.
i would say 'yes' but does anyone know further.. i'm aware of the 'mediator only for the 144,00', but am i correct in saying the wts agrees, and by default all witnesses agree, that jesus died for their sins?.

No they pay lip service to "vicarious punishment". In fact they believe Jesus died for Adam's sins giving humans the opportunity to earn their own salvation

We are skeptical of claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life. Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged. (Discovery Institute 2004)
Since scientists are trained to examine evidence and to be skeptical of everything, even ardent evolutionists could sign such a statement. Indeed, it is well known that random mutation and natural selection are not the only mechanisms contributing to the complexity of life; other mechanisms such as genetic drift and symbiosis are important, too.
Most of the signators to the DI's list (about 80%) are not biologists; some are not even scientists. Generally speaking, mathematicians, electrical engineers, philosophers, and so forth are only marginally more qualified to comment on the validity of evolution than the average person on the street.
The National Center for Science Education has compiled, as a parody of lists such as that from the Discovery Institute, a list of more than 500 scientists all named Steve, or with variants of that name, who support evolutionThe statement signed by the scientists of "Project Steve" is more more specific:
Evolution is a vital, well-supported, unifying principle of the biological sciences, and the scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of the idea that all living things share a common ancestry. Although there are legitimate debates about the patterns and processes of evolution, there is no serious scientific doubt that evolution occurred or that natural selection is a major mechanism in its occurrence. It is scientifically inappropriate and pedagogically irresponsible for creationist pseudoscience, including but not limited to "intelligent design," to be introduced into the science curricula of our nation's public schools. (NCSE 2003)
