Dear Tammy, I'll definitely look into what Notacaptive has to say about this subject. I'm genuinely interested in understanding what other ways of considering this account can possibly satisfy other reasonable people. Any thread titles you can remember in particular? By the way, I've been wanting to tell you I find you a very sweet and brave person.

Reading peoples hearts
by highdose inhi.
this is inspired by another thread, but heres something that always bugged me.... if god wanted to know if abraham really was faithful... then why didn't he use his abilty to look into his heart and find out?
instead of putting the poor man and his son through a near death/ murder situation??

I left exactly one year ago after 45 years in, and I only discovered you three months later. I'm very proud I took the step relying exclusively on my inner voice... Having said that, I must give you a gigantic Thank you, for meeting you was one of the best presents life has granted me.

Dear Highdose, you are right: that particular account of Abraham contains some contradictions.
First of all, what you said: according to many scriptures, like 1 Samuel 16:7, "... as for Jehovah, he sees what the heart is", so all Jehovah needed to do was read his heart and imagine how Abraham would react. So isn't it weird that at Genesis 22:12, immediately after the test, Jehovah says: "... for NOW I do know that you are God-fearing in that you have not withheld your son..."?, implying the test had to actually be carried out for God to know what Abraham's reaction would be?
Secondly, putting somebody's faith to the test goes contrary to James 1:13: "...For with evil things..." (you all know the rest by heart).
And, last but not least, what kind of a psychopath must one be to put one's own son through this terrible ordeal: "Kill your beloved little child to prove how much you love me"?
I have a far higher opinion of God, if He exists, than to believe such a deplorable account actually took place.

Dear Mrsjones5, I think what Elderelite was trying to convey is the same very reasonable thought expressed by Cantleave:
Your step daughter's reaction is extreme and is unlikely to be due entirely to her belief system, although an underlying, existing problem may have been exacerbated by the fears instilled by the Watchtower's teachings. Is she getting high quality professional care? She needs it.
I hope you don't mind me saying that, but I think Elderelite and Cantleave where making an important clarification. Although I realize your words stem from your desire to make newbies feel welcome (you also took sides with me on one of my first posts).
By the way, I loved the way you defended Jdub4life?, another new poster, a couple of days ago. Your protective words reassured her immediately.
You know I like you a lot. Love, OLGA.

Dear Today, I'm sorry you are suffering in this "uneven yoke". As a former hard core Witness married to an extraordinarily loving non-Witness husband for 23 years, I strongly advise you to NEVER speak against the organization or the Witnesses. You don't stand a chance. The only reason why I "put up" with my husband not having become a Witness after taking a study for 7 YEARS!!! (out of sheer love) was his inconditional love for me, his total capitulation to let me raise my kids as Witnesses and his never having interfered with any of my deep-held beliefs. Utterly unfair, I know, but nothing my husband had said would have made me understand: the change had to come from within myself. I can only begin to imagine his relief this last year...!!!
Welcome to the board and all the best to you! You'll get to know us and how different and funny we are little by little...

I feel great, Lozhasleft. Exactly a year has passed since my decision, and all I can say is that it's been one of the best years of my life (quite a feat, since I was also extremely happy during my 45 years in the organization). But this freedom of mind I never experienced before is just so exhilarating... I'll be looking forward to more of your posts. .

For quoting in a box, highlight the text, click the "Styles" drop down (Top row of the tool bar, left of "Paragraph") and select "Quote"
I did it too, for the first time! Thank you, TD and Incognito!
