What an interesting link, Leavingwt! I'm printing it out so I can take my time reading it without my eyes itching. I too wish he had given details about what shook his faith to that degree. Thanks a lot for sharing it with us.

"Autobiography of a Died-Again Christian"
by leavingwt ini enjoyed a number of the points in this essay.
dr. jaco gericke's deconversion story: "autobiography of a 'died-again' christian<snippets>.
it was a little late in the day, however, when i realised that studying theology can be a downright dangerous business for any believer.

The Story of SD-7 - Chapter 2
by sd-7 ingiven that i'm very sensitive emotionally, i tend to avoid mentioning my personal life here if possible, preferring to stick to evaluation of watchtower publications and doctrine, particularly the newest material i can get my hands on.
but i felt it was time to talk again.
i hope at least some of you will be gentle.. i'm married now.

Dear sd-7,
My heart broke when I read your post. None of us have the right to judge you. Your options were clear: 1. Freedom without her. 2. Her without freedom. Either option was tough, neither being preferable to the other and both requiring lots of inner strength. You had to choose one and chose the second. I don't see why you should feel uneasy about it. Now that you've made your decision, don't look back. As you yourself say:
"At the very least, some good is and can still be accomplished inside this religion".
I fully agree. Concentrate on the good you can do from inside the organisation and enjoy her love to the full: she is your reward.
Be happy, sd-7. You are in no way less that any of us here. We are all heroes in our own way.
Hugs, Goldensky.

Thank you, Sylvia. You've reassured me. I doubted whether writing this last post in case I offended you, among other posters. I'm glad I didn't. A big hug to you, Goldensky.

Dear all:
I must be honest to myself and most grudgingly admit that as much as I would have liked to be "convinced" by those of you on this thread who believe, not in the power or prayer, which I don't doubt, but in the power of prayer due to a loving almighty Father who cares for each one of us, the arguments exposed here by those of you who don't believe in it have really resonated with me, I find them OH HOW UTTERLY AND PAINFULLY IRREFUTABLE... whereas unfortunately I haven't found any evidence except a keen desire to believe backing up the comments of those of you who have faith...

Caliber, I've just read the link you suggested. After explaining, among other examples, how even seeds sprouted faster thanks to prayer, the conclusion is this:
"These studies have shown conclusive evidence of the power of prayer. Time after time the outcomes of these tests have shown the reality of the force of a higher being and our ability to communicate with Him".
Sure, God answers prayers for plants to bloom, whereas millions of people earth wide don't receive anything no matter how loud or often they pray... Come on!
To me, the only logical conclusion after reading the article is that we do transmit our positive energy to the objects of our prayer, and that can have an influence on how they feel. That's all.

I fully agree with you, Caedes. Prayer is OK as long as you don't fail to do your utmost to solve the problem yourself to the extent you reasonably can, like the pilot should obviously have done.
Actually, I forgot to add to my first post that as I was falling asleep yesterday I heard a voice inside me (my own, of course) saying: "Olga, you are probably as irrational as the lady you visited today, but don't let that worry you. Keep on praying as long as it gives you a measure of pleasure and comfort. After all, you are not hurting anybody..." ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ (I don't know if it means the same in English, what I mean is that I next fell peacefully asleep)...

I really enjoyed the video, Whereami. And each one of your comments on it, guys.
Yesterday I visited a very Catholic lady whose 28 year-old-son is dying of cancer (I used to be his English tutor when he was 7 or 8. How sad...). This lady has been praying to the virgin Mary ever since the cancer was discovered (a couple of years ago, but now the young man is really living his last months), fully convinced Mary may "change her Son's (Christ's) plans for Javier (the lady's son) and heal him, just as she was able to convince him to perform the miracle of transforming water into wine before it was Christ's due time to become publicly known". (I couldn't believe my ears). She prays day and night. I couldn't help wondering how this highly educated upper-class intelligent Spanish lady can believe: 1. That Jesus could have such a horrible "plan" for her son. 2. That the virgin Mary may try to convince her Son not to take Javier away so soon by curing him. 2. That her prayers in particular are going to be heard above the thousands of other prayers by other mothers whose children are also dying...
But then, I pray myself to sleep every night too, even though all evidence is telling me He is not listening to me or to any human for that matter. Yet, it makes me feel good. And silly at the same time... I wonder whether I will end up not praying at all, but for the moment it feels so good... ????????

An Apology ..... (of sorts)
by AllTimeJeff inopinions are like certain orifices, everyone has one.. it's only if you insist that yours is the only one in the room that counts that you become like certain orifices....... with that in mind, i wish to offer a small but sincere apology to all members of our unique little community on jwn.
(that even includes perry).
now mind you, i don't apologize for the views i have, esp my political ones.

AllTimeJeff, I found your apology totally humble and sincere, and I respect you even more for having posted it.
I have no idea why some posters are reading between the lines looking for a meaning you never intended to convey.
Hugs.
