  Elder uses Congregation Bible Study as an opportunity to ban the movie Avatar

  last night, during the congregation bible study, the conductor (overseer?

  ) used this as a platform to say that the movie avatar is of satan and no christians should see it.. .

  he said that he googled the (original) meaning of the word avatar and it was of hindu religious origin.

  Hmm. So the origin of the word Avatar makes the movie demonic. Of course, not even the WTS would say anything to that effect, would they? They would encourage a more moderate view, like the one found in the September 22, 2003 Awake! regarding Pinatas.

  "A main concern is, not what the practice meant hundreds of years ago, but how it is viewed today in your area. Understandably, opinions may vary from one place to another. Hence, it is wise to avoid turning such matters into big issues."

  Taking time from the CBS to spread a personal agenda seems to be "turning such matters into big issues".

  - a married ex from a few years ago who has a kid now too, who after being with you got married within a few months, seems to decide they may have made a mistake, and want to meet you for a weekend but supposedly not to do anything wrong just for closure.

  i've been lurking this board the past few days and reading a lot.. i'm a 30 year old male from an unnamed european country, i was brought up "in the faith" by my jw-parents (my father is an elder and was even the "head elder" (i guess that's not the proper english term, english isn't my mother language) for a while, although i believe he stepped down when i faded away, but was reinstated as an elder later.

  i never really had any interest in religion or god, not even as a child, even with my perfect jw upbringing.

  it always felt like a chore and i did my jw duties, but just the bare minimum i could get away with, living at home with jw parents (attending the 3 meetings every week, and going to do field work 1 hours on saturdays).. at around age 15-16 i got baptized, i was not directly pressured to do it but some hints were made by parents/elders.

  in my lifetime of knowing jehovah's witnesses, i recognized very few as being extremely intelligent.

  most seemed to just go along with the program.. i noticed we have a number of "very intelligent" exjws here..

  i used to hear it all of the time!

  i was 24 when i was first appointed as an elder.

  certain ones who were disillusioned with the "old guard" were really hoping i'd come on board and change the way the body of elders did things.

  Yes. I have seen some nice young guys become part of the machine. It's so sad to watch that last little glimmer of humanity in their eyes slowly fade away.

  I'm personally not close to Florida. If some long-distance advice would be helpful, feel free to PM me with any specifics. Perhaps a thread could be started specifically asking about A/E/C professionals in the area? I'm willing to bet a few would turn up.
