Question about needy dogs ...

dear friends of man's best friend,.

i am trying to understand the behavior of my neighbor's pooch.

she's truly a love, but .... she's part german shepherd (and looks it) and part blue heeler (issue of the dingo [?]).

A good vet that specializes in behavior is a start. Also obedience school. Your dog has you very well trained!! What a smart dog!!! Actually I mean that. German Shepherds are incredibly intelligent. Sometimes they need jobs. Study up on both the breeds in your dog and you'll understand them better. Sounds like your dog has quite a drive. It could be channeled in ways such as agility, search and rescue and obedience competition.

Don't give up!!!! And there are good drugs out there but that's the last resort. Dawg is right. Don't give her what she wants and eventually she'll realize that the yipping is not getting her what she wants.

Crate training is also a good thing. But not as punishment. More as a cool down place.

Some use shock collars. I've never used them. I'm not sure what I think about them. But people that I know that have used them (with restraint) have had good results. There are lot of different opinions on them so I'm just putting that out there. I'm not advocating them.

Oh there's a lot I can't do. And there are times that it's wise for me not to try to lift something(to conserve my joints not cause I'm a girl). And everytime I go to buy water softener salt(the 40-80lb bags) I get some kid asking me if he can carry it out. I'm like, Uh you wanna come home with me and carry it into the basement and dump it in the system too?

But I can use a drill. I can use a screwdriver. I can even check my own oil. AND by jiminy when it comes to a hardware store I WANT TO TALK TO A GUY!!!!!!!!! Does that make me sexist? giggle

I also don't come apart at the seams if I break a fingernail! HA!

I know my limitations and I know my strengths!!

And it's wonderful to hear a guy say he appreciates a strong woman!

sorry off topic.....(the elders HATED my attitude !!! I was a paramedic at the time I was still in the JW's..NOT ladylike or what a sister should be doing)

I'm an uppity woman!!!! Yes I am!!! And proud of it!!!!!

I remember some elder asking me why a single sister would want to buy house. I retorted "why would I want to marry to have one!?". This is the same elder whose wife dumped him. I use to hide behind my dad cause he just reeked of that "I must marry cause I'm burning" thing. EUWWWW!

Not only did I buy my house, I bought another one. I do maintenance on my own lawn mower(can you imagine?) I work in a male dominated field!!! I ride a motorcycle!!

No offense to the guys. I'm not a man hater...I can be a girly girl........I just couldn't stand the elders sexist attitudes on what a woman was supposed to do!!!!!!!!

Must be why none of them(except for the reeking one) wanted to marry me! Too independent!!!!

you know how there are somethings that give you so much pleasure or joy?

it doesn't have to be anything amazing or huge, but for some reason it makes you so happy for those few moments.

some of mine are drinking coffee in the morning with my best friend at work, and the smell of an open fire (it reminds me of being a young child at my grandparents' house).

and Simbas and Nemos and Dorys and Flippers and Benjis and Rajas and all the rest!!!

And you know something....... it seems that a God that created all this beauty and infinite variety of plants, animals, stars etc would not focus on ONE group of people.........I take comfort in that...

I will try to save spiders in my house.....LOL....I know that's crazy but I just can't bear to kill even insects without a reason. I won't use any pesticides in my yard unless my house is in danger. Of course I have to maintain that.

And I'd be goofy with delight if I could have turtledove babies in my hanging baskets! Summer, that has to be up there with sliced bread!

And Casper, when I was a kid my dad and I were in a local business that was all glass. A hummingbird had gotten in and banged against the window until his energy gave out. I was able (at 10 yrs of age) to gently pick it up and put it in a brown bag. We took him outside and let him go. He flew up into a tree stopped on a branch and looked back at us. I like to think he was saying thanks.

When I have stale crackers or old fruit I put it on the porch to feed the racoons, possums and whatever else. And I feed the outdoor kitties that might wander through. Yep I'm goofy!!!!!

I take a lot of flack from people at work for being like this. But I don't care. Their lives are just not as nice if they aren't looking around at the critters, flowers, trees, stars etc.

I try.....

I'm involved in animal rescue groups. I've actually got to pet a Mountain Lion at one of the rescues that I volunteer at. I about ran in circles and widdled on myself I was so excited.

Snakes, toads, frogs..I love them all!

I even rescued a box turtle off the road a few days ago!!

I have tons of Bee Balm by my gate in my backyard. 2 days ago I was on my way out and saw of female Ruby Throated Hummingbird. I stood like a statue for over 5 mins. She buzzed all around the flowers getting each one. She came within in an arm's length of me. What a thrill!!!!!

I'm a real nature girl so just about anything non-human thrills me.

I have loads of itty bitty baby toads in my yard. It takes forever to mow because I have to look for them, stop and carry them to another part of the yard. They are just so CUTE!!!

Ever wonder how seemingly smart people can be duped?

does anyone ever wonder how their seemingly intelligent family members can be so totally taken in by this religion?

i look at my parents and just wonder how in the world do you fall for this jw crap?

neither of my parents are college educated but by no means are they stupid and have good judgement and sense when it comes to a lot of things, but not this religion.

I've often wondered the same thing about my parents. They are incredibly intelligent. But yet the JW's have total hold on them.

I think "that religion" fulfills needs in some people. They're promised an utopia. "Just a little while longer" and they'll be no problems. Life will be great. You won't have to struggle with anything. BUT you have to EARN it. Which is not scriptual. You can't EARN salvation. But yet that seems to appeal to a lot of people especially the older ones that had to work hard for what they have now. My parents are depression kids. They were dirt poor. They've worked for everything they have now. So in a way "that religion" makes sense to them. They are working hard to be in the "New Order" or whatever it's referred to now.

To those of us that research, and question it's hard to understand what makes them so zealous. About a year ago I had one of the elders ask me if I thought they were brainwashed. I told him that I do believe that. He didn't say another word AND he didn't say anything to my father. That made me go HMMMMMMM. It also just knots me up to think my parents may be in a cult. BUT they find peace in their beliefs. I'm okay with that.

Of course Fern was NOT calling her parents stupid. She's as puzzled as I am about "that religion".

And that's exactly it...I was a "born-in" so I never had a tree, b-day cake or anything until I was well into my 30's. Sad isn't it? And just what are they proving?
