Unloaded on the husband of my wife's study sister last night, how much damage did I do to myself??

well had a really good weekend away from home, but i guess i knew that the respite from the wts would end.

tuesdays are the day my wife has her personal bible study with the sister and she has also had the husband come over on tuesday afternoons so the son can have the pleasure of a bible study (which he loathes, he is a high school junior and has no interest in this stuff).

i get home from work late, after a fairly long day and the guy is still there.

Selection of the JWs in 1918/1919 - how might a JW attempt to show from the Bible

i had asked my wife, who is in the study phase with a jw sister about the selection of the jws by jc in 1918/1919 time frame and she had actually never heard of that.. the husband of this woman she is studying with has been chomping at the bit to talk to me...well my wife said she will ask him to come show me, using only the bible, how this selection was made...of course she did not clear this request with the dubman before telling me she would do this.. i am guessing he will be there when i get home from work tomorrow, she is also torturing our son with a bs now (her son from a previous marriage).. what sort of reach do you think he will try to make to show this...i am guessing he will try to show 1914 from the daniel/revelation stuff, if he does this i am going to ask him to show 607bce from a non jw source....since i believe it is 586/587 bce as a starting date......i hope to keep him on the 1918/1919 topic, and have some examples of their beliefs from that era to talk about as well.

It's a fallacy to judge a faith on it's origins rather than what it is now!

I also think looking at prophecy interpretation is also a misdirection, while people where in expectation of Jesus as a messiah around when he came it was only afterwards we get the understanding of how clearly he fulfilled certain biblical prophecies ( prophecy fulfilment is only 100% after the fact)and even then they needed to be explained as with messiah coming from egypt a particular that one wasn't even seen as a prophecy till afterwards.

Intepretation of bible prophecy will be fluid and subject to change, It's impossible to judge any faith on it.

Most christian religions I know take the easy road of just avoiding bible prophecy altogether and not preparing people for armageddon but that would be even worse a failing IMO.

We were given bible prophecy to prepare us we shouldn't bury it as the man who got the shekel did. If we have gotten it wrong, prayer to God and time will refine it.

New World Translation, is it the best bible translation?

You demonstarte quite ably how people make judgement theologically rather than with translation. YHWH is the word used in the hebrew scriptures it was men that changed it to 'Lord' not God, God inspired the hebrew scriptures to have YHWH written 7000 times why would he do that only to remove it later? Did he change his mind? is this proof that God isn't omniscient?

In some countries a religion is not considered holy unless you have a few animals slaughtered on an alter to give it the real 'holy' feeling to the ceremonies.

I agree with sademo the reason for being in any religion is if you agree with them doctrinely their teachings. Just joining for social reasons or because the of the 'holy feel' to it's ceremonies, or it has a charassmatic leader like TV evangelists is for me being letting yourself fooled by the glitter and glitz of a religion.

I can enjoy the beautiful singing of a choir in a church ceremony but it just shows their skill and a good tune not holiness.

When a magician does a magic trick he creates a vivid atmosphere with loads of glittery wrapping that involves you deeply into the experience so your ready to take in what he does.

ceremony is just wrapping, a man praying alone in a bare desert can be extremely holy by who he is praying to and by his heart than all the pomp and ceremony put in for those involved.

that why for me it's all about the massage and we should believe what we join whether you are RC, mormon, scientologists or Jehovah's witness etc.

catholism is a uncrossable door for me doctrinally, but this topic shows me more than anything else how it is more about the ceremony and extra biblical issues rather than bible doctrine that attracts people to it.

I personally find NWT wordy but accurate. It lacks a lot of poetical flavour that older bibles have but it reads with a basic if rough honesty.

With any bible there will be areas that when a choice is available in translation, theology of the person translating or those it is aimed at, is taken into consideration.

grace/underserved kindness I personally prefer the NWT on this because grace is not an undestood word anymore outside of a dictionary to the average person.

I use many bible translations to compare scripture. In fact on the whole for debate purposes on these forums I use NIV translation so to show my point can be made from any bible. Occasionally you still get the odd christian who will use 1 john 5:7 in support of trinity acck.

Sometimes looking at the original greek or hebrew helps knowing the word has a richer deeper meaning than any translation can bring to it. I admire anyone who has taken time to understand the original languages.

i have seen so many arrows and spears thrown by jws, i want to know exactly what they are defending.. i want to see an explanation of "god" that is rational and can be understood.. doug.

hmmm you want philosophy off us? As a witness you won't get loads of extra biblical rhetoric from us you will get bible scripture.

Deut 6:4 is the start of our theology We believe there is only one God and he is Jehovah/YHWH he is Almighty, eternal, he cannot die he knows things that no one else can know and the holy spirit is his power his, energy.

Then their is Jesus his son born from God. he is God's firstborn of creation the bible states this clearly, he was created so could be the firstborn of creation he was died so he could be the firstborn of the dead.

Colossians 1:15-18 (New American Standard Bible)

15 He is the (A) image of the (B) invisible God, the (C) firstborn of all creation.

16 For (D) by Him all things were created, (E) both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether (F) thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- (G) all things have been created through Him and for Him.

but we also have provs 8 also describing the birth of the first.

this is a beautiful chapter on Jesus's pre-existence and his relationship with God.
