Yeah, it seems to me the religion would do so much better financially if it would stop discouraging higher education. Of course it would have to change in a lot of other areas too so that the more educated JWs would stay with the religion. It would appear that the Mormons would be the model to follow in this regard.
I think there really has been a struggle within- some pushing for higher education and giving to charity- and I think that was evidenced and reflected by the drama a couple years back that featured the Scolios character.
Just imagine- if the Governing Body got with the times and no longer required neckties. Or allowed the songs to be played with a drum backbeat. Or provided a "Sunday school" for the kids, to the relief of the parents who tire of trying to make toddlers act like little adults. Or loosened up on holidays and the blood issue (which it actually has- "fractions" for example).
The religion has to either mainstream and live or become more cultlike and destroy itself. Unfortunately the current GB is picking the latter. It's all they know.

I am SO happy for you, Aussie! This is HUGE! You must be on cloud nine. Let's hope this happens more and more for others as well.
(By the way I hope your avatar gets a good movie treatment soon. It's in the works. Hi Ho Silver Away!)

"It's up to You"- the one choice the Society never gives you
by JimmyPage inmy jw wife babysits from time to time, usually non-jws.
apparently my daughter was indoctrinated to the evils of halloween recently because one of the "worldly" kids mentioned it and she told him it was bad.
(although when i'm with her alone, she totally loves the holiday).. this non-dub kid said, "no it's not bad.

My JW wife babysits from time to time, usually non-JWs. Apparently my daughter was indoctrinated to the evils of Halloween recently because one of the "worldly" kids mentioned it and she told him it was bad. (Although when I'm with her alone, she totally loves the holiday).
This non-dub kid said, "No it's not bad. Is it, Jimmy?" My response: "That's up to you." His response: "Halloween is not bad".
I got to thinking about the response I gave, and I don't think I could have given a better answer, whether to the boy or to my own child.
It really is up to you, and it should be. My daughter often says things to me like, "Halloween is bad for Mommy" or "When is Mommy going to like Christmas?" (By the way, you should have seen the shocked look on my wife's face when I said "it's up to you". Like it was a totally new concept that sprang forth from a two-headed alien).
I think it speaks volumes that the simple act of forming your own opinion on matters is so violently opposed by an organization.
Anyway, I think it's time to reinforce the idea of free will in my kids and hope it sticks.

I enjoy playing piano though my style is admittedly very simple.
If I'm singing I'll play the chords with my right hand and the root note with the left hand, alternating between the two to keep the beat.
Or if I'm not singing I'll play the melody with my right hand and the chords with my left, usually something out of a "fake" book that tries to reduce the number of sharps and flats.
I find playing to be very relaxing.

Baba Yaga, you mentioned "The Devil's Backbone" by Guillermo del Toro. I like that one, but to me his "The Orphanage" is even more haunting. Have you seen it?
