No 'sola gratia', but self-merit leading to salvation?
most christian and other deist will us the free will argument to explain the existence of god and evil.
in this topic i would like to examine the flaws in this argument.. what is free will?
it's the capacity of rational agents to choose a course of action from among various alternatives (that's one definition).

There's only one moment in our life when we can show we have free will and that's when we explicitly acknowledge we have none.
in the new may awake magazine there is an article "is philanthropy the answer?
i knew what the answer.
was going to be before i even read it.
For one thing, neither money nor a good secular education caneliminate such problems as greed, hatred, prejudice and false religious beliefs.
Therein lies the great fallacy of religion, namely only a supernatural, non-human and unintelligible agency or state can solve all the problems, because humans are intrinsically perverted and unable to do good. It's obvious that such an attitude impedes philanthropy and is therefore morally reprehensible.
from a piece in a london publication:.
the proportion of men and women getting married is below any level found since figures were first kept nearly 150 years ago.. and the number of weddings held in 2006 was the smallest since 1895, when the population was little more than half its present level.. the evidence that marriage is withering away at an increasing pace was met with a furious response from critics of labour's benefits system, which disregards the status of husbands and wives and pays parents extra to stay single.
the causes of the collapse of marriage range from the rise in the western world of a highly individualistic ethic, to a profound shift in moral and religious attitudes, to the sexual revolution, to the widespread use of abortion and the pill, to changes in law, among other things.
I am sick of this place.
Out of here.
Burn
Some people are very confused indeed.

What a very ugly comment and accusation from a very confused woman.
Christian memes at work ... again.

In societies where marriage is obligatory for sexual intercourse, women suffer more from suppression than in societies where marriage and sexuality are personal decisions.

Marriage is morally wrong because it has pagan origins.
i found this one on the gene expression blog.
does religion confer evolutionary advantage?.
http://www.economist.com/science/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10875666.
You may like it or not, but because evolution has allowed for 7 million preaching witnesses, even the Watch Tower must have an evolutionary advantage. Maybe a member of the Governing Body had to be put into the scanner --- new scientific grounds to be developed.
for years, the catholic church was the focus of the vitriol of the watchtower society.
but it is amazing how much the organization has become like the catholic church in certain aspects.. in the bonham, texas trial the society's lawyers argued that the society was a "hierarchy.".
in the sexual abuse cases, they argued for "clergy privilege of confidentiality.".
Imo a very interesting evolution indeed. Some time ago I started a very modest thread on the link between the College of Cardinals and the Governing Body:
lovely lil started a thread that said it had external evidence of jesus' which i think proved rather useless and ultimately ended in debate about god's existence.
she said she wanted to start another thread about proof that god exists so i figured i would.
so this thread would be for actual proof of god.
lovelylil,
I'd like to say I appreciate your comment, but I wonder, do you also think these threads are a waste of time?
regards, hamilcarr.
